Incidence of fatal snake bite in Loni, Maharashtra: An autopsy based retrospective study (2004-2014).

Snake bite is a major public health problem specially in a rural region where agricultural work is the major source of employment. A retrospective study was undertaken of all cases of deaths due to snake bite autopsied at the Mortuary of Pravara Rural Hospital, Loni a rural area in Western Maharashtra over a period of 10 years from January 2004 to December 2014. Data of the study was gathered from autopsy reports and hospital records. The cases represented approximately 2.13% (54) of the total 2539 medico legal autopsies conducted during the study period. Most of the deaths (42.60%) occurred i

Ocular Manifestations of Venomous Snake Bite over a One-year Period in a Tertiary Care Hospital.

PURPOSE: Ocular manifestations in snake-bite injuries are quite rare. However, the unusual presentations, diagnosis and their management can pose challenges when they present to the ophthalmologist. Early detection of these treatable conditions can prevent visual loss in these patients who are systemically unstable and are unaware of their ocular condition. To address this, a study was conducted with the aim of identifying the various ocular manifestations of snake bite in a tertiary care center. METHODS: This is a one-year institute-based prospective study report of 12 snake bite victims adm

Acute interstitial nephritis in patients with viperine snake bite: single center experience of a rare presentation.

Acute renal failure following vasculotoxic viperine snake bites is very common in South Asia. Acute tubular necrosis and acute cortical necrosis are the common findings, with acute interstitial nephritis (AIN) being a rare presentation. We conducted renal biopsies in all patients who were admitted in our institute with viperine snake bite-related acute kidney injury (AKI) and who did not improve after three weeks of supportive care. Patients who had findings of AIN on renal histology were included for this study. Of a total of 42 patients, there were five patients (11.9%) with AIN. Our series …

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) type-1 following snake bite: a case report.

The pathophysiological mechanism and clinical course of complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) type-I still remain ill defined. Both the treatment and the prediction of the outcome of the treatment are difficult. Abnormal neurohumoral and inflammatory mechanisms have been implicated in its causation usually following trivial noxious event in an extremity. However, to the best of our knowledge CRPS type-1 following snakebite has not been reported yet in the literature. We here report a case of an aggressive CRPS type-1 following a mountain pit viper bite, locally known as Gurube (Ovophis montico

The five-ringed brown snake, Pseudonaja modesta (Gunther): report of a bite and comments on its venom.

The first case report of systemic evenomation by the five-ringed brown snake, Pseudonaja modesta, is presented. The patient had mild general symptoms of envenomation only, with no coagulopathy or evidence of paralysis. Data on P. modesta venom is presented, which shows an absence of a coagulant component in this venom. The venom gives a positive reaction to brown snake venom in the CSL Venom Detection Kit.

Human envenomation from the bite of the eastern garter snake, Thamnophis s. sirtalis (Serpentes: Colubridae).

A 13-yr-old victim of a prolonged eastern garter snake (Thamnophis s. sirtalis) bite was hospitalized following development of coolness, edema and ecchymosis of the bitten hand. Although lymphatic involvement was noted, vital signs and laboratory tests were normal and rapid recovery followed. Subsequent asymptomatic Thamnophis bites of the subject indicate that these clinical changes were not allergic. This case from Delaware suggests that widespread toxicity within the genus is likely.

Exploring the mechanism of cytisine in treating respiratory depression following venomous snake bites based on network pharmacology and molecular docking.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the antivenom mechanism of cytisine through network pharmacology and molecular docking (MD) techniques, with the intention of exploring its clinical applications. METHODS: The cytisine target and the snakebite respiratory inhibition target were obtained using the Swiss Target Prediction platform and the Gene Cards database. The two target sets were overlapped to form a protein interaction network. Additionally, pathway enrichment analysis was conducted on cross targets, and the related pathways for the treatment of snake venom-induced respiratory failure were obtaine

A Case Report of Postpartum Hemorrhage Secondary to Snake Bite Envenomation: A Pathogenesis and Current Management Review.

