Implementing Two Models for Lifestyle Medicine Maternal Group Visits and Resident Training.

Despite high health care expenditure, the United States reports a steady increase in maternal mortality. Chronic lifestyle diseases that complicate pregnancy can be improved through lifestyle medicine. Though lifestyle medicine is supported across multiple medical disciplines, minimal physician knowledge and time constraints limit its implementation. Group visits are an effective way to promote lifestyle medicine. Two new group visit models that integrate lifestyle medicine into perinatal care are described. Conscious Motherhood (CM) is an 8-week group visit program implemented at an FQHC that

Internal Medicine Residency Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Consensus Recommendations for Core Indications and Applications.

BACKGROUND: Bedside point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is quickly becoming a routine part of internal medicine practice and training. The optimal POCUS training venue for internists is at the graduate medical education or residency stage of their career. Despite increased training, clinical use, and broad internal medicine society endorsement in the United States, no internal medicine POCUS consensus curricula exist. The goal of this consensus process was to guide the core elements for inclusion within internal medicine residency POCUS curricula in the United States. METHODS: A 4-step modified

Letter and landscape: early Soviet plant hunting in Transbaikalia and the relocations of Tibetan medicine between environments and epistemologies.

The early decades of Soviet rule saw dramatic developments in medicine and public health. Many regions of the new state, particularly the so-called 'national peripheries', underwent extensive health reform. Vernacular medical practices, which were often embedded in religious doctrines, were to be eradicated. Paradoxically, a keen interest in alternative medical knowledge also emerged, resulting in institutionalised research in ethnobotany and ethnopharmacology and recruiting heterodox practitioners as research partners. This article discusses how Buryat Tibetan medicine of Transbaikal Buddhist

epic2: National evidence-based guidelines for preventing healthcare-associated infections in NHS hospitals in England.

National evidence-based guidelines for preventing healthcare-associated infections (HCAI) in National Health Service (NHS) hospitals in England were commissioned by the Department of Health (DH) and developed during 1998-2000 by a nurse-led multi-professional team of researchers and specialist clinicians. Following extensive consultation, they were published in January 2001. These guidelines describe the precautions healthcare workers should take in three areas: standard principles for preventing HCAI, which include hospital environmental hygiene, hand hygiene, the use of personal protective e

Biomarkers for Hearing Dysfunction: Facts and Outlook.

In medicine, biomarkers are a metric for disease state. More generally, a biomarker is anything that can be used as an indicator for a particular disease state or any physiological state of an organism. Here, we introduce functional and molecular biomarkers that are useful for categorizing defined subtypes of hearing disorder, which can help to selectively trace a particular dysfunction of the inner ear and the auditory pathway to disease.

[Technical specifications for rational clinical use of parenterally administered Chinese medicine (draft version for comments)].

The regulations on basic clinical use of parenterally administered Chinese medicine, issued jointly in 2008, by the ministry of health (MOH), China food and drug administration (SFDA) and the state administration of traditional Chinese medicine (SATCM). Integrating actual clinical practice, these presented doctors and nurses with detailed specifications for the safe use of parenterally administered Chinese medicine. The regulations emphasize the use of Chinese medicine pattern differentiation, use in strict accordance with instructions, and they prohibit use combined with other medicines. The

Food Is More Than Just Medicine.

State Medicaid agencies are increasingly developing Food Is Medicine programs with the aim of improving health outcomes and lowering health-related costs for low-income people. The role of food in people's lives is influenced by a complex interplay of socio-ecological systems, including personal values and beliefs, social interactions, and community development. To make Food Is Medicine programs in Medicaid more effective, states can integrate a more nuanced understanding of the larger role that food plays in society into their Food Is Medicine program design and implementation. This includes

Ficto-Primitive Capital: What Wellness Seekers Gain From Practicing Shamanism and Other Healing Traditions.

Behind its worldly and socially conscious aesthetic, the wellness industry serves the health and fitness interests of North American and European consumers by commercializing non-Western and Indigenous healing traditions, including shamanistic practices. Explored in this paper, "American shamans" seek to heal a range of maladies by collecting traditions found outside of their own cultural heritage, from ceremonies of the Q'ero people in the Andes to those of the Sámi in Scandinavia. As part of an ethnographic study, this paper draws from participant observation and a sample of 41 interviews wi

Application of state-target application of painful arthritis liver and kidney deficiency: A review.

In recent years, with the progress and development of the times, our eating habits and lifestyle changes have led to an increase in gouty arthritis annually, with the main use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and other drugs. These drugs are highly dependent, resulting in an unresponsive state, which is easy to recur. Therefore, more and more patients choose traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to treat them. After years of continuous exploration and rich clinical experience accumulation, Academician TongXiaolin put forward the dialectical strategy of "combination of state and target" in

Trend Analysis of Travel Medicine Topics Presented at an International Tropical Medicine Conference.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a rapid increase in international travel. Travel medicine is a branch of preventive medicine focusing on risk assessment pre-travel, during travel and post-travel with the aim of promoting health and preventing adverse health outcomes. Travel medicine specialists inform travelers about potential health risks and mitigate infectious disease risks such as travelers' diarrhea, yellow fever, and malaria. Travel medicine topics were popular in the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene conferences between 2016 and 2020, and now comprise approxima

Waivers for disqualifying medical conditions in U.S. Naval aviation personnel.

In the United States Navy, many diagnoses are considered disqualifying for aviation duty, but aircrew may be "waived" to return to flight duties after resolution of the disease or appropriate treatment of the condition. Personnel with waivers are usually subject to more frequent physical examinations and/or special diagnostic procedures. Although the Naval Aerospace and Operational Medical Institute promulgates written aeromedical guidelines as to which diseases may be waived and which may not, waivers are granted on a case-by-case basis considering not only the diagnosis, but the age, experie

Terminology used to describe volume expanding resuscitation fluid.

Many published reports state that the type of resuscitation fluid to be used for volume expansion should be "isotonic crystalloid" or "isotonic fluid". Generally, this terminology refers to normal saline (NS) and lactated Ringer's (LR) solution. This terminology is suboptimal technically since not all "isotonic" crystalloids are sufficient volume expanders. A total of 48 reference books from the areas of general pediatrics, pediatric emergency medicine, emergency medicine, pediatric critical care, pediatric surgery, general surgery, internal medicine, family medicine, adult critical care, obst
