[Response of phosphorus components in sediments from eutrophic lake to external sulfate].

A six week experiment under indoor simulated condition was carried out to investigate the external sulfate transformation between the sediments and overlying water from Lake Nanhu in Wuhan, China, and the influence of sulfate on the phosphorus components was also studied. The results showed that the sulfate input increased the pH and lowered the Eh in the overlying water. The sulfate concentration in the overlying water decreased with time, and it was assumed that there existed an obvious transformation of sulfate to other forms of sulfur compounds according to the variation of sulfate concent

Light activated antimicrobial agents can inactivate oral malodour causing bacteria.

Oral malodour is a common condition which affects a large proportion of the population, resulting in social, emotional and psychological stress. Certain oral bacteria form a coating called a biofilm on the tongue dorsum and degrade organic compounds releasing volatile sulfur compounds that are malodourous. Current chemical treatments for oral malodour such as mouthwashes containing chlorhexidine or essential oils, are not sufficiently effective at reducing the bacterial load on the tongue. One potential alternative to current chemical treatments for oral malodour is the use of light activated

Bioaugmentation-induced assimilatory sulfate reduction and chain elongation mitigate H2S and CH4 emissions in sewers.

Controlling H2S and CH4 emissions is critical for ensuring the safety of sewer systems. Bioaugmentation offers a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to chemical dosing, yet its performance and mechanisms in sewers remain unclear. This study investigated a bioaugmentation strategy by inoculating laboratory-scale sewer reactors with Bacillus subtilis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. A 7-day inoculation (10⁷ CFU/mL) reduced H2S and CH4 emissions by 86.1% and 62.9%, respectively, with half-recovery times of 12 and 22 days. The strategy extended the duration of effective H2S contro

Non-mercury methylating microbial taxa are integral to understanding links between mercury methylation and elemental cycles in marine and freshwater sediments.

The goal of this study was to explore the role of non-mercury (Hg) methylating taxa in mercury methylation and to identify potential links between elemental cycles and Hg methylation. Statistical approaches were utilized to investigate the microbial community and biochemical functions in relation to methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in marine and freshwater sediments. Sediments were collected from the methylation zone (top 15 cm) in four Hg-contaminated sites. Both abiotic (e.g., sulfate, sulfide, iron, salinity, total organic matter, etc.) and biotic factors (e.g., hgcA, abundances of methy

Assessment of aerobic-anoxic biotrickling filtration for the desulfurization of high-strength H2S streams from sugarcane vinasse fermentation.

The increasing demand for renewable energy has heightened interest in biogas production from agro-industrial residues, such as sugarcane vinasse-a byproduct of ethanol production. During vinasse fermentation, sulfate reduction generates biogas with high hydrogen sulfide (H2S) concentrations, reaching up to 50,000 ppmv. This study assessed the performance of two bench-scale biotrickling filters (BTFs) treating synthetic sulfide-rich acidogenic off-gas (7000 ppmv) from mesophilic sugarcane vinasse fermentation. The systems were packed with materials of high (950 m2 m-3, BTFH) and low (460 m2 m-3

Heme bound to the bacterial transcription factor SqrR/YgaV catalyzes oxygen-dependent conversion of hydrogen sulfide to polysulfide for regulated gene expression.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and polysulfide are critical signaling molecules in bacteria, with distinct roles in regulating oxidative stress and redox balance. This study investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying the sulfur sensing and regulatory functions of two homologous transcription factors, SqrR from Rhodobacter capsulatus and YgaV from Escherichia coli. In vitro thiol-specific labeling and SDS-PAGE analyses demonstrate that apo-SqrR and apo-YgaV respond selectively and sensitively to polysulfides, rather than H2S itself, under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Effects of sulfate reducing bacteria and sulfate concentrations on mercury methylation in freshwater sediments.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is the most poisonous form of mercury (Hg) and it enters the human body primarily through consumption of Hg contaminated fish. Sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) are major producers of MeHg in anoxic sediments. The dsrAB gene was isolated from freshwater fish pond sediments. Sequence analyses showed that the SRB in sediments was mainly composed of Desulfobulbus propionicus and Desulfovibrio vulgaris. The two species of SRB were cultured from freshwater sediments. The addition of inorganic Hg to these freshwater sediments caused an increase in MeHg concentrations at 30 days in

Enhanced carbon-sulfur cycling in the sediments of Arabian Sea oxygen minimum zone center.

