Communication impairments in mice lacking Shank1: reduced levels of ultrasonic vocalizations and scent marking behavior.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder with a strong genetic component. Core symptoms are abnormal reciprocal social interactions, qualitative impairments in communication, and repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behavior with restricted interests. Candidate genes for autism include the SHANK gene family, as mutations in SHANK2 and SHANK3 have been detected in several autistic individuals. SHANK genes code for a family of scaffolding proteins located in the postsynaptic density of excitatory synapses. To test the hypothesis that a mutation in SHANK1 contributes to the symptoms of autism, w

Music Therapy for People With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review of Randomized Clinical Trials.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects social interaction, communication, and learning, with its prevalence continuing to rise, and music therapy (MT) has shown promise in improving social interactions and communication skills in individuals with ASD. This systematic review explores the relationship between ASD and music therapy, examining factors that influence its effectiveness in children. A systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published between 2009 and 2024 was conducted to assess the effects of music therapy on children with autism. Studies were retrieved from databas

Improving social participation of children with autism spectrum disorder: Pilot testing of an early animal-assisted intervention in Spain.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience moderate to profound challenges in relation to the skills required for social participation. Animal-assisted intervention (AAI) is increasingly used within early community care. However, the results of its early application in this population group are not known. This pilot study aimed to explore the feasibility of an early intervention based on the use of therapy dogs and to examine their impact on communication and social interaction skills. A within-subject quasi-experimental longitudinal design was used. The instruments for measuring

The comprehension of grammaticalized implicit meanings in SPCD and ASD children: A comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and social pragmatic communication disorder (SPCD) are two neurodevelopmental disorders with many similarities in affected individuals' impairments in social-communicative and pragmatic development. A central question pertaining to their differentiation concerns whether the distinction is truly qualitative or, instead, quantitative in nature, and indeed, defining the boundary between SPCD and ASD with IQ in the normal range often presents differential-diagnostic difficulties. While deficits in the comprehension of certain linguistically systematic imp

HD-tDCS effects on social impairment in autism spectrum disorder with sensory processing abnormalities: a randomized controlled trial.

This study examined the effects of high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) on social impairment in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), focusing on those with and without sensory processing abnormalities. A randomized double-blind sham-controlled trial involved 72 children with ASD, divided into three groups based on sensory integration status. A post-hoc analysis of 51 children aged 4-8 years who received true HD-tDCS was conducted, categorizing them into hypo-tactile, hyper-tactile, and typical tactile sensitivity groups. Therapeutic efficacy was compared a

Autistic spectrum disorders. 1: Presentation and assessment.

As many as six in every 1000 children may be affected by an autistic spectrum disorder. Characterised by a triad of social communication difficulties, these children exhibit impairment in communication and socialisation, and restricted and repetitive interests, movements and activities. This article will discuss the distinction between autism, Asperger's syndrome and pervasive developmental disorder. Assessment should include a history of the child's development, observation, school report and a profile of the child's strengths and weaknesses. However, it is important that potential differenti

Nucleus Accumbens Deep Brain Stimulation for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Aggression in an Autistic Patient: A Case Report and Hypothesis of the Role of Nucleus Accumbens in Autism and Comorbid Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder represents a set of developmental disorders characterized by lack of social interaction and verbal and nonverbal communication in the first 3 years of life. It is also associated with several comorbidities, including epilepsy, aggression, self-mutilating behavior, and obsessive-compulsive behavior. In some cases, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) develops. The nucleus accumbens (NAc) plays a key role in reward circuitry and is involved in the control of OCD and aggression. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 42-year-old woman with autism was offered NAc deep brain stimu

Association between peroxisomal biogenesis factor 7 and autism spectrum disorders in a Korean population.

Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in social communication, impaired reciprocal social interaction, and repetitive patterns of behaviors or interests. Although the cause of autism spectrum disorder remains elusive, the present study identified peroxisomal biogenesis factor 7 (PEX7) as a gene associated with autism spectrum disorder, and this association was examined in a Korean population. PEX7 encodes a cytosolic receptor for peroxisome targeting signal 2 of peroxisomal matrix enzymes that are targeted to and translocated into the peroxisome. P

Screening for autism spectrum disorders in 12-month-old high-risk siblings by parental report.

This study examines whether parental report of social-communicative and repetitive behaviors at 12 months can be helpful in identifying autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in younger siblings of children with ASD [high-risk (HR)-siblings]. Parents of HR-siblings and infants without a family history of ASD completed the First Year Inventory at 12 months. Developmental outcomes were based on 24- or 36-month assessments. HR-siblings later diagnosed with ASD showed greater impairments in social communication than those with other developmental outcomes based on parental and clinician ratings. Parental

Aiding resocialization of the chronic psychotic patient.

