Individual differences in boldness influence patterns of social interactions and the transmission of cuticular bacteria among group-mates.

Despite the importance of host attributes for the likelihood of associated microbial transmission, individual variation is seldom considered in studies of wildlife disease. Here, we test the influence of host phenotypes on social network structure and the likelihood of cuticular bacterial transmission from exposed individuals to susceptible group-mates using female social spiders (Stegodyphus dumicola). Based on the interactions of resting individuals of known behavioural types, we assessed whether individuals assorted according to their behavioural traits. We found that individuals preferenti

'Hooligans' abroad? Inter-group dynamics, social identity and participation in collective 'disorder' at the 1998 World Cup Finals.

During the 1998 Football World Cup Finals in France, English supporters were, once again, involved in major incidents of collective 'disorder'. Explanations for these incidents concentrated on the conflictual norms held by 'hooligans'. In contrast, Scottish supporters attending the tournament displayed norms of non-violence, explained by the popular press in terms of the absence of 'hooligans'. This study challenges this tendency to explain the presence or absence of 'disorder' in the context of football solely in terms of the presence or absence of 'hooligan' fans. Using data obtained from an

Differences in amyloid PET positivity based on ethnoracial group and social determinants of health: The new IDEAS study.

INTRODUCTION: This study leverages a large, diverse cohort to characterize ethnoracial differences in amyloid positron emission tomography (PET) positivity and identify social determinants of health (SDOHs) contributing to these differences. METHODS: We assessed differences in amyloid PET positivity by ethnoracial group (Black, Latinx, or all other races/ethnicities [AORE]) among Medicare beneficiaries with cognitive impairment. Secondary analyses associated various SDOHs with amyloid PET positivity. RESULTS: Among 5757 participants (21.7% Black, 20.3% Latinx, 58.1% AORE), we found lower odd

Online Group Counseling for Young People Through a Customized Social Networking Platform: Phase 2 of Kids Helpline Circles.

There is a growing need for high-quality evidence to support the efficacy of online counseling and peer support via social networking sites (SNSs) as an intervention to reduce mental health symptoms in young people. This article presents Phase 2 of Kids Helpline (KHL) Circles, which used mixed methods to assess the acceptability, safety, user experience, and mental health benefits of a purpose-built, counselor-facilitated SNS. Young people aged 13-25 years (n = 552) were recruited to participate in one of six 8-week "Circles." Of those, 154 participants completed study surveys at three timepoi

Cerebellar Neural Circuits Involving Executive Control Network Predict Response to Group Cognitive Behavior Therapy in Social Anxiety Disorder.

Some intrinsic connectivity networks including the default mode network (DMN) and executive control network (ECN) may underlie social anxiety disorder (SAD). Although the cerebellum has been implicated in the pathophysiology of SAD and several networks relevant to higher-order cognition, it remains unknown whether cerebellar areas involved in DMN and ECN exhibit altered resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) with cortical networks in SAD. Forty-six patients with SAD and 64 healthy controls (HC) were included and submitted to the baseline resting-state functional magnetic resonance imagin

Emotional and social mind training: a randomised controlled trial of a new group-based treatment for bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: There is a need to improve treatment for individuals with bulimic disorders. It was hypothesised that a focus in treatment on broader emotional and social/interpersonal issues underlying eating disorders would increase treatment efficacy. This study tested a novel treatment based on the above hypothesis, an Emotional and Social Mind Training Group (ESM), against a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Group (CBT) treatment. METHOD: 74 participants were randomised to either ESM or CBT Group treatment programmes. All participants were offered 13 group and 4 individual sessions. The primary o

Intensive group cognitive therapy and individual cognitive therapy for social phobia: sustained improvement at 5-year follow-up.

Little is known about the long-term outcome of treatments for social phobia. At 5 years post-treatment we contacted the 67 patients who had been treated with intensive group cognitive therapy (IGCT) or individual cognitive therapy (ICT) in a randomized controlled trial (Mörtberg, Clark, Sundin, & Åberg Wistedt, 2007) that originally compared IGCT, ICT, and treatment as usual (n=100 for the full trial). Seventy-two percent (48 patients) who received IGCT or ICT agreed to participate in the follow-up assessment. All re-completed the original self-report measures of symptoms and disability and a

Immunitary Life in COVID-19 Times: Understandings, Practices and Experiences Among Members of Marginalised Social Groups.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the concepts of human immunity and immune responsiveness have received new attention. This article reports findings from a project that interviewed members of four marginalised subgroups of the Australian population with experience of blood-borne viruses, other chronic health conditions and social stigma about how they understand their immunity and in what practices they have engaged to strengthen their immune responsiveness since the outbreak of COVID. In participants' accounts, there were echoes of long-held concepts about immunity as self-defence against inva

Social Determinants of Health and Linkage to HIV Care Among Groups at High Risk for Not Linking to HIV Care.

BACKGROUND: 1 in 5 people with new HIV diagnoses are not linked to medical care after diagnosis. Persons who are Black/African American, Hispanic/Latinx, young, and previously or currently use drugs via injection have low rates of linking to HIV care. We explored perceptions of patients living with HIV about how social determinants of health (SDoH) affect linkage to care. METHODS: We recruited patients from a large safety-net hospital in Boston belonging to one of the groups with high risk for low linkage to HIV care. We conducted semi-structured interviews in-person or via Zoom/telephone abo

The Role of Technology and Social Media Use in Human Papillomavirus Awareness: A Comparison Across Four Age Groups.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a significant public health crisis across various age groups. While technology and social media are crucial for disseminating health information, their potential remains underutilized due to varying levels of familiarity and comfort with digital platforms among different age groups. This study examines whether using technology and social media for health-related purposes predicts HPV awareness across different age demographics in the United States. METHOD: This cross-sectional study employed two datasets from the National Cancer Institute's Health Inf

Determination of different social groups' level of knowledge about malaria in a multicultural Amazonian cross-border context.

BACKGROUND: A steady decline in the number of cases of malaria was observed in the 2000s in French Guiana. This enabled regional health policies to shift their public health goal from control to elimination. To include inhabitants in this strategy, the main objective of this study was to describe knowledge about malaria, and related attitudes and practices in persons living in the French Guiana border. METHODS: We conducted a survey in people over 15 years old living in the twelve neighbourhoods of Saint-Georges de l'Oyapock with the highest malaria incidence. It comprised a 147-item question

Identifying groups of children's social mobility opportunity for public health applications using k-means clustering.

BACKGROUND: The Opportunity Atlas project is a pioneering effort to trace social mobility and adulthood socioeconomic outcomes back to childhood residence. Half of the variation in adulthood socioeconomic outcomes was explainable by neighborhood-level socioeconomic characteristics during childhood. Clustering census tracts by Opportunity Atlas characteristics would allow for further exploration of variance in social mobility. Our objectives here are to identify and describe spatial clustering trends within Opportunity Atlas outcomes. METHODS: We utilized a k-means clustering machine learning
