Psychosocial Stress-Induced Takotsubo Syndrome in a Male Patient: Breaking the Stereotype.

BACKGROUND: Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) predominantly affects postmenopausal women after emotional or physical stress; men account for only ∼10% of cases and are usually triggered by physical precipitants. CASE SUMMARY: A 48-year-old man presented with 24 hours of dyspnea following psychosocial stress related to financial and occupational strain. He was diagnosed with TTS complicated by dynamic left ventricular outflow tract obstruction and 4 discrete apical thrombi identified on cardiac magnetic resonance, and recovered fully with β-blockade and anticoagulation. DISCUSSION: This case is doubly

Theoretical Orientations and the Stereotype Content Model - Are Prejudices Barriers to Psychotherapy Integration?

BACKGROUND: Despite efforts to integrate psychotherapy, the field remains fragmented into distinct theoretical orientations and practical approaches. Prejudices held by psychotherapists towards those from other theoretical orientations may hinder cooperation in research and clinical practice. This study examines stereotypes among psychotherapists from different theoretical orientations and practical approaches ('psychotherapy schools') towards their in-group and out-group colleagues. METHOD: The cross-sectional online study assessed socially shared evaluations of 'warmth' and 'competence' fro

The GAB-A: Development and Validation of the Gender Stereotypes and Roles Adherence Battery for Adolescents.

Validated instruments assessing gender stereotype endorsement among adolescents are scarce and often overlook contemporary domains like digital privacy. To address this gap, this study developed and validated the Gender Stereotypes and Roles Adherence Battery for Adolescents (GAB-A) in a sample of 2955 Italian adolescents attending public secondary schools in Rome (56.4% male; mean age 14.3 years). The battery comprises three modules: the Gender Stereotyped Attitude Scale (GSAS), Gender Role Activities Scale (GRAS), and Gendered Traits Inventory (GTI). Psychometric analysis confirmed robust fa

Stereotypical conceptions of women's roles in contemporary Kyrgyz society: a psychological analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Women's social roles in the Kyrgyz Republic are shaped by the coexistence of long-established family-centered expectations and expanding participation in education, employment, and public life. This study examined perceived media images of women, benevolent and hostile sexism, gender-role traditionalism, and cultural-value orientations, and identified the attitudinal, cultural, and demographic correlates of gender-role traditionalism. METHODS: A quantitative cross-sectional online survey was conducted with 242 adults residing in the Kyrgyz Republic, recruited through non-probabi

Racial stereotypes bias the neural representation of objects towards perceived weapons.

Racial stereotypes have been shown to bias the identification of innocuous objects, making objects like wallets or tools more likely to be identified as weapons when encountered in the presence of Black individuals. One mechanism that may contribute to these biased identifications is a transient perceptual distortion driven by racial stereotypes. Here we provide neuroimaging evidence that a bias in visual representation due to automatically activated racial stereotypes may be a mechanism underlying this phenomenon. During fMRI, tools presented after Black face primes induced neural response pa

A Review of Approaches for Addressing Oral Stereotypic Behavior in Zoo-Housed Giraffes.

Addressing the presence of stereotypies - repetitive, functionless behaviors - has been at the forefront of contemporary welfare research in zoos. Stereotypies present themselves in many different forms, dependent on the biology of a species, internal and external motivational factors, individual animals' history, and early development. In the case of giraffes, a popular and charismatic species found in zoos, stereotypies concerning the mouth and tongue - oral stereotypies - are especially prevalent. Various hypotheses have been developed in tandem with the observation of giraffe oral stereoty

Do cows with stereotypic tongue-rolling behaviour cope better with their environment?

INTRODUCTION: Stereotypic behaviours, especially oral stereotypic behaviours, are frequently expressed in farm animals. Tongue-rolling is the most common oral stereotypic behaviour in dairy cows (Bos taurus). If animals frequently display stereotypic behaviours, this is an indication of poor welfare. It has been suggested that animals express stereotypic behaviours as a way of coping with stress. As a result, animals with stereotypic behaviours may have lower levels of stress hormones than animals without stereotypic behaviours. METHODS: In this study, 916 Holstein cows in the first lactation

Effects of Stereotypes on Relationships and Interpersonal Functioning: An Investigation of Social Anxiety Disorder.

In this study, we explored the associations between endorsing two stereotypes of people with social anxiety disorder (SAD; i.e., the social inhibition stereotype and the oddity stereotype), and interpersonal outcomes. We performed a secondary data analysis on a sample of participants with SAD (n = 75) and without SAD (n = 60) who completed multiple study visits, including diagnostic interviews, and brought friends (n = 91) and romantic partners (n = 61) into the study. To investigate effects of endorsing stereotypes of SAD on relationship satisfaction, we examined participant self-report ratin

Automated Analysis of Stereotypical Movements in Videos of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder.

IMPORTANCE: Stereotypical motor movements (SMMs) are a form of restricted and repetitive behavior, which is a core symptom of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Current quantification of SMM severity is extremely limited, with studies relying on coarse and subjective caregiver reports or laborious manual annotation of short video recordings. OBJECTIVE: To assess the utility of a new open-source AI algorithm that can analyze extensive video recordings of children and automatically identify segments with heterogeneous SMMs, thereby enabling their direct and objective quantification. The inhibitory effect of nicotine on Lumbriculus variegatus stereotypical movements and locomotor activity.

