Social Determinants of Diabetes-Related Foot Ulcer Healing and Amputation in Australia: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: In Australia, approximately 50,000 people suffer from diabetes-related foot ulcers (DFU) with another 300,000 people at risk each year. Evidence suggests that social determinants of health may impact DFU outcomes; however, systematic evaluation of studies is lacking. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate studies investigating the impact of social determinants of health on DFU outcomes. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL and Scopus were searched from inception to December 2024. Original published studies conducted in Australia investigating the impact of social determin

Social Support and Mental Health in LGBTQ Adolescents: A review of the literature.

LGBTQ adolescents experience higher rates of mental health disorders than their heterosexual peers. The purpose of this systematic review of the literature was to examine studies evaluating social support and its effects on mental health in the LGBTQ adolescent population. Higher levels of social support were associated with positive self-esteem. Lack of social support (or low social support) was associated with higher levels of depression, anxiety, alcohol or drug misuse, risky sexual behaviors, shame, and low self-esteem. Interdisciplinary research teams from multiple and diverse professions

Recommendations to Advance Social Connectedness in End Stage Kidney Disease Care in a Post-COVID-19 Era.

Social connectedness, defined as a sense of belonging and inclusion among individuals and groups, is crucial for the well-being of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients. This Perspective employs a hypothetical case study to highlight the risks of social isolation and loneliness faced by ESKD patients. It offers guidance on how the ESKD community can effectively address these challenges. Although in-center hemodialysis provides an inherent environment for fostering social connections, the COVID-19 pandemic has intensified the risk of social disconnection. We delineate 5 key recommendations t

Social/communication skills, cognition, and vocational functioning in schizophrenia.

Deficits in social/communications skills have been documented in schizophrenia, but it is unclear how these deficits relate to cognitive deficits and to everyday functioning. In the current study, social/communication skills performance was measured in 29 schizophrenia patients with a history of good vocational functioning (GVF) and 26 with a history of poor vocational functioning (PVF) using a role-play-based social skills assessment, the Maryland Assessment of Social Competence (MASC). A battery of standard cognitive tasks was also administered. MASC-indexed social skills were significantly

Fighting social isolation of vulnerable people with dementia through remote group meetings: An experience report.

With the COVID-19 pandemic (WHO, 2020), social distancing became a crucial means to prevent further spread of the disease (Wendy et al, 2020). This raises concerns for dementia care (Wang et al, 2020), as social distancing leads to reduced cognitive stimulation, exercise, social networking and leisure activities (Brown et al, 2020). Active participation in art has shown positive impacts on the psychosocial wellbeing of stroke survivors (Morris et al, 2019). Additionally, engaging with humor potentially improves the memory, communication and self-esteem of people with dementia (PWD) (Stevens, 2

Beyond the Binary: Gender Inclusivity in Schizophrenia Research.

Schizophrenia is a severe neuropsychiatric disorder with significant differences in the incidence and symptomology between cisgender men and women. In recent years, considerably more attention has been on the inclusion of sex and gender in schizophrenia research. However, the majority of this research has failed to consider gender outside of the socially constructed binary of men and women. As a result, little is known about schizophrenia in transgender and gender-nonconforming populations. In this review, we present evidence showing that transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals have e

A hybrid in-person and online group singing program for older adults with breathing limitations: A pilot mixed-methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Group singing (GS) programs have emerged as a promising option to address both the respiratory and psychological needs of patients with breathing limitations. No study has documented a hybrid delivery mode that simultaneously combines in-person and online modalities. This study aims to explore participants' experiences and the effects on respiratory control, quality of life, and social inclusion of a hybrid GS program that includes in-person and online groups. METHODS: Using a mixed-method convergent design, we recruited twenty individuals with breathing limitations. The GS prog…

Gender Bias: Another Rising Curve to Flatten?

The COVID-19 pandemic and the upheaval it is causing may be leading to novel manifestations of the well-established mechanisms by which women have been marginalized in professional roles, robbing the field of the increased collective intelligence that exists when diverse perspectives are embraced. Unconscious bias, gendered expectations, and overt hostility minimize the contributions of women in academic medicine to the detriment of all. The current environment of heightened stress and new socially distant forms of communication may be exacerbating these well-recognized obstacles to women cont

Social Cognition in Adult ADHD: A Systematic Review.

The aim of this systematic review was to collect and align the research on social cognition impairments in adults with Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In particular, we selected and analyzed papers on emotion recognition and processing, Theory of Mind (TOM), empathy, and other facets of social cognition as decision making. We identified 16 papers published between 2012 and 2022 which meet inclusion criteria. Papers search, selection, and extraction followed the PRISMA guidelines. Indonesian teachers' epistemological beliefs and inclusive education.

A growing number of children with intellectual disabilities attend inclusive schools in Indonesia. Previous research has suggested that teachers' type of school and experience influences their beliefs about inclusive education. This research collected questionnaire data from 267 Indonesian teachers and compared the responses from those working in inclusive, special and regular schools regarding their epistemological and pedagogical beliefs. The results showed that teachers in inclusive schools expressed stronger social constructivist beliefs than those in other schools. However, it was teacher

Extracurricular activities and refugee students in Turkish educational settings: a systematic review.

UNLABELLED: Turkey hosts the world's largest refugee population, and extracurricular activities have increasingly been positioned as potential supports for refugee students' psycho-social adjustment, school belonging, and peer integration. However, a comprehensive synthesis of ECA-related outcomes for refugee students in Turkish educational settings remains absent from the literature. This systematic review examined the associations between extracurricular activity participation and refugee student outcomes across psychological, social, and educational settings-related domains. Following PRISM

The Impact of Exclusion from Close Versus Distant Relationships on Inhibitory Control: An ERP Study.

Previous research has not fully addressed the distinction between different sources of exclusion, focusing predominantly on how being excluded by strangers affects inhibitory control. To address this gap, this study employs a Go/Nogo task to examine how exclusion by individuals with varying degrees of social proximity (close vs. distant) affects inhibitory control. The results revealed that exclusion by both friends (p = 0.018) and strangers (p = 0.001) elicited significantly greater N270 amplitudes compared to inclusion by others. Conversely, the amplitude of the LPC was larger in the inclusi

An Ubuntu approach to disability and inclusive development for women with disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Vicious cycles of disability and poverty isolate disabled women, making it difficult for them to meet their own and their family's human needs. Their exclusion and deprivations may be bridged through inclusive development processes. The article presents an Afro-centric approach to inclusive development that speaks to experiences of disabled women who lived in informal settlements in the Cape Town metropole, South Africa that also has relevance for marginalised and oppressed communities in the Global North. OBJECTIVES: To describe how human scale development (HSD) as a conceptual f
