[The complicated ankle sprain].

Inadequate healing and rehabilitation after an ankle sprain may lead to chronic ankle instability, predisposing patients to impingement symptoms. The initial injury may also cause osteochondral lesions of the talus or peroneal tendon injuries, which are frequently underdiagnosed because symptoms overlap early with those of a simple ankle sprain. This review finds that rehabilitation remains the cornerstone of treatment for instability and impingement, while peroneal injuries are typically managed surgically. Management of osteochondral lesions depends on the type and severity.

[Time-loss and recurrence rates after lateral ankle ligament sprains in male elite football players: summary of a systematic review and meta-analysis].

A literature search was conducted to systematically review and meta-analyse time-loss and recurrence rates of lateral ankle sprains (LAS) in male professional football players. Six electronic databases were screened separately for time-loss and recurrence rates after lateral ankle sprains in elite football players. A total of 13 (recurrence) and 12 (time-loss) studies met the previously defined inclusion criteria. The total sample size of the recurrence studies was 36.201 participants (44.404 overall initial injuries, 7944 initial ankle sprain (AS) injuries, 1193 recurrent AS injuries). 16.442

A novel synergistic device for joint inflammation - efficacy on ankle sprain cases.

Joint inflammation results from soft-tissue injuries and cartilage damage. PRICE is the standard treatment approach for acute soft tissue injuries like ankle sprain. Electrical stimulation, application of orthotic braces, etc. is also effective for this. In a synergistic device all these components are combined and applied simultaneously. This device was developed for joint inflammation and tested for grade I & II acute ankle joint sprain. To test a synergistic - semirigid device, combining PRICE & electrical stimulation for acute ankle sprains of grades I & II for pain, range of motion and sw

Robust Method for Mid-Activity Tracking and Evaluation of Ankle Health Post-Injury.

To present a robust methodology for evaluating ankle health during ambulation using a wearable device. Methods: We developed a novel data capture system that leverages changes within the ankle during ambulation for real-time tracking of bioimpedance. The novel analysis compares the range of reactance at 5 kHz to the range of reactance at 100 kHz; which removes the technique's previous reliance on a known baseline. To aid in interpretation of the measurements, we developed a quantitative simulation model based on a literature review of the effects on joint bioimpedance of variations in edematou

Return to sport decisions after an acute lateral ankle sprain injury: introducing the PAASS framework-an international multidisciplinary consensus.

BACKGROUND: Despite being the most commonly incurred sports injury with a high recurrence rate, there are no guidelines to inform return to sport (RTS) decisions following acute lateral ankle sprain injuries. We aimed to develop a list of assessment items to address this gap. METHODS: We used a three-round Delphi survey approach to develop consensus of opinion among 155 globally diverse health professionals working in elite field or court sports. This involved surveys that were structured in question format with both closed-response and open-response options. We asked panellists to indicate t

An inverted ankle joint orientation at foot strike could incite ankle inversion sprain: Comparison between injury and non-injured cutting motions of a tennis player.

Ankle sprain is very common in sports. Research on its prevention is as important as on its treatment as recommended in the 2016 consensus statement of the International Ankle Consortium. Successful prevention depends on the understanding of its mechanism, which has been presented with quantities in some recent case reports. Inciting event was suggested to be an inverted ankle joint at foot strike, however, is still lacking evidence from comparison with non-injury trials. This study investigated the ankle joint orientation at foot strike in successful non-injury cases and compared them with a

Foot and Ankle Conditions: Chronic Lateral Ankle Pain.

Chronic ankle pain is relatively common in family medicine. Sequelae from lateral ankle sprains are the most common cause. Other etiologies include peroneal tendinopathy or subluxation, osteochondral injury, lateral ankle impingement, sinus tarsi syndrome, cuboid syndrome, bony stress injury, and other unusual factors. A thorough history focusing on the mechanism of injury (if traumatic) and the nature of the pain along with a targeted physical examination typically will provide the information needed to make the diagnosis. Imaging might be necessary for diagnosis or confirmation of the diagno

Injuries in women's ice hockey: special considerations.

Ice hockey is a popular collision sport with a growing number of female athletes participating each year. As participation among girls and women continues to increase, it will be important to recognize common injuries occurring during women's games. Despite difference in the rules that prohibit body checking in women's and girls' games, injury profiles are similar to those of their male counterparts. Concussions, contusions, acromioclavicular joint injuries, ligamentous knee injuries, and muscle strains occur during women's ice hockey games, with groin strains accounting for the most common pr

Chronic ankle instability.

Chronic instability of the ankle and anterolateral impingement syndrome are abnormalities that present as a result of inversion and forced plantar-flexion traumas of the foot, despite strict conservative management in the ER and in rehabilitation. A conservative approach is always the first choice of treatment, including anti-inflammatory medications, rehabilitation and proprioception, infiltration with steroids in impingement cases, and use of orthotics, whose true effectiveness is the subject of multiple studies and much debate. Good to excellent results can be obtained surgically with a min

Syndesmosis sprains of the ankle: a systematic review.

Syndesmosis sprains have received increasing recognition during recent years because of a heightened awareness of the mechanism, symptoms, and signs of injury. Syndesmosis injuries take longer to recover than lateral ankle sprains, and no consensus exists regarding optimal treatment of these injuries. Therefore, we undertook a systematic review of the literature to evaluate the effect of treatment on outcome following syndesmosis injury. We identified six articles that evaluated treatment of syndesmosis injuries. All studies were case series including prospectively collected data of young, act

[Ankle sprain. Management of recent lesions and prevention of secondary instability].

Ankle sprains are among the most common musculoskeletal injuries. The vast majority of these injuries are lateral ligament sprains, resulting from inversion of the plantar-flexed foot. Initial management should include rest, ice, compression and elevation. Functional treatment proved to provide the quickest recovery and an earlier return to work without compromising the lateral mechanical stability. Surgical management of acute ankle sprains is rarely, if ever, indicated. Patients who continue to sustain multiple recurrent inversion sprains despite a supervised rehabilitation program aimed at

Management of ankle sprains.

Without adequate care, acute ankle trauma can result in chronic joint instability. Use of a standardized protocol enhances the management of ankle sprains. In patients with grades I or II sprains, emphasis should be placed on accurate diagnosis, early use of RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation), maintenance of range of motion and use of an ankle support. Sprains with complete ligament [corrected] tears (grade III) may require surgical intervention. Although early motion and mobility are recommended, ligamentous strength does not return until months after an ankle sprain.

Pseudoaneurysm of the lateral malleolar artery after an ankle sprain: case report and review of the literature.

A pseudoaneurysm of the peroneal artery or one of its branches is rare after trauma. The diagnosis is frequently delayed, resulting in substantial morbidity to the patient. The infrequent occurrence of this condition has resulted in a lack of diagnostic and treatment guidelines. However, when recognized, prompt attention involving either surgical ligation or embolization of the injured arterial branch is the most reliable method of treatment. Presented is a report of a patient who developed a lateral malleolar arterial pseudoaneurysm after an ankle sprain, which was treated successfully with a
