Three-dimensional soft-tissue and hard-tissue changes in the treatment of bimaxillary protrusion.

INTRODUCTION: Facial convexity related to bimaxillary protrusion is prevalent in many populations. Underlying skeletal protrusion combined with increased dentoalveolar protrusion contributes to facial muscle imbalance and lip incompetence, which is undesirable for many patients. In this study, we evaluated the relationship between soft-tissue and hard-tissue changes in an orthodontically treated Asian population. METHODS: Twenty-four consecutive adult Asian patients (mean age, 24 years), diagnosed with severe bimaxillary dentoalveolar protrusion, were evaluated using pretreatment and posttrea

Soft tissue response to mandibular advancement using 3D CBCT scanning.

This prospective longitudinal study assessed the 3D soft tissue changes following mandibular advancement surgery. Cranial base registration was performed for superimposition of virtual models built from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) volumes. Displacements at the soft and hard tissue chin (n = 20), lower incisors and lower lip (n = 21) were computed for presurgery to splint removal (4-6-week surgical outcome), presurgery to 1 year postsurgery (1-year surgical outcome), and splint removal to 1 year postsurgery (postsurgical adaptation). Qualitative evaluations of color maps illustrated th

Evaluation of computed tomography angiography plaque thickness measurements in high-grade carotid artery stenosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Increasing evidence suggests that carotid artery imaging can identify vulnerable plaque elements that increase stroke risk. We correlated recently proposed markers, soft and hard plaque thickness measurements on axial computed tomography angiography source images, with symptomatic disease status (ipsilateral stroke or transient ischemic attack) in high-grade carotid disease. METHODS: Soft plaque and hard plaque thickness were measured with a recently validated technique using computed tomography angiography source images in subjects with ≥70% extracranial carotid arter

Temporal deep neural network for tactile sensing in artificial finger pulp skin.

Tactile perception plays a vital role in artificial finger pulp skin, especially in regions responsible for grasping and touching tasks, where precise sensing of deformation position and applied force is critical. Conventional demodulation methods often fail to fully leverage temporal correlations in data during the pressing process, limiting the accuracy of tactile demodulation. To address this, we propose a tactile sensing system based on quasi-distributed Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) integrated into artificial finger pulp skin, along with a two-stage hybrid LSTM-Transformer neural network (T

[Multifactorial stepwise regression analysis of videofluoroscopic measurement and speech function after the repair of cleft palates].

The relationship between phonating and the multiview videofluoroscopic measurement of velopharyngeal range was studied by multifactorial stepwise regression analysis using an electronic computer. The results showed: (1) The degree of velopharyngeal closure is the most important factor during phonating; (2) There are close correlations between the degree of clearness of speech, the raising angle of soft palate and the contracture ability of lateral pharyngeal walls; (3) There are close relations between the length of soft palate and the degree of velopharyngeal closure; (4) There are also close

[A lightweight convolutional neural network for myositis classification from muscle ultrasound images].

Existing classification methods for myositis ultrasound images have problems of poor classification performance or high computational cost. Motivated by this difficulty, a lightweight neural network based on a soft threshold attention mechanism is proposed to cater for a better IIMs classification. The proposed network was constructed by alternately using depthwise separable convolution (DSC) and conventional convolution (CConv). Moreover, a soft threshold attention mechanism was leveraged to enhance the extraction capabilities of key features. Compared with the current dual-branch feature fus

Computer-Assisted Navigation in Total Knee Arthroplasty.

Manual total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has successfully treated end-stage knee osteoarthritis for several years. However, recent technological advancements have enabled surgeons to perform TKA with more accuracy and precision. Aligning the femoral and tibial components perpendicular to the mechanical axes of the femur and tibia is a fundamental principle for restoring knee kinematics and soft-tissue balance. Computer-assisted robotic TKA has proven its ability to fine tune lower leg alignment, component position, and soft-tissue balancing. Furthermore, robotic-assisted TKA (RATKA) offers the add

Imaging of primary retroperitoneal neoplasms.

