Exploring Social Media Use and Anxiety Symptoms in Health Care Workers During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Cross-Sectional Secondary Data Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Health care workers (HCWs) experienced significant mental health challenges, particularly anxiety, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although social media became a primary source of information and connection, it was also a potential source of stress. The influence of social media on HCWs' anxiety is not well understood. OBJECTIVE: This study examined associations between social media use and anxiety symptoms among HCWs during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We conducted a secondary, cross-sectional analysis of data from the 2021 UC-COVID study (N=427 HCWs). Anxiety symptoms were ass

Social Participation for Health and Health Care Workers' Self-Management: Lessons from Socialist Yugoslavia for Contemporary Health Systems-A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Contemporary health systems continue to face persistent challenges in financing, equity, and governance, particularly under conditions of limited resources, workforce shortages, and demographic pressures. While the World Health Organization calls for strengthening social participation to achieve universal health coverage, evidence suggests that such participation often remains largely symbolic. Existing global examples of social participation in health are limited either by their short duration of implementation or by their limited scope. In contrast, the experience of f

Associations of acute stress disorder and depression with coping self-efficacy and perceived social support in healthcare workers during COVID-19.

Amid public health crises like the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers often face a heightened risk of Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) and depression. Nonetheless, few studies have investigated the connection and underlying mechanisms between COVID-19-induced ASD and depression among healthcare workers. This research sought to investigate how COVID-19-induced ASD promotes depressive symptoms among healthcare workers, examining coping self-efficacy as a mediator and perceived social support (PSS) as a moderator. We surveyed 331 Chinese healthcare workers involved in frontline efforts against the

Social and structural determinants associated with the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections among female commercial sex workers in Dhaka City, Bangladesh.

Female commercial sex workers (FCSWs) bear higher rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among key populations. The association of structural determinants and STIs among FCSWs was not at the forefront of research earlier in Bangladesh. This study examined how structural factors correlate with the prevalence of STIs at physical/social/economic/policy levels among FCSWs in Dhaka city. 495 FCSWs were screened for HIV, hepatitis B, and syphilis. Structural variables (Individual risks, high-risk sexual behaviors, work environments) were extracted from the previous multi-level study on FCSW

Examining Strategies among Veterans Affairs Outpatient Social Workers to Facilitate Job Retention and Emotional Well-Being during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The social work profession is dealing with an increased rate of turnover, due largely in part to the pandemic. A recent study showed that U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) inpatient social workers utilized strategies of "emotional preparedness" to retain their job during the pandemic. The aim of this current study is to explore if outpatient social workers utilized similar strategies for their own job retention. There may be differences in the strategies utilized because outpatient and inpatient social workers tend to work in different environments. In this qualitative study, authors co…

Social and structural factors associated with HIV infection among female sex workers who inject drugs in the Mexico-US border region.

BACKGROUND: FSWs who inject drugs (FSW-IDUs) can acquire HIV through high risk sexual and injection behaviors. We studied correlates of HIV infection among FSW-IDUs in northern Mexico, where sex work is quasi-legal and syringes can be legally obtained without a prescription. METHODS: FSW-IDUs>18 years old who reported injecting drugs and recent unprotected sex with clients in Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez underwent surveys and HIV/STI testing. Logistic regression identified correlates of HIV infection. RESULTS: Of 620 FSW-IDUs, prevalence of HIV, gonorrhea, Chlamydia, trichomonas, syphilis titer

Bridging the gap in aging systems: health literacy and community health worker workforce innovation to address health-related social needs.

INTRODUCTION: Older adults experience complex health and social challenges, including chronic disease, polypharmacy, caregiving demands, social isolation, and unmet health-related social needs (HRSN). Health literacy is a cross-cutting factor influencing the ability to find, understand, communicate about, and navigate health and social services. Community health workers (CHWs) are well positioned to address these intersections, yet integrated workforce training remains limited. METHODS: This manuscript describes a health literacy-centered CHW and frontline workforce training model emphasizing

Exploring the Impact of the 2020 COVID-19 Adjusted Lockdown on Social Workers at a Gender-Based Violence Command Centre in Pretoria, Gauteng.

INTRODUCTION: In South Africa and across many regions globally, adjusted lockdowns were implemented as a measure to curb the spread of COVID-19. These lockdowns had a significant effect on gender-based violence (GBV). Victims, often confined with their abusers, faced limited access to support services. Simultaneously, healthcare workers, including those at the Gender-Based Violence Command Centre (GBVCC), were at the forefront of the pandemic response, dealing with both COVID-19 and GBV cases. METHOD: A phenomenological approach was used to collect data from nine social workers at the GBVCC i…
