Cigarette smoking in pregnancy.

1. One in three women still continue to smoke in pregnancy. 2. The government target of reducing the numbers of pregnant women who smoke by they year 2000 is at least a third. 3. Midwives are ideally placed to offer support to women who smoke in the antenatal period. 4. A multidisciplinary approach has been shown to be effective, backed up by leaflets, a helpline or contact number, and one to one counselling. 5. Midwives need appropriate skills and expertise to enable them to give effective smoking cessation advice.

Tobacco control policies on cancer prevention in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, 2025-2050: A modeling study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the implementation of control policies, smoking prevalence remains high in Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR), and the impact of tobacco control efforts on cancer prevention is unclear. We assessed the potential impact of key policy interventions on tobacco-related cancer incidence in EMR countries from 2025 to 2050. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a modeling study using a country-level historical data to project tobacco smoking prevalence in EMR countries under four scenarios: (i) full implementation of the MPOWER (Monitor, Protection, Offer, Warn, Enforce, and Raise)

A Scoping Review of Implementation Science in Planning and Delivering Tobacco Control Interventions in the United States from 2000 to 2020: Frameworks, Intervention Characteristics, and Health Equity Considerations.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence-based interventions to reduce tobacco-related morbidity and mortality are not widely or effectively implemented, thereby failing to equitably address disparities in tobacco-related health outcomes. Implementation science (IS) has the potential to advance the impact of tobacco control programs, but its use in this field has not been previously explored. To identify opportunities for expanding tobacco intervention impact, this scoping review investigated the use of IS tools in tobacco control research in the United States. METHOD: Using Arksey and O'Malley's approach, sev

Susceptibility to tobacco use and associated factors among youth in five central and eastern European countries.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use among young people still remains a major public health problem. Thus, the aim of this study was to perform a cross-country comparison for the factors associated with susceptibility to tobacco use among youth from five central and eastern European countries. METHODS: The data used in the current analysis, focusing on youth (aged 11-17 years), who have never tried or experimented with cigarette smoking, was available from the recent Global Youth Tobacco Survey (Czech Republic (2016), n = 1997; Slovakia (2016), n = 1998; Slovenia (2017), n = 1765; Romania (2017), n = 3718

How long does it take to reduce tobacco-related disparities? Changing the paradigm and looking toward new solutions.

Tobacco use is related to persistent health disparities and is the leading preventable cause of death worldwide. The negative effects of tobacco on health have been a longstanding public health issue. Historically, the US response to the detrimental impact of smoking has been related to taxes and public bans. Although these interventions have reduced overall smoking rates, little has been done to reduce tobacco-related disparities, especially among racial and ethnic minority groups, low-income groups, and rural populations. As the immediate past president of the National Medical Association, I

Interpreting results, impacts and implications from WHO FCTC tobacco control investment cases in 21 low-income and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco control investment cases analyse the health and socioeconomic costs of tobacco use and the benefits that can be achieved from implementing measures outlined in the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC). They are intended to provide policy-makers and other stakeholders with country-level evidence that is relevant, useful and responsive to national priorities and policy context. METHODS: This paper synthesises findings from investment cases conducted in Armenia, Cabo Verde, Cambodia, Chad, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Eswatini, Georgia, Ghana, Jordan,

From the American Academy of Pediatrics: Policy statement--Tobacco use: a pediatric disease.

Tobacco use and secondhand tobacco-smoke (SHS) exposure are major national and international health concerns. Pediatricians and other clinicians who care for children are uniquely positioned to assist patients and families with tobacco-use prevention and treatment. Understanding the nature and extent of tobacco use and SHS exposure is an essential first step toward the goal of eliminating tobacco use and its consequences in the pediatric population. The next steps include counseling patients and family members to avoid SHS exposures or cease tobacco use; advocacy for policies that protect chil

The epidemiology of smoking: health consequences and benefits of cessation.