Retroperitoneal soft tissue tumors are frequently incidental findings on imaging tests as Computed tomography (CT) or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Retroperitoneal soft tissue tumors are rare and therefore not common in daily radiological practice. Clinician and radiologist'skills to set retroperitoneal soft tissue tumors at presentation is crucial for a correct patient management. So far, several diagnostic algorithms have been proposed to assess retroperitoneal masses, which have not been validated by case histories (2-5). The aim of this article is to evaluate a new classification of re

First case of salivary mucocele originating from the minor salivary gland of the soft palate in a dog.

We found a case of salivary mucocele that originated in the minor salivary gland (palatine gland) of the soft palate in a dog. At first admission, the soft palate swelled remarkably. Computed tomography (CT) revealed cystic radiolucency inside a large quantity of liquid in the soft palate, and most of the airway was occupied. Marsupialization was performed, but since a recurrence was observed one month later, the salivary mucocele was removed. There has been no report of salivary mucocele arising from the minor salivary gland of the soft palate in dogs. To our knowledge, this case is the first

SoftAR: visually manipulating haptic softness perception in spatial augmented reality.

We present SoftAR, a novel spatial augmented reality (AR) technique based on a pseudo-haptics mechanism that visually manipulates the sense of softness perceived by a user pushing a soft physical object. Considering the limitations of projection-based approaches that change only the surface appearance of a physical object, we propose two projection visual effects, i.e., surface deformation effect (SDE) and body appearance effect (BAE), on the basis of the observations of humans pushing physical objects. The SDE visualizes a two-dimensional deformation of the object surface with a controlled so

Robust geometrical parametrization of the lower limb for the digital twin of patients under compression therapy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Compression therapy is extensively used for the treatment of venous deficiency and edema in the lower limb. The applied compression improves fluid circulation, which reduces the interstitial fluid accumulation. However, the effect of compression garments on soft tissues is poorly understood due to the high variability among the patients. With the long-term goal of designing patient-specific compression therapy, this study aims to develop a real-time simulation tool, able to predict the mechanical response of soft tissues of the lower limb under compression. METHODS:

A novel forensic protocol for age reversal facial approximation from elderly skulls using computed tomography scans, CAD techniques and anthropometric data.

This study presents a detailed protocol for reconstructing a realistic youthful face from the skull of an elderly individual, based on Computed Tomography (CT) scans. The methodology addresses critical age-related changes, including mandibular displacement, tooth loss, and the degradation of supporting bone structures. The soft tissue reconstruction adheres to current forensic anthropology standards, utilizing average soft tissue thickness measurements at key landmarks. These measurements are derived from statistical analyses of large datasets that consider factors like ethnicity, age, and Bod

Biomechanics of the soft-palate in sleep apnea patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Highly compliant tissue supporting the pharynx and low muscle tone enhance the possibility of upper airway occlusion in children with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The present study describes subject-specific computational modeling of flow-induced velopharyngeal narrowing in a female child with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) with OSA and a non-OSA control. Anatomically accurate three-dimensional geometries of the upper airway and soft-palate were reconstructed for both subjects using magnetic resonance (MR) images. A fluid-structure interaction (FSI) shape registration analysis was perfor

[Comments on the problem of demonstrating vertebral bodies in the computer tomogram (author's transl)].

This article emphasises that computer tomography is suitable for disclosing occult destructions in the region of the vertebral column. On the other hand, computer tomography is of great importance for determining the extent of destructions which are already manifest, and any possible spreading of a pathological process in the soft parts to the vertebral column.

A Tongue-Computer Tactile Interface Mediated by the Magnetoelectric-Driven Tribovoltaic Sensors.

Current human-computer interaction (HCI) technologies often suffer from wearing discomfort, noise sensitivity, user fatigue, and privacy concerns, particularly for users with physical disabilities or those requiring high-precision control. In this study, we address the aforementioned challenges by designing an interactive tongue-computer interface (ITCI) that enables precise, hands-free interaction through subtle tongue movements. The ITCI utilizes an array of direct current tribovoltaic tactile sensors enhanced by the magnetoelectric effect, achieving a peak current density of 10.72 A m-2, a
