Latent Profile Analysis of Stigma in Infertile Women and its Influencing Factors.

PURPOSE: Infertility, a global health challenge, often leads to stigma for affected women. This stigma brings negative impacts to infertile women, and is influenced by several factors. Research to date treats infertile women as a homogeneous group based on their stigma. We attempted to identify subgroups based on their stigma and explored variables associated with subgroups. METHODS: A cross-sectional study design was utilized, involving 439 infertile women. General information questionnaire, Infertility Stigma Scale, Perceived Social Support Scale, and the Chinese version of the Infertility

"It becomes more difficult when people don't empathize with us": COVID-19-related stigmatization experienced by survivors in Nepal.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread social disruption, with stigma emerging as a significant challenge for individuals who survived infection. This qualitative study explored the forms, drivers, and impacts of COVID-19-related stigma among survivors in Eastern Nepal. In-depth interviews were conducted with 15 COVID-19 survivors who had reported stigma in a preceding cross-sectional survey. Due to pandemic-related restrictions, interviews were conducted over the phone. Data were analysed thematically following the process outlined by Braun and Clarke. COVID-19 stigma was multifaceted, inclu

Young adult gay and bisexual men's stigma experiences and mental health: An 8-year longitudinal study.

This study investigated longitudinal trajectories of stigma (i.e., enacted, anticipated, internalized, concealed); stress-sensitive mental health disorder symptoms (i.e., depression, social anxiety); and their associations across 8 annual assessments in a sample of 128 young gay and bisexual U.S. university students. All forms of stigma significantly decreased over time, while depressive symptoms remained stable and social anxiety symptoms significantly increased. Men from higher socioeconomic backgrounds experienced quicker reductions in anticipated stigma, compared to men from lower socioeco

Correlates and moderators of stigma resistance among people with severe mental illness.

Research on factors associated with stigma resistance among people with severe mental illness remains relatively scant. This study aimed to (1) replicate previous findings linking stigma resistance with variables associated with recovery; (2) explore associations between stigma resistance and coping strategies and psychiatric symptoms; (3) compare these associations among individuals with different levels of self-stigma; and (4) examine whether race, age and education moderate these relationships. Analyses of a sample (n = 353) and sub-sample (n = 177) of persons with severe mental illness exa

Policies for recovery from drug use: Differences between public stigma and perceived stigma and associated factors.

INTRODUCTION: Public stigma towards people who use drugs is widespread and places obstacles in way of their recovery. Previous studies have used different approaches to measure public stigma, resulting in a notable gap in the understanding of the relationship between it and its associated factors. Some studies measure public stigma by assessing stigma perceived by those who use drugs, while others investigate attitudes towards them among the general public. This study aimed to compare perceived and public stigma, and factors related to these two variables. METHODS: The study comprised a cross

Exploring the impact of stigmatization on mental health in persons with liver disease: a scoping review.

Patients with liver conditions such as hepatitis B, C, and D, cirrhosis, metabolic dysfunction - associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), and metabolic dysfunction - associated steatohepatitis (MASH) frequently experience public, self, and structural stigma, which contribute to psychological distress, reduced Quality of Life (QoL), and lower engagement with healthcare. Stigma is often fueled by misconceptions linking liver disease to personal behaviour, moral failure, or contagion, disproportionately affecting marginalised populations. In this context, this scoping review examines how stigm

Stigma, isolation, and depression in Chinese and Korean American dementia caregivers.

INTRODUCTION: Affiliate stigma may cause depressive symptoms among Asian American dementia caregivers, yet few studies have examined the underlying mechanisms or cross-ethnic differences. METHODS: We analyzed data from 338 older dementia caregivers (176 Chinese Americans, 162 Korean Americans; mean age 68.8 years) who completed measures of affiliate stigma, social isolation, loneliness, and depressive symptoms. RESULTS: Higher stigma was associated with more severe depressive symptoms (p < 0.001). Mediation analyses suggest this effect is partly explained by increased social isolation (12.8%

HIV stigma trends in the general population during antiretroviral treatment expansion: analysis of 31 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, 2003-2013.

BACKGROUND: HIV-related stigma is associated with increased risk-taking behavior, reduced uptake of HIV testing, and decreased adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Although ART scale-up may reduce HIV-related stigma, the extent to which levels of stigma in the general population have changed during the era of ART scale-up in sub-Saharan Africa is unknown. METHODS: Social distance and anticipated stigma were operationalized using standard HIV-related stigma questions contained in the Demographic and Health Surveys and AIDS Indicator Surveys of 31 African countries between 2003 and 2013.

Conceptualising hepatitis C stigma: A thematic synthesis of qualitative research.

BACKGROUND: Stigma is an important element in the experience of living with chronic viral hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV), impacting healthcare access and uptake as well as health outcomes. Conceptualisations of stigma in research are, however, often assumed and implicit. This study aimed to synthesise and critically engage with the qualitative literature to provide an overarching conceptualisation of stigma as it pertains to viral hepatitis. METHODS: We critically reviewed qualitative literature that mobilised concepts or theories of stigma in relation to viral hepatitis. We searched seven ele

Stigma despite recovery: strategies for living in the aftermath of psychosis.

In this article, we identify an array of creative strategies used by persons diagnosed with schizophrenia-related illness to deflect and resist social stigma, and address the lived experience of deploying these strategies in the intersubjective context of everyday life. The data are derived from anthropological interviews and ethnographic observations of ninety persons who received treatment at community mental health facilities in an urban North American locale. Nearly all were keenly aware of stigma that permeated their lives. Their predicament is contradictory: on the one hand, they have re…

Understanding How Sexual and Gender Minority Stigmas Influence Depression Among Trans Women and Men Who Have Sex with Men in India.

PURPOSE: Few studies have assessed how sexual and gender minority stigmas affect the mental health of trans women and self-identified men who have sex with men (MSM) in India, populations with a high HIV burden. We tested whether social support and resilient coping act as mediators of the effect of sexual and gender minority stigmas on depression as proposed by Hatzenbuehler's psychological mediation framework, or as moderators based on Meyer's minority stress theory. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey among trans women (n = 300) and MSM (n = 300) recruited from urban and rural si
