Phosphorus (P) recovery and re-use will become increasingly important for water quality protection and sustainable nutrient cycling as environmental regulations become stricter and global P reserves decline. The objective of this study was to examine and characterize several magnesium phosphates recovered from actual wastewater under field conditions. Three types of particles were examined including crystalline magnesium ammonium phosphate hexahydrate (struvite) recovered from dairy wastewater, crystalline magnesium ammonium phosphate hydrate (dittmarite) recovered from a food processing facil

This study aimed to investigate the potential for phosphate recovery, instead of removal, from wastewater at conventional biological treatment processes. In the first part of this study, struvite and apatite phosphate-salts formation potential were investigated using artificially prepared solutions. In the second part, real municipal wastewater was subjected to batch-basis aerobic/anaerobic sequential order operation and supernatant of high phosphate-concentrations released into the liquid medium during the anaerobic phase were withdrawn and subjected to chemical precipitation tests. The forme

The nutritional value of meat meal (MM), chicken meal (CM), and corn gluten meal (CGM) as dietary sources of protein in dry food formulated for adult cats was evaluated. Twelve healthy adult cats (11 males and 1 female) were used. Dry diets containing MM, CM, or CGM as the main protein source were given for a 3-week period in a 3 x 3 Latin-square design. Digestion and balance experiments were conducted during the last 7 d of each period. In addition, freshly voided urine was taken to determine urinary pH and number of struvite crystals. As compared with the CM diet, dry-matter digestibility wa

Phosphorus (P), an essential element for living cells, is present in different soluble and adsorbed chemical forms found in soil, sediment, and water. Most species are generally immobile and easily adsorbed onto soil particles. However, P is a major concern owing to its serious environmental effects (e.g., eutrophication, scale formation) when found in excess in natural or engineered environments. Commercial chemicals, fertilizers, sewage effluent, animal manure, and agricultural waste are the major sources of P pollution. But there is limited P resources worldwide. Therefore, the fate, effect

The analysis of long-term results of complex surgical correction of urinary bladder extrophy in 83 patients has shown that 21 (25.3%) patients had concrements in the urethra. Multiple bacteriological tests detected urease-producing flora which was managed with specific antibacterial therapy. Two patients were exposed to extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy. Low-invasive lithotripsy was low effective and all the patients were operated. Chemical structure of the removed concrements was determined with x-ray difractometry. Recurrent concrements were found in 7 (33.3%) of 21 patients who had not

A variable pressure volumetric pump was used for 10% hemiacidrin irrigation of the renal pelvis in 7 renal units (6 patients) with struvite calculi after initial percutaneous debulking and extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL). The pump provided a constant display of intrapelvic infusion pressure, and an alarm which signaled if a preset maximum infusion pressure was exceeded. Compared with standard open manometer monitoring of intrapelvic pressure, this closed system of irrigation eliminates the problems associated with time-consuming assembly and maintenance, irrigant spillage, and sys

Urinary tract diseases are a common concern in domestic cats and a leading cause of veterinary visits. Urolithiasis is a major contributor to discomfort, clinical signs, and secondary complications, negatively impacting feline health and welfare. Diet is a manageable risk factor that can be leveraged in commercial formulations to support urinary tract health and reduce urolith risk, particularly struvite. Nutritional interventions primarily influence three interrelated determinants of urolith formation: urinary pH, urine solute concentrations, and crystallization potential. Controlled dietary

Phosphorus recovery from greenhouse wastewater, using precipitation-crystallization, was conducted under three levels of calcium concentration, 304 mg/L (7.6 mmol/L), 384 mg/L (9.6 mmol/L), and 480 mg/L (12 mmol/L), and also with additions of ammonium and magnesium into the wastewater. Jar test results confirmed high phosphate removal, with more than 90% of the removal achieved with a pH as low as 7.7. Under the low calcium concentration, ammonium addition affected the chemical reactions at pH lower than 8.0, where struvite was produced; when the pH was raised to 8.8, other calcium compounds d

