Intracranial manifestation of osteosarcoma.

Involvement of the central nervous system in osteosarcoma is uncommon. These neoplasms are most often located at the metaphyses of tubular bones and rarely in flat bones of vertebra, ribs, pelvis, facial bones, or skull. Tumors of the latter bones may obviously spread into the cerebrum. Osteosarcomas primarily metastasize hematogenously to the lungs. Bone, lymph node, or brain metastases are mostly seen following or concomitantly with pulmonary metastatic disease. However, there are single cases of primary osteosarcoma of the brain parenchyma without bone association or tumor manifestation at

MR imaging of paragangliomas.

MR imaging of 15 paragangliomas in 10 patients was compared with CT of 13 of the lesions in eight patients. All lesions were confirmed with angiography. All lesions were detected by MR and CT with the exception of one small glomus tympanicum tumor that was seen only in retrospect with MR. CT better demonstrated subtle osseous changes of the skull base and the relation of the tumor to the middle ear structures. MR better demonstrated the relation of the tumor to the adjacent internal jugular vein and carotid artery. The paragangliomas had a characteristic MR appearance based on their vascularit

Parapharyngeal branchial cleft cyst extending to the skull base: a lateral transzygomatic-transtemporal approach to the parapharyngeal space.

Second branchial cleft cysts (BCCs) can occur anywhere from the tonsillar fossa to the supraclavicular area. Second BCCs usually lie on the great vessels of the neck, deep in the sternocleoidomastoid muscle or along its anterior border at the mandibular angle. Parapharyngeal second BCCs are an uncommon neoplasm and rarely extend to the skull base. We report the case of a 45-year-old male with symptoms of conductive hearing loss. Temporal bone CT scan showed effusion in the left middle ear cavity. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a cystic mass that was located at the left parapharyngea

Rare Skeletal Complications in the Setting of Primary Hyperparathyroidism.

Parathyroid carcinoma represents an extremely rare neoplasm with diverse clinical manifestations which vary from asymptomatic patients to severe complications of hypercalcemia or parathyrotoxicosis while skeletal involvement is rather common. Herein we aimed at presenting a unique case of a young patient with rare aggressive skeletal complications of parathyroid cancer that initially were misdiagnosed. Ossification of the cervical ligamentum flavum and skull tumor illustrates erosive bonny lesions of hyperparathyroidism that in association with previous medical history of recurrent nephrolithi

Endoscopic endonasal approach in the management of skull base chordomas--clinical experience on a large series, technique, outcome, and pitfalls.

Skull base chordomas represent very interesting neoplasms, due to their rarity, biological behavior, and resistance to treatment. Their management is very challenging. Recently, the use of a natural corridor, through the nose and the sphenoid sinus, improved morbidity and mortality allowing also for excellent removal rates. Prospective analysis of 54 patients harboring a skull base chordoma that were managed by extended endonasal endoscopic approach (EEA). Among the 54 patients treated (during a 72 months period), 21 were women and 33 men, undergoing 58 procedures. Twenty-two cases (40%) were

[Giant scalp mass].

A 55-year-old man was referred to our department with bleeding from a painless tumor located at the left parietal region of the head which had been progressively growing for a period of 2 years. Physical examination showed a fist-sized pediculated mass overlying the left parietal region and the auricle. The partly livid and ulcerated surface of the tumor was interspersed with light-yellow chalky material. The mass was totally excised. Infiltration of the skull was not observed. Histopathological examination led to the diagnosis of a giant pilomatricoma. Pilomatricoma is a rare, benign skin neo

Smooth muscle tumour of uncertain malignant potential (SMTUMP) in the nasal cavity: an incidental finding.

