Disposable Smart Sensor Embedded with Reduced Graphene Quantum Dots for Multimodal Detection of Epinephrine.

The reduced graphene oxide quantum dots developed using a biobased reducing agent from pristine graphene oxide exhibit a broad-spectrum fluorescence emission, attributed to the incorporation of multiple active functional moieties derived from the bioextract of Lawsonia inermis. These surface functional groups serve as key binding sites for selective analyte interaction. In this work, we have synthesized bioreduced graphene quantum dots for the sensing of the epinephrine hormone, which is important for regulating respiratory function, physiological stress response function, and blood redistribu

Real-time PCR assay to detect smallpox virus.

We developed a highly sensitive and specific assay for the rapid detection of smallpox virus DNA on both the Smart Cycler and LightCycler platforms. The assay is based on TaqMan chemistry with the orthopoxvirus hemagglutinin gene used as the target sequence. With genomic DNA purified from variola virus Bangladesh 1975, the limit of detection was estimated to be approximately 25 copies on both machines. The assay was evaluated in a blinded study with 322 coded samples that included genomic DNA from 48 different isolates of variola virus; 25 different strains and isolates of camelpox, cowpox, ec

Wearable Smart Fabric Based on Hybrid E-Fiber Sensor for Real-Time Finger Motion Detection.

Wearable electronic sensors have attracted considerable interest in hand motion monitoring because of their small size, flexibility, and biocompatibility. However, the range of motion and sensitivity of many sensors are inadequate for complex and precise finger motion capture. Here, organic and inorganic materials were incorporated to fabricate a hybrid electronic sensor and optimized and woven into fabric for hand motion detection. The sensor was made from flexible porous polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) filled with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The weight ratios of MWCNTs and geometric c

Expandable drug delivery system for gastric retention based on shape memory polymers: Development via 4D printing and extrusion.

Several diseases would benefit from prolonged drug release provided by systems retained in the stomach for extended time periods. Expandable gastroretentive devices are administered in a collapsed configuration enabling swallowing and regain in situ their native shape having larger spatial encumbrance, thus hindering voidance through the wide open pylorus. An expandable system for gastric retention was here proposed relying on the shape memory behavior of pharmaceutical-grade poly(vinyl alcohol). Different original configurations to be recovered upon exposure to aqueous fluids at 37 °C, potent

Highly Robust and Multimodal PVA/Aramid Nanofiber/MXene Organogel Sensors for Advanced Human-Machine Interfaces.

Flexible and wearable electronics require soft sensing materials that balance mechanical compliance, stable signal transduction, and durability for human-machine interfaces (HMIs). To address the limitations of single-filler systems, we propose a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/aramid nanofiber (ANF)/MXene organogel (PAM) as a multifunctional soft platform. This design integrates a PVA physically crosslinked network with ANF for mechanical reinforcement and MXene for electrical functionality. The optimized PAM composite exhibits outstanding mechanical properties, including a fracture stress of 2931

Nonequilibrium Interfacial Complexation Fibers With Programmable Ionic Memory.

Emulating learning and memory functions of biological systems in soft, textile-compatible materials remains challenging, particularly for artificial synapses that require both structural adaptability and reliable ionic dynamics. Existing artificial synaptic devices predominantly rely on membrane-based or multilayered architectures, which complicate fabrication and limit scalability. Here, we report multiscale interfacial polyelectrolyte complexation (IPC) fibers fabricated via a one-step interfacial process, enabling programmable fiber architectures with mechanical compliance and direct compat

A Superior Corrosion Protection of Mg Alloy via Smart Nontoxic Hybrid Inhibitor-Containing Coatings.

The increase of corrosion resistance of magnesium and its alloys by forming the smart self-healing hybrid coatings was achieved in this work in two steps. In the first step, using the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) treatment, a ceramic-like bioactive coating was synthesized on the surface of biodegradable MA8 magnesium alloy. During the second step, the formed porous PEO layer was impregnated with a corrosion inhibitor 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) and bioresorbable polymer polycaprolactone (PCL) in different variations to enhance the protective properties of the coating. The composition, ant

Defining the Properties of an Array of -NH2-Modified Substrates for the Induction of a Mature Osteoblast/Osteocyte Phenotype from a Primary Human Osteoblast Population Using Controlled Nanotopography and Surface Chemistry.

Accelerating the integration of a joint replacement or the healing of a bone fracture, particularly a complicated non-union fracture, would improve patient welfare and decrease healthcare costs. Currently, an autologous bone graft is the gold standard method for the treatment of complicated non-union fractures, but it is not always possible to harvest such a graft. A proactive highly inductive so-called smart material approach is pertinent in these cases. In this study, the surface chemistry of a previously approved material with desirable bulk material properties was modified to investigate i

An adhesive hydrogel enabling spatiotemporal delivery of umbilical cord exosomes for scarless skin regeneration through immunomodulation and ECM remodeling.

The regenerative repair of full-thickness skin defects remains a formidable clinical challenge, often culminating in pathological scarring because conventional dressings lack the functionality to balance robust adhesion with mechanical compliance and actively direct tissue regeneration. To address this, we propose an adhesive dual-network hydrogel (GelMA-PBA/HANB/HepMA) via the synergistic integration of dynamic boronic ester bonds and photo-triggered imine crosslinking, while serving as a smart depot for sustained delivery of umbilical cord-derived exosomes (uExos). This system orchestrates a