Biogeochemistry of oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) sediments, which are characterized by high input of labile organic matter, have crucial bearings on the benthic biota, gas and metal fluxes across the sediment-water interface, and carbon-sulfur cycling. Here we couple pore-fluid chemistry and comprehensive microbial diversity data to reveal the sedimentary carbon-sulfur cycle across a water-depth transect covering the entire thickness of eastern Arabian Sea OMZ, off the west coast of India. Geochemical data show remarkable increase in average total organic carbon content and aerial sulfate reductio

Cysteine Hydropersulfide Inactivates β-Lactam Antibiotics with Formation of Ring-Opened Carbothioic S-Acids in Bacteria.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) formed during sulfur metabolism in bacteria has been implicated in the development of intrinsic resistance to antibacterial agents. Despite the conversion of H2S to hydropersulfides greatly enhancing the biochemical properties of H2S such as antioxidant activity, the effects of hydropersulfides on antibiotic resistance have remained unknown. In this work, we investigated the effects of H2S alone or together with cystine to form cysteine hydropersulfide (CysSSH) on the activities of antibacterial agents. By using the disc diffusion test, we found that CysSSH treatment eff

Microbial Detoxification of Sediments Underpins Persistence of Zostera marina Meadows.

Eelgrass meadows have attracted much attention not only for their ability to maintain marine ecosystems as feeding grounds for marine organisms but also for their potential to store atmospheric and dissolved CO2 as blue carbon. This study comprehensively evaluated the bacterial and chemical data obtained from eelgrass sediments of different scales along the Japanese coast to investigate the effect on the acclimatization of eelgrass. Regardless of the eelgrass habitat, approximately 1% Anaerolineales, Babeliales, Cytophagales, and Phycisphaerales was present in the bottom sediment. Sulfate-redu

Biogenic amorphous FeOOH activated additional intracellular electron flow pathways for accelerating reductive dechlorination of tetrachloroethylene.

Dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria (DIRB) with extracellular electron transfer (EET) capabilities have shown significant potential for bioremediating halogenated hydrocarbon contaminated sites rich in iron and humic substances. However, the role and microbial molecular mechanisms of iron-humic acid (Fe-HA) complexes in the reductive dehalogenation process of DIRB remains inadequately elucidated. In this study, we developed a sustainable carbon cycling approach using Fe-HA complexes to modulate the electron flux from sawdust (SD), enabling almost complete reductive dechlorination by most DIRB

Cupriavidus necator H16 Uses Flavocytochrome c Sulfide Dehydrogenase To Oxidize Self-Produced and Added Sulfide.

Production of sulfide (H2S, HS-, and S2-) by heterotrophic bacteria during aerobic growth is a common phenomenon. Some bacteria with sulfide:quinone oxidoreductase (SQR) and persulfide dioxygenase (PDO) can oxidize self-produced sulfide to sulfite and thiosulfate, but other bacteria without these enzymes release sulfide into the medium, from which H2S can volatilize into the gas phase. Here, we report that Cupriavidus necator H16, with the fccA and fccB genes encoding flavocytochrome c sulfide dehydrogenases (FCSDs), also oxidized self-produced H2S. A mutant in which fccA and fccB were deleted

Adverse effects of methylmercury on gut bacteria and accelerated accumulation of mercury in organs due to disruption of gut microbiota.

