Decoding Preschool Social Dynamics: Automated Tracking of Spatial and Temporal Patterns to Investigate Social Interactions and Relationships in Peer Groups.

In this study, we applied machine learning tools to automatically track the positions of preschool children in a natural free play setting and derived spatial and temporal features from these data to identify social interactions between them. We observed a sample of 20 preschool children (10 female, 10 male; M ± SD = 3.95 ± 0.82 years) in groups of three children each. Friendship among children was assessed, and friend dyads were paired either with a mutual friend (n = 12 groups) or with a mutually disliked peer (n = 11 groups). We used a ceiling-mounted camera to record 10-min free play sessi

Social anxiety in online social interactions: Examining the effects of self and audience images on anxiety, self-awareness and performance evaluations.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined social anxiety symptoms during online social interactions. We examined self-report symptoms in individuals with elevated social anxiety in online interactions in the presence/absence of virtual audience images and the presence/absence of live videos of the self. METHOD: Participants with elevated social anxiety who were not treatment-seeking gave a short impromptu talk via an online social communication platform. Participants were randomised to present with their camera on or off, and to audience images that were visible or not. We recorded participants'

Factor structure of the Social Phobia Scale (SPS) and the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) in a clinical sample recruited from the community.

BACKGROUND: The Social Phobia Scale (SPS) and the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) are widely used self-report questionnaires to assess symptoms of social anxiety. While SPS measures social performance anxiety, SIAS measures social interaction anxiety. They are mostly reported simultaneously, but there have not been consistent results of the joint factor structure and therefore no consistent recommendations on how to use and evaluate the questionnaires. This study aimed (1) to evaluate the underlying joint factor structure of the SPS and SIAS and (2) to test whether SPS and SIAS are rel

Aberrant brain network and eye gaze patterns during natural social interaction predict multi-domain social-cognitive behaviors in girls with fragile X syndrome.

Girls with fragile X syndrome (FXS) often manifest significant symptoms of avoidance, anxiety, and arousal, particularly in the context of social interaction. However, little is currently known about the associations among neurobiological, biobehavioral such as eye gaze pattern, and social-cognitive dysfunction in real-world settings. In this study, we sought to characterize brain network properties and eye gaze patterns in girls with FXS during natural social interaction. Participants included 42 girls with FXS and 31 age- and verbal IQ-matched girls (control). Portable functional near-infrar

Bigger is better: Full-length versions of the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale and Social Phobia Scale outperform short forms at assessing treatment outcome.

The Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) and Social Phobia Scale (SPS) are 20-item companion measures of social anxiety symptoms frequently used to evaluate outcome in treatment trials. The SIAS-6, SPS-6, and Social Interaction Phobia Scale (SIPS) are promising short forms of the SIAS and SPS. The current study evaluated whether it is sound to use these short scales instead of the full-length instruments to measure outcome in social anxiety disorder (SAD) treatment studies, using data from a trial in which 255 adults with SAD were treated with traditional or imagery-enhanced group cognitive

[The concept of «multiple complex developmental disorder» - a disorder of social interaction, paranoid thinking and social anxiety in a 17-year-old boy].

OBJECTIVES: Multiple complex developmental disorder (MCDD) is a little-known disorder characterized by disturbances in the regulation of emotions, social interactions and thought disorders. Neither the classification system of ICD-10 nor the DSM-IV lists MCDD as an independent disorder. METHODS: The study presents an overview on diagnostic criteria, current research and illustration by a case report of a 17-year-old adolescent. RESULTS: MCDD, autistic disorders and schizophrenic disorders partially overlap. A clear classification or differentiation is currently not clearly possible. CONCLUS

The association between reaction time variability and social problems in children with ADHD: support for the role of attentional fluctuations in social interactions.

Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) typically experience social interaction problems. Neurocognitive functions, such as working memory and inhibitory control have been included in several studies of social problems in ADHD, with inconsistent findings emerging. Intraindividual reaction time variability (RTV) has been understudied as a factor explaining social problems in children with ADHD, despite being one of the most consistent cognitive impairments in the disorder. In the current study, we hypothesized that greater RTV would relate to greater parent-reported social

Social Interaction is Unnecessary for Hindgut Microbiome Transmission in Honey Bees: The Effect of Diet and Social Exposure on Tissue-Specific Microbiome Assembly.

Honey bees are a model for host-microbial interactions with experimental designs evolving towards conventionalized worker bees. Research on gut microbiome transmission and assembly has examined only a fraction of factors associated with the colony and hive environment. Here, we studied the effects of diet and social isolation on tissue-specific bacterial and fungal colonization of the midgut and two key hindgut regions. We found that both treatment factors significantly influenced early hindgut colonization explaining similar proportions of microbiome variation. In agreement with previous work

Beyond the game: social interaction as a bridge from sports to community cohesion and belonging.