BACKGROUND: Curative hepatectomy is the treatment of choice for resectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). For recurrence or progression beyond locoregional therapy (LRT), multikinase inhibitors (MKIs) remain established first-line options. However, whether prior curative resection is associated with a survival benefit after MKI initiation remains unclear. We employed inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) and propensity score matching (PSM) to compare survival in MKI-treated patients with and without prior hepatectomy. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study enrolled 203 patients

Brief Advice on Smoking Reduction Versus Abrupt Quitting for Smoking Cessation in Chinese Smokers: A Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

AIMS: To compare the efficacy of brief advice about cut-down-to-quit (CDTQ) with that of brief advice about quit immediately (QI), as delivered by trained volunteers, without the use of pharmacological therapy, to outreach-recruited Chinese smokers in Hong Kong who intend to quit smoking. METHODS: Smokers (N = 1077) who enrolled in the Quit and Win Contest 2014 and intended to quit or reduce smoking were randomized in participation sessions to CDTQ (n = 559) and QI (n = 518) groups. Subjects in the CDTQ group received brief advice and a card about smoking reduction. Subjects in the QI group r

Smoke-Free School Policy and Exposure to Secondhand Smoke: A Quasi-Experimental Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco control prevention efforts are important to protect people from exposure to dangerous tobacco smoke, support cessation, and reduce tobacco-use initiation. While smoke-free laws have been a widespread tobacco control strategy, little work has been done to examine the impact of smoke-free school policies. The objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of provincial smoke-free school ground policies on youth-reported exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) on school property. METHODS: This study used a nationally representative sample of 20 388 youth aged 15-18 from the 2

Tobacco endgame goals and measures in Europe: current status and future directions.

The European Union (EU) aims for a tobacco use prevalence of less than 5% by 2040 with its Tobacco-Free Generation goal, aligning with the tobacco endgame approach. In the Joint Action on Tobacco Control 2 (JATC-2) -project, we examined adopted and planned endgame goals and measures as well as preparedness to counter tobacco industry interference in the process. We surveyed key informants in 24 out of 50 countries in the WHO European Region (19 of the 27 EU Member States, MS). Altogether, eight countries (7 EU MS) had official governmental endgame goals, and an additional six EU MS had similar

Implementing Pictorial Health Warning Labels on Waterpipe Tobacco Products in Lebanon: A Policy Framework Analysis of Content, Actors, Context, and Process.

INTRODUCTION: Lebanon has one of the world's highest waterpipe (WP) consumption rates. Research has documented the effectiveness of implementing pictorial health warning labels (PHWLs) on WP products at encouraging smoking cessation and discouraging youth uptake of smoking. AIMS AND METHODS: This study aims to gain insight into key informants' (KIs) views on the issuance, implementation, and compliance of a decree for PHWLs on WP products. Thirteen KIs (policy makers, media, and international/local nongovernment organization representatives) were interviewed online and asked about potential b

Facebook usage, participation patterns, and social support from Facebook activity among smokers with mobility impairments.

People with mobility impairments (MIs; use assistive devices to ambulate) have twice the smoking prevalence versus the general population. A Facebook intervention could improve reach to smokers with MIs, but use and patterns of use are unknown. The study examined: (a) Facebook use and relationship with Facebook-based social support and (b) whether Facebook use differs by motivation to quit smoking. Participants (N = 510; 56.3% female, mean age = 42.4 years) were recruited via a recruitment company to complete a one-time online survey assessing motivation to quit within 30 days, Facebook use (F

Tobacco Control Policy in India: Progress and Challenges Quantified Using the Tobacco Control Scale.

INTRODUCTION: One of the most vexing challenges to public health today is the menace of tobacco. Despite the large body of evidence indicating the vast scale of health hazards, tobacco use continues to be a major cause of preventable death. This study was conducted with the objective of quantifying the progress and challenges of the tobacco control policy of India. METHODS: The Tobacco Control Scale (TCS) was used, which has a maximum score of 100 and assesses nine components including, price of cigarettes, smoke-free public and work places, spending on public information campaigns, comprehen

Cigarettes and cigarette smoking.

Tobacco use was widespread in the New World by the time of the first voyage of Columbus; however, it is only in the last century that the use of tobacco as cigarettes has been prevalent. The milder tobacco and more acidic smoke of cigarettes lead to the deeper inhalation of tobacco into the lung with resultant deposition and absorption of the addicting, toxic, and carcinogenic components of the smoke. More than 4000 individual constituents have been identified in cigarette smoke, and the relative concentrations of these constituents vary widely between brands of cigarettes. Tar yield, a measur

The impact of public smoking ban on the incidence of myocardial infarction hospitalizations.

Smoking is a well-established risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Exposure to tobacco smoke is associated with an estimated 35,000 cardiovascular deaths per year in nonsmokers. In addition, the risk of CVD decreases with the cessation of exposure to smoking. Association of smoking with CVD has been well known for years; however, association of secondhand smoke with CVD has been a topic of great interest, especially for the past 2 decades. Multiple studies and articles have evaluated the impact of smoking ban on the incidence of AMI-related hospit