Sino-nasal smooth muscle tumours of uncertain malignant potential (SMTUMP) are very rare neoplasms of mesenchymal origin with features in between a benign leiomyoma and a leiomyosarcoma. We report a rare case of SMTUMP in a 44-year-old woman, who presented with vague symptoms of pharyngitis. Nasal endoscopy revealed a smooth mass in left nasal cavity. Contrast-enhanced CT and MRI scans showed features likely to be inverted papilloma or olfactory neuroblastoma or meningioma. Excision was planned and intraoperatively, frozen section revealed a probable spindle cell lesion. Final histopathologica

Intraparotid Osteolipoma: Treatment Option and Surgical View.

Osteolipoma is a benign neoplasm originating from the mesenchymal fat tissue cells and characterized by the presence of bone formation. In the head and neck district osteolipoma has been described as parapharyngeal, nasopharinx, submandibular gland, eyelid, floor of the mouth, and skull base lesion. Only 1 case of osteolipoma was reported as a neoplasm of the parotid region. Considering the rarity of the osteolipoma, our purpose was to describe the first case of totally intraparotid gland localization of osteolipoma and summarize and review the actual literature concerning the presence of this

[Radiation risks from diagnostic radiology: meningiomas and other late effects after exposure of the skull].

A complete assessment of late effects of X-ray diagnostics should take into account that radiation sensitivity varies considerably for the different ages at exposure and, furthermore, that not only malignant diseases but also benign neoplasms are induced which also may lead to severe detriment of the patient. Risk estimates are derived for paediatric head CTs as well as for brain tumours in adults. Dose-effect relationships for tumours of the brain, skin, thyroid, and other sites of the head region, leukaemia, and cataracts are taken from the literature. On the basis of estimates for Germany a

Diagnostic and surgical aspects of central hemangioma of mandible: a surgical approach for the reconstruction of mandible.

Intraosseous vascular lesions are rare lesions, accounting for 0.5-1% of all intraosseous tumors. They were found to be affecting the second decade of life, more frequent in women. The frequency found affecting the vertebral column and skull; the mandible is a quite rare location. At present, according to the World Health Organization, these lesions are now considered as benign vasoformative neoplasms of endothelial origin. However, the origin of the central hemangioma is debatable. Some authors state it as a true neoplasm, few state it is a hamartoma. On examination, the patient may or may no

Risk estimates for meningiomas and other late effects after diagnostic X-ray exposure of the skull.

This study aims to investigate the contribution of diagnostic exposures to the rising rates of brain tumours and other neoplasms which are observed in several industrial nations. Included are benign tumours in the head and neck region and cataracts which are neglected in usual risk estimates by international and national radiation protection committees. Dose-effect relationships for tumours of the brain, skin, thyroid and other sites of the head region, leukaemia and cataracts are taken from the literature. Risk estimates are derived for paediatric head computed tomographies (CTs) as well as f

Evaluation of craniotomy in dogs and cats.

Over a reporting period of 5 years, craniotomy was performed in 26 dogs and 5 cats with various intracranial lesions. X-ray computed tomography was performed in all animals prior to surgery. Twenty dogs and all cats had intracranial neoplasms; of these, 14 were meningioma, and 11 represented a wide variety of brain tumors and skeletal tumors. Three dogs were treated surgically for traumatic, open-skull fractures with cerebral damage, and 3 underwent biopsy to evaluate chronic inflammatory brain disease. The overall medium survival time was 212 days, the 1-year survival rate was 39%, and the 2-

Twenty years of experience with lesions involving the temporomandibular joint and adjacent structures complex.

With their close anatomical relationship, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), mandibular ramus, skull base, ear, and infratemporal fossa make up a complex structure that may collectively be referred to as the 'TMJ and adjacent structures complex' (TASC). This study presents the neoplasms that may be encountered in the TASC region and their classification, which may be useful for the surgical treatment. Data of 1022 consecutive patients treated with resection of TASC neoplasms from May 2000 to October 2022 were reviewed. Pathology outcomes were classified according to the World Health Organizati

Facial Paralysis Secondary to Extensive Perineural Spread of Adenocarcinoma of the Parotid Gland Identified by PET/CT.

