Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is the most common chronic heart valve disease, leading to left-sided cardiomegaly in dogs. The leaflet-annulus index (LAI) was originally used in humans as a predictor of mitral regurgitation (MR) after mitral valve repair surgery. This index represents the quantity and severity of MR since it is affected by annular dilation. Recently, LAI was adapted to veterinary medicine, and its usefulness as an indicator of annular dilation on 2D transthoracic echocardiography in MMVD dogs was suggested. For this study, 135 Maltese dogs were selected and divided int

Osteomyelitis is a challenging infectious disease affecting humans and animals. It is difficult to diagnose because, in many cases, symptoms are non-specific and, for example in implant-related cases, can appear long time after surgery. In addition to this, it is also difficult to treat due to the need to find the appropriate antibiotic regime and delivery system to reach the site of infection and to avoid development of bacterial resistance. The central purpose of this review is to compare the microbiological aspects of osteomyelitis in human and veterinary medicine, with the aim of improving

Electrochemotherapy is a local ablative therapy that increases the cytotoxicity of either bleomycin or cisplatin by applying electric pulses (electroporation) to tumors. It has already been widely used throughout Europe for the treatment of various types of human and veterinary cutaneous tumors, with an objective response rate ranging from 70%-90%, depending on the tumor histotype. Recently, electrochemotherapy was introduced for the treatment of primary liver tumors, such as hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The complete response rate was 85% per treated lesion, with a durable response. Therefo

Surgical intervention on cetaceans is rarely performed due to challenges including general anesthesia and post-operative wound healing. This report describes the evaluation and treatment of an adult female bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) with the US Navy Marine Mammal Program, with a chronic ventral cervical abscess caused by Candida glabrata. Despite aspiration and lavage along with multiple antifungal drugs, the patient developed inspiratory stridor with decreased performance level and surgical treatment was pursued. Under general anesthesia with the dolphin in dorsal recumbency posi

The topic of surgical sterilization in companion animals is evolving. Although early spay and neuter has been advocated to prevent overpopulation of unwanted pets, recent research has focused on the timing of gonadectomy in relation to risk of various neoplasms, orthopedic conditions, and miscellaneous conditions. Many of these studies are breed-specific or draw from large veterinary medical databases, making it difficult to guide recommendations on the timing of sterilization across various breeds and mixed-breeds. This article attempts to synthesize the data and help guide decision making on

A six-year-old, female, neutered, whippet was presented for evaluation of a severe, sudden-onset right pelvic limb lameness. The extensor mechanism of the right stifle was intact and there was periarticular swelling in the right stifle. Radiography showed a fracture of the distal pole of the patella. The distal fragment was approximately 25% of the patellar length and the fracture was deemed non-reconstructable. Fracture fragment removal was performed arthroscopically, which led to an excellent clinical outcome. The owner considered the dog to be exercising normally at the seven-month postoper

A 18-month-old female Bernese Mountain Dog with chronic pain at jumping, extension of the right hind leg and paresis of the tail was referred to the Neurological Service of the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Zurich. Upon radiological examination a mineralised fragment at the dorsal aspect of the endplate of S1 was detected. The diagnosis of Osteochondrosis dissecans was confirmed by linear and computed tomography as well as histologic examination of the fragment, which was surgically removed. Preoperative imaging allowed a minimal surgical approach using a unilateral, modified dorsal

Current standards of care in veterinary medicine dictate an adequate level of pain control for our patients. Effective pain control uses a proactive, multimode approach that starts with preoperative medications, includes the anesthetic protocol selected, and continues into the postoperative period. A basic understanding of the physiology of pain assists in selecting those agents and modalities best suited for individual patients. Analgesic drug selection and local anesthesia are both integral parts of pain control when performing surgery in the oral cavity. Local (regional) anesthesia plays an

The occurrence of laryngeal paralysis following endotracheal intubation in dogs is rare. A one-year-old canine was presented with aspiration pneumonia in the postoperative period following general anesthesia for acetabular denervation surgery. After a month of treatment for aspiration pneumonia, the patient had inspiratory stridor and dyspnea, and the diagnosis of unilateral laryngeal paralysis was made through laryngoscopy. Along with the benefits of endotracheal intubation come many risks. Laryngeal paralysis can be a serious complication, predisposing the patient to aspiration. This report