Infection-induced stones in man probably form solely as a consequence of urealysis which is catalyzed by the bacterial protein urease. Urease stones composed of struvite and carbonate-apatite may form primarily, or as secondary stones or pre-existent metabolic stones. Struvite stones form and grow rapidly owing to (a) supersaturation of urine with stone forming salts, (b) 'salting out' of poorly soluble organic substances normally dissolved in urine and (c) ammonia-induced destruction of the normally protective urothelial glycosaminoglycan layer. Immature (predominantly organic) matrix stones

Because dietary ingredients and feeding patterns influence the volume, pH and solute concentration of urine, diet can contribute to the etiology, management or prevention of recurrence of some causes of lower urinary tract disease. Most research assessing the effect of diet has focused on the latter two aspects, primarily because of interest in struvite urolithiasis. Manipulation of urine pH through dietary means has proven an effective tool for the management and prevention of struvite urolithiasis; acidification of urine, however, may be a risk factor for calcium oxalate urolithiasis, which

Phosphorus recovery has drawn much attention during recent years, due to estimated limited available quantities, and to the harmful environmental impact that it may have when freely released into aquatic environments. Struvite precipitation from wastewater or biological sludge is among the preferred approaches applied for phosphorus recovery, as it results in the availability of valuable fertilizer materials. This process is mostly affected by pH and presence of competitive ions in solution. Modeling and optimization of the precipitation process may help understanding the optimal conditions un

Feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) is the most common cause of feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD). This retrospective, case-controlled study evaluated possible risk factors associated with FIC and compared different clinical presentations in 64 cats with FIC. Several risk factors known to be involved in FLUTD were identified as playing a role in FIC. Of the stressful situations considered, most did not occur with increased frequency in cats with FIC compared to controls, except for a house move. The presence of pyuria, haematuria and an increased urine protein:creatinine ratio were signi

The x-ray pictures have principal significance in the clinical estimation of morphology of the skeleton. Roentgenometrical investigations of second metacarpal bone allow to assess the value of PCA (percentage cortical area), which is adequate to the mineral contents of the bone structure. PCA value of 100 equals the density of 2,3 g/cm3. The standard values of PCA and density equivalents were established in a group of 600 healthy children. The study was based on a group of 50 sick children aged from 1 to 16 years. The urolithiasis in all cases was diagnosed and all children were treated in the

Articular cartilage was examined to determine its decomposition sequence and its potential for assessing the postmortem interval. Scanning electron microscopy of articular cartilage from buried porcine trotters showed the presence of microcrystals on the synovial surface. These orthorhombic pyramidal or "coffin"-shaped crystals, appeared at 3 weeks (22 days) after interment and disappeared after 6 weeks. The disappearance of these crystals was linked to decompositional changes to the integrity of the synovial joint. The formation and disappearance of these crystals was associated with a pH cha

Phosphorus is a depleting resource that needs recovery from wastewater streams. The magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) crystallization process could simultaneously recover ammonium nitrogen and phosphorus at equal molar basis to yield slow-release MAP fertilizer. However, the present MAP processes are not efficient in recovering phosphorus at low P concentrations. This work presented and tested the performance of a newly proposed MAP reactor, the internal recycle seeding reactor (IRSR) that comprised of a reaction zone and a settling zone connecting with an internal recirculation loop. This article examines the optimisation of recovery of phosphorus and nitrogen (via struvite) in small treatment units for high strength wastewaters using biologically assisted precipitation. The particular focus was the synergetic effect between removal of orthophosphate and the biological reactions occurring during nitrogen removal. The most sensitive parameter influencing the phosphate solid forms (HAP, MAP) is pH. Sequencing batch mode helps maintain high gradients in ammonia concentration, which encourages struvite precipitation. Nitrification has a key effect on the precipitation, through