Brain MRI in an 82-year-old man with presumed Bell's palsy revealed a clinically unsuspected right parotid gland mass but no other acute findings. Biopsy revealed poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. Staging F-FDG PET/CT revealed an FDG-avid parotid mass, abnormal FDG uptake along the course of the facial nerve from mass to skull base, and multiple FDG-avid right level II neck lymph nodes and hepatic metastases. The PET/CT findings and prolonged clinical course suggest that diffuse perineural spread of tumor from a smoldering parotid neoplasm, and not idiopathic Bell's palsy, was responsible

[Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour of the infra-orbital nerve].

A malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour (MPNST) is an uncommon neoplasm that rarely involves the head and neck region. It is even more infrequent for these tumours to affect cranial nerves. We report the case of a 53-year-old man who presented a MPNST involving the infra-orbital nerve, which extended through the orbit and the base of the skull, progressing intracranially. Histological studies identified the tumour as an MPNST. Response to radiotherapy was not complete and radical surgical resection was impossible, so the patient died 10months later. This rare case of MPNST with intracranial

[The giant fungal body in the sphenoidal sinus and the destruction of the skull base].

The objective of the present study was to estimate the efficacy of the optical systems with the variable visual field angle applied for the endoscopic interventions on the paranasal sinuses. The authors report a clinical observation of the patient presenting with the giant fungal body in the sphenoidal sinus responsible for the partial destruction of the bone canal of the optic nerve and the internal carotid artery. The patient was treated by endoscopic shenoidotomy through the paraseptal approach with the use of a sinuscope with the variable visual field angle. It was shown that the use of op

Hemangiopericytoma of the skull base and Collet-Sicard syndrome: a case report.

Hemangiopericytoma (HP) is a mesenchymal tumor that originates from the pericytes of the capillary walls. This is a rare neoplasm, particularly in the head and neck; the skull base is involved exceptionally. We report a case of a large HP located in the jugular foramen. The last four cranial nerves were involved, causing a Collet-Sicard syndrome associated with facial palsy. Only one case of HP and Collet-Sicard syndrome is reported in the literature. The clinical course of the disease is described, emphasizing the long period of elapsed time between onset of the complaints and the final diagn

Case report: chronic graphite granulomatous abscess simulating a brain tumor.

Brain abscess can develop at the site of retained intracranial foreign bodies many years after the injury. This report describes a 6 1/2-year-old child who presented with recurrent severe headaches and a focal seizure of the right upper extremity. Skull X-ray was normal. Computed tomography of the head showed a mass in the left temporoparietal region with a central area of high density and contrast enhancement, thought to be a neoplasm. The mass was seen on the radionuclide brain scan and was avascular on angiography. Craniotomy revealed a foreign body granuloma with a small abscess cavity and

Intradiploic Epidermoid Cyst Of The Skull.

Intradiploic epidermoid cyst is an uncommon, benign, slow growing neoplasm that occurs between two tables of cranial bones and constitute 0.4% of all cranial epidermoid. It usually occurs due to the entrapped ectodermal embyronal remnants within the skull bones or rarely secondary to trauma. Pre-operative diagnosis on the basis of radiologic investigations is difficult. Complete surgically excision is usually required in order to prevent complications like super infection, intracranial rupture with pneumocephalus and rarely malignant degeneration. Olfactory ganglioneuroblastoma in a dog: case report and literature review.

A 7-y-old, intact male Alaskan Malamute was presented with a 3-mo history of stertor and epistaxis. Computed tomography of the skull revealed generalized loss of gas throughout both nasal passages with replacement by a soft tissue mass that traversed the cribriform plate. Histopathology revealed neoplastic neuroblast cells arranged in anastomosing cords, as well as separately located aggregates of ganglion cells. Both neoplastic cell populations demonstrated immunoreactivity to MAP-2, TuJ-1, and synaptophysin. Neuroblastic cells additionally exhibited punctate immunoreactivity to MCK and CK8/1