BACKGROUND: Snakebite envenomation (SBE) is a tropical disease with significant global morbidity and mortality, particularly affecting low-resource settings. During pregnancy, SBE poses unique challenges, increasing both maternal and fetal mortality. Limited access to antivenom and delayed treatment further worsen outcomes. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 36-year-old pregnant woman at 40.6 weeks gestation who presented to a rural Ecuadorian health center following a Bothrops snakebite to the right hand. Coagulopathy was detected and initially managed with antivenom. Because of feta

Factor assay in victims of snake bite: Experience from a tertiary care institute in South India.

INTRODUCTION: Snake bites tend to cause a high mortality in those who develop coagulopathy. However, there is very limited literature on clotting factor assays in these patients, especially in the presence of clinical bleeding. The aim was to assess the coagulation profile and individual coagulation factors in patients with hematotoxic snake bites. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective observational study of clotting factor levels in victims of snake bites with hematotoxicity admitted to a single hospital in south India for 12 months. In 43 individuals who fulfilled the criteria, we m…

Hypertrophic Scar With Contracture Over the Fourth Toe Secondary to Snake Bite Wound: To Salvage or Amputate?

Hypertrophic scar formation is a major clinical problem that results in both cosmetic issues and functional loss. The management of a hypertrophic scar varies according to the severity of the sequelae from the scar. We describe a method of treatment in a patient who had a history of multiple debridements due to snake bite resulting in severe contracture of the fourth toe complicated with a hypertrophic scar.

Bites by snakes of lesser medical importance in a cohort of snakebite patients from rural Sri Lanka.

Reporting of snakebite is poor in areas where they are most common. Comparatively, bites by snakes of high medical importance are likely to be documented than snakes of lesser medical importance. This study aims to describe the demographic, epidemiological and, clinical data of patients who were presented during a 49-month study period to a tertiary care center in rural Sri Lanka following authenticated bites by snakes of lesser medical importance. Of the total of 2362 confirmed snakebite patients during the study period, 517 (22%) presented with the offending snake specimen. Of them, 76 (15%)

Recovery from Copperhead Snake Envenomation: Role of Age, Sex, Bite Location, Severity, and Treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Few data exist to understand the recovery phase of pit viper envenomation. A recently published placebo-controlled clinical trial affords this opportunity. The purpose of this study is to examine the time course of recovery from copperhead snake (Agkistrodon contortrix) envenomation patients managed with and without the use of antivenom, stratified by age, sex, anatomic site of envenomation, initial severity of envenomation, and geographic region. METHODS: This is a post-hoc subgroup analysis of data from a multi-center double-blinded clinical trial of Fab antivenom (FabAV) vs.

Acute MI in a stented patient following snake bite-possibility of stent thrombosis - a case report.

Acute myocardial infarction following snake bite is rare with few reported cases in literature. A 60-year-old male underwent uneventful stenting to a critical stenosis in left anterior descending coronary artery in June 2012. A month later, he presented to the local hospital with history of snake bite. During admission he developed chest pain with ST-segment elevation in anterior leads consistent with stent thrombosis. He was successfully thrombolysed and his coronary angiogram 5 days later revealed patent stent with TIMI III flow and no evidence of thrombus.

Long-term renal outcome of snake bite and acute kidney injury: a single-center experience.

BACKGROUND: Snake bite can cause acute kidney injury (AKI) through multiple mechanisms. Many of these patients have severe kidney injury requiring renal replacement therapy. The long-term outcome of survivors of such severe AKI is not known. METHODS: We prospectively followed up 60 patients who developed dialysis-requiring severe AKI following snake bite and had survived the hospital stay. RESULTS: A total of 25 (41%) patients showed persistent renal involvement in the form of renal dysfunction, proteinuria, or hypertension at a mean period of follow-up of 45 months. Totally 5% of the patien
