A prospective randomized trial of 40 duodenal ulcer patients is reviewed. The patients had one of four operations (selective vagotomy, proximal gastric vagotomy, selective vagotomy plus pyloroplasty, or proximal gastric vagotomy plus pyloroplasty). The gastric emptying of a hypertonic fluid meal was assessed before and three to four months after operation. Selective vagotomy without a drainage procedure results in gastric retention and should no longer be considered as a method of treatment for duodenal ulcer. 1. ATP sulphurylase was assayed in various organs from vitamin A-deficient and pair-fed control rats at different stages of deficiency. Activity decreased slightly in the liver and markedly in the adrenal gland. Striking differences in liver activity were observed between pair-fed control and ad libitum-fed animals. Catabolism of sulfated mucopolysaccharide by normal human fibroblasts in culture is progressively inhibited as the pH of the growth medium is raised from 6.8 to 8.0. The final cell density increases with the change in pH. The capacity to degrade mucopolysaccharide is rapidly restored by lowering the pH, and this reactivation does not require protein synthesis.
