Mass incarceration has shaped the environment of HIV transmission, yet there is limited research on the conditions that enhance or mitigate access to health and social resources for people living with HIV (PLWH) with criminal justice (CJ) involvement. This paper aims to explore structural vulnerability, social safety net services, and criminal justice involvement among PLWH. Among a communitybased sample of 336 PLWH in Baltimore, Maryland, we compared measures of structural vulnerability and access to safety net services on the outcome of either recent involvement or no involvement in the CJ s

Violence experienced by cisgender (cis) and gender minority women living with HIV is known to be high. More work is needed to better understand how to support women living with HIV who have experienced violence. The objectives of this study are therefore to identify the prevalence and correlates of violence by any perpetrator among women living with HIV in a Canadian setting. Data were drawn from 9 years (January, 2010 to February, 2019) of a longitudinal community-based open cohort study of 350+ cis and trans women living with HIV who were living and/or accessed care in Metro Vancouver, Canad

We examined the association between social-structural stressors-racial discrimination, incarceration, and unemployment-and depressive symptoms among 578 predominantly low-income urban Black men, ages 18-45. We also examined the extent to which two protective factors-social support and problem-solving coping-moderated the relationship between social-structural stressors and depressive symptoms. Results showed that more everyday racial discrimination and incarceration, but not unemployment, significantly predicted more depressive symptoms. The links between discrimination, incarceration, and dep

BACKGROUND: Depression is a robust predictor of nonadherence to antiretroviral (ARV) therapy, which is essential to prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT). Women in resource-limited settings face additional barriers to PMTCT adherence. Although structural barriers may be minimized by social support, depression and stigma may impede access to this support.
PURPOSE: To better understand modifiable factors that contribute to PMTCT adherence and inform intervention development.
METHODS: We tested an ARV adherence model using data from 200 pregnant women enrolled in PMTCT (median age

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Sexual minority (SM) populations experience higher rates of substance use disorder (SUD) associated with increased sexual orientation-related stress. Social support may moderate the impact of stress on SUD among SM adults. This study assessed associations between social support and DSM-5 SUD by sex and sexual minority identity.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional study using data from the 2012-13 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC-III).
SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A nationally representative cross-sectional sample of adults (n = 36 309) in the Unit

Chronic stress is associated with occurrence of many mental disorders. Previous studies have shown that dendrites and spines of pyramidal neurons of the prefrontal cortex undergo drastic reorganization following chronic stress experience. So the prefrontal cortex is believed to play a key role in response of neural system to chronic stress. However, how stress induces dynamic structural changes in neural circuit of prefrontal cortex remains unknown. In the present study, we examined the effects of chronic social defeat stress on dendritic spine structural plasticity in the mouse frontal associ

The aim of this study was to test whether social looming cognitive style accounts for the predictive association between early maladaptive schema domains and social anxiety. We predicted that early maladaptive schema domains would predict the increase of social anxiety over time and that social looming would act as a mediator between schema domains and social anxiety. A three-wave longitudinal design was used. The participants (N=471, 56.95% women) were Spanish adolescents and young adults aged between 16 and 25 years old (Mage=17.81, SD age=3.19). The results showed that three schema domains

The risk of smallpox reintroduction has motivated preparations in potential target countries. After reproducing the spatiotemporal pattern after the 1972 importation into Yugoslavia via coupled, biologically realistic systems of ordinary differential equations, we developed dynamic population models with current US age distributions and typical spatially distributed social structures. Surveillance and containment (S&C) coupled with vaccination of 95% of hospital-based health care workers (HCWs) within 2 days after the first diagnosis (estimated to be 18 days after aerosol release) were modeled…

The biochemical and functional characterization of wasp venom toxins is an important prerequisite for the development of new tools both for the therapy of the toxic reactions due to envenomation caused by multiple stinging accidents and also for the diagnosis and therapy of allergic reactions caused by this type of venom. PLA(1) was purified from the venom of the neotropical social wasp Polybia paulista by using molecular exclusion and cation exchange chromatographies; its amino acid sequence was determined by using automated Edman degradation and compared to the sequences of other vespid veno