Nicotine has been shown to induce profound physiological and behavioural responses in invertebrate model organisms such as Caenorhabditis elegans and Drosophila melanogaster. Lumbriculus variegatus is an aquatic oligochaete worm which we have previously demonstrated has application within pharmacological research. Herein, we demonstrate the presence of endogenous acetylcholine and cholinesterase activity within L. variegatus and show the time-dependent effects on the sensitivity of L. variegatus to nicotine. We describe the effects of a broad range of concentrations of nicotine (1 μM - 1 mM) o

Spontaneous alternation and stereotypical behaviour in deer mice: response to escitalopram and levetiracetam.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is varyingly associated with cognitive impairment, that is, deficits in spatial working memory, although it seems unlikely that this is generalised across all domains of functioning. Further, it is unclear whether symptoms will respond to potentially novel, non-serotonergic drugs that have shown promise as so-called cognitive enhancers. Here, we studied low (Norm-N; n = 31) and compulsive-like high (Comp-H; n = 34) stereotypical deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii) to establish (1) whether there is a relationship between stereotypical intensity and working m

The influence of prescriber and patient gender on the prescription of benzodiazepines: evidence for stereotypes and biases?

PURPOSE: Benzodiazepines are commonly prescribed globally. We hypothesize that gender stereotypes influence benzodiazepine prescriptions insofar as male prescribers are more likely to prescribe benzodiazepines to female patients. METHODS: Our nationwide cohort study included 2,127,441 patients with a psychiatric disorder (ICD-9 codes 290-319) and 38,932 prescribers as part of the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (1997-2013). We evaluated the effects of patient and prescriber gender on the proportion of patients prescribed benzodiazepines and the cumulative dosage of benzodia

Effects of Physical Exercise on the Stereotyped Behavior of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Background and Objectives: Recent studies have shown the existence of a positive relationship between physical exercise, symptomatic improvement, and reduction of damage caused by comorbidities associated with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) in children, adolescents, and adults. The aim of this systematic review with meta-analysis (SRM) was to estimate the effects of physical exercise (PE) on the stereotyped behaviors of children with a diagnosis of ASD in intervention studies. Materials and Methods: The design followed the PRISMA guidelines and the TREND statement to assess the quality of in

Stereotyped antibody responses target posttranslationally modified gluten in celiac disease.

The role of B cells and posttranslational modifications in pathogenesis of organ-specific immune diseases is increasingly envisioned but remains poorly understood, particularly in human disorders. In celiac disease, transglutaminase 2-modified (TG2-modified; deamidated) gluten peptides drive disease-specific T cell and B cell responses, and antibodies to deamidated gluten peptides are excellent diagnostic markers. Here, we substantiate by high-throughput sequencing of IGHV genes that antibodies to a disease-specific, deamidated, and immunodominant B cell epitope of gluten (PLQPEQPFP) have bias

Theory of mind is related to children's resource allocations in gender stereotypic contexts.

The present study investigated the relations between 4- to 6-year-old children's (N = 67) gender stereotypes, resource allocations, and mental state knowledge in gender-stereotypic contexts. Participants were told vignettes about female and male characters completing gender-stereotyped activities (making dolls or trucks). Children held stereotypic expectations regarding doll- and truck-making abilities, and these expectations predicted the degree of bias in their allocations of resources to the characters. Critically, children's performance on a Theory of Mind (ToM) Scale (Diverse Desires [DD]

Prior knowledge of character locational stereotypes and representations during text comprehension.

Certain character locational stereotypes are expected to affect constructions of mental representations during text comprehension. The present study examined whether readers' prior knowledge of character locational stereotypes affects the construction of these character representations during text comprehension. Two short stories were presented to the participants. In one story, God, and two people wearing blue and green clothes, respectively, appeared in a room in that order (God condition). In the other, three people appeared in red, blue, and green clothes, respectively (three-people condit

If You Are Old and Do Not Want to Fall into The Traditional Stereotype--Be Physically Active!

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND/STUDY CONTEXT: Based on the stereotype content model and the behaviors from intergroup affect and stereotypes map (Cuddy et al., 2008; Advances in experimental social psychology [Vol. 40, pp. 61-149], New York: Academic Press), we examined whether being physically active may challenge the traditional stereotypes related to older adults. METHODS: We compared how 94 participants (M(age) = 24.48 years, SD = 7.15 years) judged one of three target groups (older adults in general, physically active older adults, and socially active older adults), with regard to perceived stat

Stereotyped behaviors predicting self-injurious behavior in individuals with intellectual disabilities.

We examined the relation between stereotyped behavior and self-injurious behavior (SIB) for 1871 individuals with intellectual disabilities who had a score of >0 on the Behavior Problem Inventory (BPI-01; Rojahn et al., 2001). We report three main findings: First, structural equation modeling techniques (SEM) revealed that the BPI-01stereotyped behavior subscale scores predicted BPI-01 SIB subscale scores. Second, when stereotyped behavior was modeled as a predictor of SIB, mixture-modeling techniques revealed two groups of individuals: one in which stereotyped behavior was a strong, statistic