Osteomyelitis often involves Staphylococcus spp. as the isolated genus in domestic animal cases. Implant-related infections, frequently associated with biofilm-forming microorganisms like staphylococci species, necessitate careful material selection. This study assessed biofilm formation by Staphylococcus pseudintermedius on titanium nuts used in veterinary orthopaedic surgery. Biofilm quantification employed safranin staining and spectrophotometric measurement, while bacterial counts were determined in colony-forming units (CFU). Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) evaluated the biofilm morpho

AIMS: To determine the association between the presence of pet health insurance and the risk of euthanasia at the time of diagnosis for dogs with gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV).
METHODS: Insurance status at the time of GDV diagnosis was sought for a cohort of 147 non-referred, confirmed cases of GDV that presented to the emergency department of a university-based veterinary hospital in Australia between 2008 and 2017. Insurance status was obtained from the medical record (n=18) or after contacting the owners by phone using a standardised questionnaire (n=129). Animal, clinical and outcome

Linguoversion of deciduous mandibular canine teeth can be a painful condition, interferes with the development and growth of the jaws, and potentially leads to further malocclusions affecting permanent dentition. Extraction of linguoverted deciduous mandibular canines is considered an interceptive orthodontic procedure that would allow unimpeded development of the jaws and permanent teeth. This study assessed clinical records of 124 dogs that had linguoverted deciduous mandibular canine teeth surgically extracted between October 2010 and September 2019 in a veterinary dental referral clinic. A 9-year-old neutered male Miniature Pinscher dog was presented with anorexia and lethargy. Acute pancreatitis was diagnosed based on laboratory and imaging studies. Follow-up ultrasonography revealed peripancreatic and pericolonic lesions, colonic luminal narrowing, and ileus. Computed tomography revealed pancreatic necrosis with an inflammatory mass, colonic wall thickening, luminal narrowing, and proximal intestinal obstruction. Surgery and histopathology confirmed peripancreatic abscesses, inflammation, and fibrosis that led to mechanical obstruction. This is the first report demonstrating

OBJECTIVE: Thymoma-associated paraneoplastic syndromes in dogs and cats include myasthenia gravis, hypercalcemia, exfoliative dermatitis, erythema multiforme, T-cell lymphocytosis, myocarditis, anemia, and polymyositis. Paraneoplastic myasthenia gravis (MG) is the most commonly reported paraneoplastic syndrome in dogs with thymic epithelial tumors. The objective of this study was to examine cases of canine thymic-associated MG treated surgically, with the specific objective of providing an updated clinical picture of the preoperative management, postoperative complications, and outcomes of the

A 12-year-old Maltese dog was referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Konkuk University because of severe regurgitation. Radiography, ultrasonography, and computed tomography showed a mass in the thoracic esophagus. Localization of the tumor, its extraluminal nature, the positioning and involvement of the stomach, and the lack of diffuse metastasis to the lung were factors considered when developing a surgical plan. A successful surgical procedure was performed. The final diagnosis was leiomyosarcoma. Following surgery, clinical signs were significantly reduced and postoperative compli

Three cases of gallbladder agenesis (GA) have been previously reported in the English-speaking veterinary literature. Affected dogs can be either asymptomatic or symptomatic with vomiting, retching, and anorexia previously reported. The previously reported cases and the dog in this report had marked elevations in alanine aminotransferase concentrations, and liver histopathology consistently showed bridging fibrosis and biliary hyperplasia. The condition is most often diagnosed in humans during exploratory surgery, which was also the case in the previous three dogs reported with GA. Computed to

BACKGROUND: Timing of spay-neuter surgery in heartworm-positive dogs has been a concern, primarily due to perceived risk of anesthetic complications secondary to cardiovascular compromise. In shelter settings, timing of spay-neuter surgery impacts length of stay and ultimate chance of adoption for heartworm-positive dogs, yet up to 13% of animal shelters may delay spay-neuter procedures until after adulticidal therapy.
METHODS: This retrospective review of medical records describes clinical and anesthetic monitoring parameters of heartworm-positive dogs presented for elective spay-neuter surg