One difficulty of moving the focus of care for the mentally ill from hospital to the community is that some patients with severe mental illness, who have been in hospital for a long time, are difficult to place in the community. The main problems that appear to be barriers to community-based care are aggressiveness and adverse sexual behaviour. New antipsychotics, such as risperidone, are likely to increase the proportion of patients who can be successfully placed in the community because the low liability for extrapyramidal symptoms will contribute to better compliance. A crucial aspect of th

Self representation in children with and without Autism Spectrum Disorders.

In order to examine the roles of mental age, social interaction, and communication in self-representation abilities, typically-developing children were compared with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Typically-developing children (TD, n = 66) and children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD, n = 20), including subgroups of autistic disorder and pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified, were assessed on self-representation ability, which was measured by mirror recognition, other-directed pretend play, and use of personal pronouns. More TD children (100%) showed mirror rec

A Pivotal Response Treatment Package for Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: An RCT.

OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to conduct a randomized controlled trial to evaluate a pivotal response treatment package (PRT-P) consisting of parent training and clinician-delivered in-home intervention on the communication skills of children with autism spectrum disorder. METHODS: Forty-eight children with autism spectrum disorder and significant language delay between 2 and 5 years old were randomly assigned to PRT-P (n = 24) or the delayed treatment group (n = 24) for 24 weeks. The effect of treatment on child communication skills was assessed via behavioral coding of parent-child interactions,

Associations of continuum beliefs with personality disorder stigma: correlational and experimental evidence.

PURPOSE: A pervasive and deeply entrenched stigma of personality disorders exists. For other mental disorders, a large body of research suggests that continuum beliefs (i.e., the endorsement of continuum perspectives on mental health and psychopathology) stimulate more favorable attitudes toward affected persons. Additionally, mental disorder classification systems increasingly incorporate continuous personality disorder models. Yet, it is unclear how continuum beliefs are related to personality disorder stigma. This study evaluated the link of continuum beliefs with personality disorder stigm

A Social Ecological Approach to Understanding Posttraumatic Stress, Emotion Dysregulation, and Resilience Among Complex Trauma Survivors.

Complex trauma (CT), or chronic interpersonal trauma that begins early in life, has been associated with a multitude of negative outcomes, including posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and emotion dysregulation. Some CT survivors also exhibit adaptive functioning, such as resilience. Social and contextual factors may have an impact on the expression of adverse and adaptive outcomes for CT survivors, yet have been neglected. As such, the current study utilized a social ecological model to examine individual-level (i.e., age, sex, race, income, cumulative CT exposure), microsystem-level (i.e.,

Understanding mental health discourse on Reddit with transformers and explainability.

Social media is a powerful tool also for discussing mental health. The conversations that take place in these spaces provide a unique insight into how users talk about the issue. This study uses fine-tuned pretrained transformer models (BERT and MentalBERT), to classify Reddit posts about anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and borderline personality disorder (BPD) in specialised subreddits. By assessing how well subreddit conversations align with their intended mental health focus, the analysis ensures that these communities are effectively serving their purpose as support spaces. Association between anesthetics and autism spectrum disorder: from bench to bedside.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by core symptoms of impaired social communication and stereotyped behaviors. While early-life exposure to anesthetics may increase the risk of ASD, anesthetics can also have therapeutic effects on ASD, potentially through mechanisms involving the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic, and µ-opioid receptor signaling pathways. Given that individuals with ASD often exhibit high levels of non-cooperation and poor communication abilities, they typically require deeper sedation during m

Perception of facial expression and facial identity in subjects with social developmental disorders.

BACKGROUND: It has been hypothesized that the social dysfunction in social developmental disorders (SDDs), such as autism, Asperger disorder, and the socioemotional processing disorder, impairs the acquisition of normal face-processing skills. The authors investigated whether this purported perceptual deficit was generalized to both facial expression and facial identity or whether these different types of facial perception were dissociated in SDDs. METHODS: They studied 26 adults with a variety of SDD diagnoses, assessing their ability to discriminate famous from anonymous faces, their percep

Social communication and restricted, repetitive behavior as assessed with a diagnostic tool for autism (ADOS-2) in women with anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: In anorexia nervosa (AN), the traits of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are associated with poor outcomes. However, the subtle nature of these characteristics remains poorly understood. We investigated the in-depth patterns of ASD traits using Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Second Edition (ADOS-2) in women with AN. METHODS: Of 28 women with ICD-10 AN, 16 (age 19-30 years) participated in the ADOS-2, a video-recorded, semistructured diagnostic assessment for social communication and interaction and restricted, repetitive behaviors and interests related to ASD. None of the par