We prospectively examined the relationship between perceived social support and abdominal fat distribution. A 3-year follow-up study of 235 randomly selected healthy adolescents and young adults was used. Abdominal fat distribution was measured by means of the waist to hip circumference ratio (WHR), and social support was measured by the Perceived Social Support Scale-Revised. Data were analysed using structural equation models. Changes in social support were inversely associated with changes in WHR, adjusted for body-mass index, among boys and men. This association was less evident among girl

INTRODUCTION: Globally, an estimated 56.8 million people require palliative care each year, with half in their final year of life. However, access appears to be scarce in the most impoverished settings, like rural sub-Saharan Africa. Africa is expected to experience a sharp rise in severe health-related suffering, underscoring the need to increase access to palliative care. METHODS: A convergent parallel mixed-methods design was conducted to assess factors affecting palliative care access and utilisation in rural Malawi. Interviews using a question guide were conducted with patients, caregiver

There is a lack of consensus on the role of structured nature experiences (SNEs) in mental, emotional, and social health (MESH) competencies across youth summer camp participants. This systematic review synthesized research on the relationship between SNEs and MESH competencies in camps since the emergence of positive youth development. Following a Google Scholar search, 21 articles were reviewed and synthesized. The findings revealed that SNEs consistently support growth in MESH competencies, particularly through experiential learning and nature immersion. The mental health domain was the mos

The bivalent fear of evaluation (BFOE) model of social anxiety disorder (SAD) posits that fear of evaluation consists of two distinct valences: fear of negative evaluation (FNE) and fear of positive evaluation (FPE). Reflecting this model, the BFOE Scale (BFOES) was developed by combining items from established FNE and FPE measures into a single integrated scale. This study aimed to (1) assess the psychometric properties of the Japanese version of the BFOES, and (2) examine the network structures of FNE, FPE, and SAD symptoms among Japanese individuals with and without SAD. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the review is to describe features of interventions that address social and structural conditions for individuals with select complex, chronic conditions: multiple sclerosis (MS), inflammatory arthritis, diabetes, or frailty.
INTRODUCTION: Despite advances in health care over the past 30 years, substantial heterogeneity in health outcomes persists across people with complex, chronic conditions. Social and structural conditions affect this heterogeneity and contribute to social vulnerability, marginalization and equity-seeking status.

A growing knowledge base highlights the importance of accounting for a variety of social and structural determinants of health (SDOH) when understanding mental and behavioral health among adolescents and young adults. The objective of the current study is to examine patterns of self-reported SDOH deficits and characterize participant health indicators and social identity across classes. Data is from a cross-sectional national study of young people who were recruited through study advertisements on social media and surveyed online. Data were collected between June 2022 and October 2023. Eligibi

Investigating social and independent behavior structure in early life is critical for understanding development and brain maturation in social mammals. However, this investigation necessitates monitoring animals over weeks to months often with subsecond time resolution creating challenges for both lab studies focused on brief observation periods and field studies in which animal tracking can be imprecise. Here we used machine vision and two-week long continuous behavior recordings of families of gerbils, a highly social rodent, in large, undisturbed home environments to quantify the behavioral

The well-being and functioning of individuals with chronic pain (CP) vary significantly. Social factors, such as social integration, may help explain this differential impact. Specifically, structural (network size, density) as well as functional (perceived social support, conflict) social network characteristics may play a role. However, it is not yet clear whether and how these variables are associated with each other. Objectives were to examine 1) both social network characteristics in individuals with primary and secondary CP, 2) the association between structural network characteristics a

Phenotyping approaches grounded in structural network science can offer insights into the neurobiological substrates of psychiatric diseases, but this remains to be clarified at the individual level in social anxiety disorder (SAD). Using a recently developed approach combining probability density estimation and Kullback-Leibler divergence, we constructed single-subject structural covariance networks (SCNs) based on multivariate morphometry (cortical thickness, surface area, curvature, and volume) and quantified their global/nodal network properties using graph-theoretical analysis. We compare