Methylmercury (MeHg), an environmental electrophile, binds covalently to the cysteine residues of proteins in organs, altering protein function and causing cytotoxicity. MeHg has also been shown to alter the composition of gut microbes. The gut microbiota is a complex community, the disturbance of which has been linked to the development of certain diseases. However, the relationship between MeHg and gut bacteria remains poorly understood. In this study, we showed that MeHg binds covalently to gut bacterial proteins via cysteine residues. We examined the effects of MeHg on the growth of select

In vitro effect of coffee on oral malodor-related parameters.

In the present investigation we examined the effect of three brands of coffee on microbial volatile sulfur compound (VSC) production using a decarboxylase incubation assay. Stimulated whole saliva was added to decarboxylase medium supplemented with 0.005% hemin. Incubation was carried out anaerobically for 72 h in the presence of powdered coffee at concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 2.0% (w/v), as compared with appropriate controls. VSC levels were determined using OralChroma™ and Halimeter™ and malodor was scored by an experienced odor judge. Experimental biofilm was grown with or without cof

An indirect detection strategy-assisted self-cleaning electrochemical platform for in-situ and pretreatment-free detection of endogenous H2S from sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB).

The endogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2S) can be adopted as an indicator for the indirect detection of sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB), which considered to be closely related to pipeline corrosion and human intestinal health. Unfortunately, the in-situ detection of endogenous H2S from SRB in the complex culture medium still faces huge challenges. Besides nonspecific adsorption from the culture medium of SRB, the problem of electrode passivation by produced elemental sulfur during electrochemical detection processes of H2S cannot be ignored. To address these challenges, herein a synergistic sensin

Long-Term Paddy Soil Development Buffers the Increase in Arsenic Methylation and Thiolation after Sulfate Fertilization.

Sulfate fertilization has been proposed to limit arsenic (As) mobility in paddy soils and accumulation in rice grains. However, As and sulfur (S) have complex biogeochemical interactions. Besides the desired precipitation of sulfides that sorb or incorporate As, S can enhance As biotic methylation and abiotic thiolation. Incubating 50- to 2000-year-old paddy soil chronosequence samples without and with S-addition showed the highest relative increases in the formation of low-sorbing, phytotoxic methylated oxyarsenates, and low-sorbing, cyto-, and phytotoxic thioarsenates in the youngest soil. Rhodaneses minimize the accumulation of cellular sulfane sulfur to avoid disulfide stress during sulfide oxidation in bacteria.

Heterotrophic bacteria and human mitochondria often use sulfide: quinone oxidoreductase (SQR) and persulfide dioxygenase (PDO) to oxidize sulfide to sulfite and thiosulfate. Bioinformatic analysis showed that the genes encoding RHOD domains were widely presented in annotated sqr-pdo operons and grouped into three types: fused with an SQR domain, fused with a PDO domain, and dissociated proteins. Biochemical evidence suggests that RHODs facilitate the formation of thiosulfate and promote the reaction between inorganic polysulfide and glutathione to produce glutathione polysulfide. However, the

Two cysteine dioxygenase homologs contribute to the fitness and virulence of a human pathogen.

Bordetella pertussis is a strictly human, re-emerging respiratory pathogen and the causative agent of whooping cough. Through its adaptation to humans, B. pertussis decayed or lost genes of the sulfate assimilation pathway and, consequently, must obtain cysteine from the host. Previously, we showed that the sulfur metabolism of B. pertussis is substantially rewired during infection of human macrophages. Here, we investigated the role of several cysteine metabolism- and transport-related genes in the fitness and virulence of this pathogen. We show that excess cysteine strongly induces the expre

Bacterial Tolerance and Bioleaching in the Presence of Chloride.

Chloride ions can enhance the bioleaching of copper minerals, yet most biomining microorganisms are highly sensitive to chloride and cannot survive or colonize mineral surfaces in saline environments. Chloride tolerance varies among acidophilic iron-oxidizing bacteria, but the concentrations at which they remain active are generally too low to permit the industrial use of seawater. Therefore, identifying highly chloride-tolerant leaching microorganisms and studying their bioleaching potential in chloride-containing systems is of utmost importance. This study investigated chloride tolerance and
