Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) disease can affect dogs of all sizes. The literature describing tibial plateau angle (TPA) in small breed dogs is limited. A retrospective study was conducted in unselected dogs presented for stifle or tibial examination to compare TPA in small breed dogs (n = 146 dogs, 185 stifles) versus large breed dogs (n = 200 dogs, 265 stifles). Small breed dogs had a mean TPA 3.1° ± 0.6° higher than large breed dogs. There were higher TPAs in spayed females and castrated males for all dogs compared with intact males (3.6° ± 1.0° and 2.7° ± 1.0°, respectively). Dogs with u

Cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) disease causes variable stifle instability assessed by specific clinical tests. Radiographs are performed to measure the tibial plateau angle (TPA) for planning tibial plateau leveling osteotomy (TPLO) surgery. Concomitant damage to other intra-articular structures, for which clinical detection is unreliable, may occur and potentially affect the surgical outcome. Joint assessment during TPLO through instrumented inspection is therefore advised, though it increases the risk of complications. Magnetic resonance imaging offers a noninvasive alternative, adds inform

The distribution of the three known species of Onchocerca in Australian cattle is described. O. gutterosa was found in the ligamentum nuchae, on the scapular cartilage and in the hip, stifle and shoulder regiobns. Nodules of O. gibsoni were found in the brisket, stifle and hip regions, while O; lienalis occurred along the gastrosplenic ligament and above the xiphisternum. O. gutturosa is potentially the most important species to the meat industry since it is widely distributed in the carcase and is easily missed during inspection. Trimming procedures which could be used to ensure removal of kn

A 3-month-old male umbrella cockatoo (Cacatua alba) was presented because of acute non-weight-bearing lameness of the right leg. Marked soft tissue swelling was present around the femorotibiotarsal (stifle) joint, and the radiographic diagnosis was right medial femorotibiotarsal subluxation. Surgical management was elected, and the stifle joint was approached via a lateral parapatellar incision. Joint exploration revealed damage to the lateral meniscus, tendon of origin of the cranial tibial muscle, and cranial cruciate ligament. After debriding the disrupted meniscus, the stifle joint was ana

OBJECTIVE: To determine if a novel radiographic stitching technique yields accurate tibial plateau angle (TPA) measurements in large and giant breed dogs.
METHODS: Three medio-lateral digital radiographic projections (traditional TPLO, stifle-centred, tarsus-centred) were obtained from each of 17 pairs of pelvic limbs from skeletally mature large and giant breed dogs. Eight observers performed image stitching followed by TPA measurements on the stitched (sTPA) and traditional radiographs (tTPA). The TPA was also measured on photographs made of isolated anatomical tibial specimens (aTPA). Meas

CASE SUMMARY: A 2-year-old female spayed domestic shorthair cat presented with acute left pelvic limb lameness after suspected trauma. Orthopaedic and radiographic findings were consistent with rupture of the medial collateral and caudal cruciate ligaments. Surgical exploration identified complete rupture of the caudal cruciate and medial collateral ligaments, as well as a crushed medial meniscus, necessitating partial medial meniscectomy. Primary repair of the medial collateral ligament was performed and a Mini TightRope (Arthrex) prosthesis was positioned to concurrently aid stifle stability

To determine the validity of a method for induction of experimental hemarthrosis in dogs and for the nuclear imaging of hemarthrosis, serial technetium-99m pyrophosphate [( 99mTc]PYP) flow and blood-pool scans were performed monthly in eight dogs who received bi-weekly injections of autologous blood into their femoro-tibial joints (also called stifle joint). In four control dogs, one joint was injected with saline while the other joint received only a sham injection. In addition, two dogs received intra-articular injections of autologous blood into their right stifle joint and saline into thei

This study examined the effect of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) administration on the repair of articular cartilage damage in domestic pigs with experimentally induced leg weakness. The left hind stifle joints of six 56-day-old castrated domestic pigs were artificially injured; PRP was injected into the stifle joints of three pigs. Histopathological analysis of dissected articular cartilage revealed that all specimens were lightly stained with Alcian blue, and regions containing immature chondrocytes or chondrocyte clusters indicated cartilage repair. The average cartilage thickness was 189.44 μm

Even though radiography is one of the most frequently used imaging techniques for orthopaedic disorders, it has been demonstrated that the interpretation can vary between assessors. As such, the purpose of this study was to examine the intraobserver and interobserver agreement and the influence of level of expertise on the interpretation of radiographs of the stifle in dogs with and without cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR). Sixteen observers, divided in four groups according to their level of experience, evaluated 30 radiographs (15 cases with CCLR and 15 control stifles) twice. Each o

This study investigated the effects of osteoarthritis (OA) on somatosensory processing in dogs using mechanical threshold testing. A pressure algometer was used to measure mechanical thresholds in 27 dogs with presumed hind limb osteoarthritis and 28 healthy dogs. Mechanical thresholds were measured at the stifles, radii and sternum, and were correlated with scores from an owner questionnaire and a clinical checklist, a scoring system that quantified clinical signs of osteoarthritis. The effects of age and bodyweight on mechanical thresholds were also investigated. Multiple regression models i

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Injuries of the equine stifle are frequent causes of hindlimb lameness. Ultrasonography is useful for the diagnosis of many soft tissue lesions but, until recently, its application to the equine stifle has been limited to a description of normal and abnormal structures. A comparative study using gross anatomical sections to identify all structures visible on ultrasonographic images of the equine stifle has not previously been reported.
OBJECTIVES: To provide a comprehensive comparative cross-sectional atlas of the normal equine medial femorotibial (MFT) joint and
