Sunburn frequency and risk and protective factors: a cross-sectional survey.

Skin cancer prevention is at the forefront of public health as morbidity increases. Limited data exists on effective interventions to reduce sunburn frequency and modifiable risk factors. This research aims to determine an association between 1) demographic characteristics and outdoor sunburn frequency, and 2) sunburn frequency and sun-related risk and protective factors in a nationally representative, cross-sectional household survey. Of 23,430 surveys sent, 4,883 respondents reported sunburn-related data. Association between sunburns and demographic, risk, and protective factors were examine…

Sunburn Prevalence is Underestimated in UK-Based People of African Ancestry.

BACKGROUND: Eumelanin, the primary pigment in human epidermis, has a well-established photo-protective role. It can confer a protection factor of up to approximately 13.4 in some individuals. However, the protection eumelanin affords is not absolute and, further, the susceptibility of human skin to the harmful effects of UV radiation is more complex than skin pigmentation alone. OBJECTIVE: Our survey explored the lifetime prevalence of sunburn in people of African Ancestry based in the UK (Black African or Black Caribbean). RESULTS: A significant number of respondents, 52.2% (n=222), reporte…

Vitamin D improves sunburns by increasing autophagy in M2 macrophages.

Cutaneous inflammation from UV radiation exposure causes epidermal damage, cellular infiltration, and secretion of pro-inflammatory mediators that exacerbate tissue destruction. Recovery is mediated chiefly by anti-inflammatory M2 macrophages that suppress inflammation and augment epidermal regeneration. Vitamin D enables anti-inflammation to promote tissue repair in response to injury. Since vitamin D enhances cellular macroautophagy/autophagy, we investigated the role of autophagy in vitamin D protection of UV-mediated sunburn and inflammation. Using a UV-mediated acute skin injury mouse mod…

Prevalence and trends of sunscreen use and sunburn among Norwegian women.

BACKGROUND: Sunscreen is recommended to prevent sunburn and skin cancer. OBJECTIVES: To investigate sunscreen use in relation to demographic and phenotypic characteristics among women in Norway, as well as solar UV exposure, sunburn experience in different decades of life, and temporal trends in sunscreen use. METHODS: We used data from the Norwegian Women and Cancer Study, a large population-based prospective cohort study. Log-binomial regression was used to estimate the association between sunscreen use and personal characteristics. Results are presented as prevalence ratios (PRs) and 99% …

The circadian clock controls sunburn apoptosis and erythema in mouse skin.

Epidemiological studies of humans and experimental studies with mouse models suggest that sunburn resulting from exposure to excessive UV light and damage to DNA confers an increased risk for melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. Previous reports have shown that both nucleotide excision repair, which is the sole pathway in humans for removing UV photoproducts, and DNA replication are regulated by the circadian clock in mouse skin. Furthermore, the timing of UV exposure during the circadian cycle has been shown to affect skin carcinogenesis in mice. Because sunburn and skin cancer are causally…

Sunburn in Australian men with a history of non-melanoma skin cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To identify predictors of recent sunburn in north Australian men with a history of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). METHODS: A survey of men with previous NMSC was conducted (n = 300, response rate 62%). RESULTS: Fifty-four percent of participants reported recent sunburn. Predictors identified included younger age, belief that NMSC is caused by childhood sun exposure, belief that sun protection will not help prevent further NMSC, wearing of casual clothes, and use of shade as the main sun-protection strategy. CONCLUSION: Health promotion messages should emphasize the importance o…

Tanning and sunburn: knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of people in Great Britain.

BACKGROUND: A representative sample of the British population was interviewed to identify the factors associated with sunburn and intention to tan, and the source from which people obtained their information about the risks of sun exposure. METHODS: As part of its rolling Omnibus survey, the Office for National Statistics interviewed a randomly selected representative sample of 1858 adults (aged 16 or over) in Great Britain in October 1996. The analysis and interpretation of the resulting data form the basis of this study. RESULTS: The response rate was just below 70 per cent. Forty-three pe…

Photoprotective effects of sunscreens in cosmetics on sunburn and Langerhans cell photodamage.

It has become common practice to add sunscreening agents of variable potency to cosmetics to protect against the adverse effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure. The purpose of this study was to determine whether cosmetic preparations containing sunscreening agents protected against the adverse effects of acute UV radiation exposure and, if so, to identify the components responsible for the photoprotective effects. Pretreatment of skin with one such cosmetic product provided complete protection against UV-induced erythema, sunburn cell formation and Langerhans cell damage in volunteers,…

Effect of glutathione depletion on sunburn cell formation in the hairless mouse.

Cutaneous protection against ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation damage by endogenous glutathione (GSH) was evaluated in the epidermis of the hairless mouse by measuring the influence of GSH depletion on sunburn cell (SBC) formation. Cellular GSH exerts antioxidant effects and recent studies have suggested a role for oxygen radicals in the production of SBC. Hairless mice (Skh/h 1) received oral treatment with buthionine S,R-sulfoximine (BSO), an irreversible inhibitor of gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase, to deplete cutaneous GSH; 4 d later their ears were exposed to UVB radiation. BSO treatment si…

The temperature sensitivity of the Robertson-Berger sunburn meter, model 500.

The temperature dependency of the response of the Robertson-Berger sunburn detector was tested. Exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) at 254, 302 and 315 nm resulted in temperature coefficients of -6.8%, +4.3% and +14.6% per 10 degrees C respectively. Scans of the spectral response curve showed a redshift with increasing temperatures in accordance with measurements of the temperature response at solar exposure. The temperature dependency during solar exposure was calculated as S(T) = (0.831 +/- 0.060) 10(-2)T + (0.694 +/- 0.004), relative to a detector kept at a constant temperature, 32 degr…

Prevalence and Context of Sunburn Among U.S. Adults - United States, 2024.

Sunburn is an important risk factor for skin cancer. Understanding sunburn prevalence and the contexts in which sunburn commonly occurs might help guide the development and implementation of sun safety interventions. Data from the 2024 National Health Interview Survey sample adult questionnaire were analyzed to describe the prevalence of one or more and four or more sunburns among U.S. adults during the previous 12 months and the percentages of U.S. adults who experienced their most recent sunburn while they were working at their job; intentionally tanning; exercising; spending time in, on, or…

CK1α ablation in keratinocytes induces p53-dependent, sunburn-protective skin hyperpigmentation.

Casein kinase 1α (CK1α), a component of the β-catenin destruction complex, is a critical regulator of Wnt signaling; its ablation induces bo … igmentation, which is in contrast to the mechanism of p53-dependent UV tanning. Nevertheless, acute sunburn effects were successfully prevented in the hyperpigmented skin of SKO mice. CK1α inhibition induces skin-protective eumelanin but no carcinogenic pheomelanin and may therefore constitute an effective strategy for safely increasing eumelanin via UV-i …

Sunburn among active component service members, U.S. Armed Forces, 2002-2013.

Sunburn is caused by acute overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation directly from the sun or from artificial UV sources. Service members are at risk of excessive exposure to sunlight due to the nature of their military duties, which often involve working and training outdoors, and deployment to environments where UV radiation is more intense. From January 2002 through December 2013, a total of 19,172 incident cases of clinically significant sunburn were diagnosed among active component service members. Most of the cases (80.2%) were first degree sunburn. The incidence rates of sunburn diagno…