Although community sports are widely promoted to enhance social integration, the mechanisms linking individual participation to collective cohesion remain theoretically underdeveloped. Grounded in Social Capital Theory and Social Interaction Theory, this study seeks to explain how social interactions serve as a conduit for converting sports engagement into community assets. To achieve this, a cross-sectional design was adopted, utilizing validated measurement instruments to survey participants in community sports activities. Structural Equation Modeling was subsequently employed to uncover key

Social interaction enhances the pleasurable urge to move to music in people with Parkinson's disease.

BackgroundMusic- and dance-based interventions can improve motor symptoms in people with Parkinson's disease (PD), but two key questions remain: whether the rhythmic complexity of music influences intervention outcomes, and whether social interaction further enhances these effects.ObjectivesTo examine the effects of rhythmic complexity and interpersonal synchronization on subjective and objective movement responses to music in PD.MethodParticipants tapped to the beat of music with varying levels of rhythmic complexity across three cueing conditions: music alone, music with a visual beat cue, a

Physical Activity, Rumination, and Social Interaction Anxiety in Adolescents: A Cross-Sectional Moderated Network Analysis.

(1) Background: Rumination is closely associated with adolescent social interaction anxiety, and physical activity has been linked to both repetitive negative thinking and anxiety-related symptoms. This study examined the network relationships between different dimensions of rumination and social interaction anxiety and explored the moderating role of physical activity level. (2) Methods: A total of 1194 adolescents aged 14-18 years (525 boys, 669 girls; M = 16.27, SD = 0.80) completed measures of rumination, social interaction anxiety, and physical activity. A moderated network model was esti

Characterising the social interaction style of autism in young adult males with fragile X syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The characterisation of autism in fragile X syndrome (FXS) has been a source of controversy due to the complexity of disentangling autism traits from common features of the FXS phenotype. Autism in FXS is significantly underdiagnosed in the community, which may be partly due to insufficient clinical description of the social interaction profile of autism within the FXS phenotype. In this study, we applied a classic framework for characterising social interaction styles in autism to a sample of young adult males with FXS and co-occurring autism to enhance understanding of how the so

Targeted prevention strategy: Exploring the interaction effect of environmental and social factors on infectious diseases.

Human disease and health issues are globally significant and closely related to environmental and social factors. However, the interaction effects of such factors on diseases are unclear, which has resulted in a lack of targeted prevention strategies. By taking infectious diseases in China as an example, this study uses an interpretable machine learning method to analyze the impact of environmental and social factors on disease, including industrial SO2 emissions, sanitary toilet coverage rate, and sunshine duration. The modeling results confirm the existence of a nonlinear relationship betwee

Multiunit Recording of Cerebellar Cortex in Autistic Male Rats during Social Interaction in Enriched Environments.

Autism in humans is a lifelong behavioral disorder that typically manifests in early infancy, primarily affecting boys. It arises from neurodevelopmental changes that significantly impact social behavior, with the cerebellum being one of the principal affected regions. In this study, we investigated the cerebellum in an autism animal model, recording the multiunit activity of cerebellar vermis lobules 6 and 7 (L6 and L7) in male rats with autism-like behavior induced by postnatal valproate treatment. Two groups were formed: control (Ctrl) and experimental (VPA) males, which were further divide

Self- and proxy-reported impaired social interaction in young adults with simple congenital heart defects.

BACKGROUND: Simple Congenital Heart Defects such as septal defects constitute a large proportion of Congenital Heart Defects. New research has demonstrated more co-morbidities than previously thought. In particular, co-morbidities involving neurocognitive, psychiatric, and social difficulties have been described. Neurocognitive and psychiatric morbidities affect social interaction. Social interaction is important in everyday social life (education, work life, family life). In this study, we investigated social interaction through self- and proxy-answered Social Responsiveness Scale 2 (SRS-2) i

Duloxetine ameliorates valproic acid-induced hyperactivity, anxiety-like behavior, and social interaction deficits in zebrafish.

Syndromic autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are characterized by impaired social communication and repetitive/stereotyped behaviors. Currently available therapeutic agents against ASD have limited efficacy. Thus, searching for novel and effective drugs ameliorating core symptoms, in particular social deficits, is of utmost importance. Duloxetine (DLX), an antidepressant that has been identified as an agonist mimetic for the cell adhesion molecule L1, exhibits beneficial functions in vitro and in vivo. Therefore, in this study, we focused on the rapid and persistent neuroprotective function of D
