The authors present seven cases of surgical drape left in body cavities during surgical operations. The most common symptoms reported by these patients are analysed and the consequences of leaving a foreign body in the abdominal cavity are summarised. In the majority of cases, the time elapsed from the operation to the detection of the foreign body was an average of 17 months. In one case, the foreign body remained in the abdomen for 7 years. The most common symptom reported by patients was abdominal pain. Some patients also developed wound healing disorders with leakage of pus from the wound,

An estimated 1 million North Americans live with ostomies, with up to 80% of ostomy patients developing stoma-related skin morbidities. While ostomy nurses are often the first line of management, dermatologists may be involved in the care of ostomy patients with complex or persistent peristomal skin complications. Therefore, an understanding of the ostomy apparatus and possible peristomal skin conditions that may arise allows dermatologists to identify skin complications early and work effectively with a multidisciplinary team. In this article, we aim to review the ostomy apparatus, discuss th

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review was to identify and map the evidence for oral dietary management of ileostomies.
INTRODUCTION: Dietary advice is commonly provided for ileostomy management but can be inconsistent, conflicting, and inadequate. There is a lack of high-quality research investigating dietary management of ileostomies. This scoping review highlights gaps in the literature that need addressing to inform practice, and identifies dietary strategies and outcomes to be investigated in future studies.
INCLUSION CRITERIA: Evidence relating to the use of oral dietary strategies to

UNLABELLED: There are few reports on laparoscopic stoma creation; we report here our experience with laparoscopic stoma creation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seven patients who underwent laparoscopic stoma creation between April 2019 and December 2019 were studied and their clinical outcome was evaluated retrospectively. Operation approach: We performed a colostomy in the transverse colon. At first, we insert a 12 mm first port into the site of stoma marking. And more, we insert three 5 mm ports on the opposite side of the first port. We remove the adhesions of the intestinal tract and create a col

AIM: Preoperative factors predictive of permanent stoma creation were investigated in a long-term follow-up of patients with mid or low rectal cancer.
METHOD: We included patients who underwent radical resection for mid or low rectal cancer with available data for preoperative anal function measured by manometry and Faecal Incontinence Severity Index questionnaire between January 2005 and December 2015 in three tertiary referral hospitals. A permanent stoma was defined as a stoma present until the patient's last follow-up visit or death. Preoperative factors that predicted permanent stoma cre

The Malone appendicostomy is a novel option for surgical management of faecal incontinence and chronic constipation, by permitting the administration of antegrade colonic enemas for colonic evacuation. We report the case of a 54-year-old female who had undergone abdomino perineal resection for low rectal cancer followed by total perineal reconstruction with perineal colostomy, dynamic double graciloplasty and Malone appendicostomy. After 7-year follow-up, functional results and quality of life scores were satisfactory. Suddenly the patient described increasing difficulty with intubation of her

Silo pouch formation is a standard procedure to prevent compartment syndrome in gastroschisis. Intestinal complications such as perforation and volvulus can occur and their management can be perplexing. We present three such patients in which we formed a stoma through the silo pouch owing to these complications. Creation of stoma through the silo is a novel, safe temporizing technique to decompress the bowel while delayed reduction continues. Subsequently, when the baby and the bowel improve, the stoma can be closed.

BACKGROUND: A parastomal hernia is defined as an incisional hernia related to a stoma, and belongs to the most common stoma-related complications. Many factors, which are considered to influence the incidence of parastomal herniation, have been investigated. However, it remains unclear whether the enterostomy should be placed through, or lateral to the rectus abdominis muscle, in order to prevent parastomal herniation and other important stoma complications.
OBJECTIVES: To assess if there is a difference regarding the incidence of parastomal herniation and other stoma complications, such as i

Functional constipation is one of the most common gastrointestinal disorders. In both children and adults, most patients are managed conservatively with good results. In this review, we focus on the surgical approach to constipation. Patients who lack the capacity to consistently have voluntary bowel movements may need mechanical emptying of the colon through an enema program; for them, surgery to allow for antegrade enemas, (via the appendix or using a button device) is useful. Those patients with severe constipation not responsive to intense medical treatment may be candidates for other surg

BACKGROUND: Intra-abdominal and pelvic abscesses are common and result from various illnesses. Percutaneous drainage applies limitedly to well-localized abscesses with appropriate density while surgical drainage usually causes significant physiological disturbance. We herein illustrated an innovative choice "sump drainage with trocar puncture" for the management of intra-abdominal abscesses and compare it with conventional percutaneous and surgical drainage in terms of clinical outcomes and prognosis.
METHODS: Medical records of a total of 75 patients with abscesses were retrospectively retri

A 79-year-old man underwent sigmoid colostomy about 50 years previously and sought surgical reconstruction of the colostomy. He presented with 30 cm of prolapsed stoma accompanying an intrastomal hernia which contained ileum. The prolapsed stoma which led to the intrastomal hernia was made from the distal sigmoid colon, and the everted colon wall constituted the hernia sac. A computed tomography scan was useful to demonstrate the contents of the intrastomal hernia. Reconstruction with relocation of the colostomy was considered appropriate for the presented patient. The thickened and stretched

A 78-year-old man had undergone abdominoperineal resection for rectal cancer in 2003. After 7 years, he visited our hospital with complaints of turbid discharge from the stoma. A tumor 11 cm in diameter was shown at the site of the stoma. A partial resected biopsy revealed moderately-differentiated adenocarcinoma. We diagnosed metachronous multiple carcinoma or recurrent cancer at the colostomy site. After loop colostomy of the ascending colon was performed, systemic chemotherapy with mFOLFOX6 was performed. After 5 courses, the tumor revealed a significant reduction in its size. Afterwards, t

INTRODUCTION: Contrast enemas are often made prior to stoma reversal in order to detect distal intestinal strictures distal of the stoma. If untreated these strictures can cause obstruction which might necessitate redo-surgery. However, the value of contrast enemas is unclear. Therefore, we aim to evaluate the contrast enema's diagnostic accuracy in detecting strictures in children with a stoma.
METHODS: Young children (≤3 years) treated with a stoma between 1998 and 2018 were retrospectively included. The STARD criteria were followed. Patients treated for anorectal malformations and those th

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic approach is now a widespread technique used worldwide, but there are few recent studies on risk factors for parastomal hernia. Therefore, this study was performed to analyze the incidence of parastomal hernia in laparoscopic and open surgery in which a loop stoma was created and was intended to be temporary, and to determine risk factors for parastomal hernia formation. Associations between parastomal hernia and other stoma-related complications were also analyzed.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patient and surgical characteristics was performed in 153 consecuti

INTRODUCTION: One of the most common late complications following stoma construction is prolapse. Although the majority of prolapse can be managed conservatively, surgical revision is required with incarceration/strangulation and in certain cases laparotomy and/or stoma reversal are not appropriate. This report will inform surgeons on safe and effective approaches to revising prolapsed stomas using local techniques.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 58 year old female with an obstructing rectal cancer previously received a diverting transverse loop colostomy. On completion of neoadjuvant treatment, re-

The distance between the anal verge and lower edge of rectal cancer is one of the most important factors affecting the feasibility of sphincter-preserving resection. The aim of the study was to assess the risk of permanent stoma after resection of rectal tumour depending on the distance between the tumour and the anal verge.Material and methods. The retrospective analysis covered 884 patients after resection of rectal cancer. The distance between the anal verge and the lowest edge of the tumour was measured during endoscopic examination. Surgical technique was similar in all cases. For statisti

Chronic obstructive hydrocephalus is known to cause ventricular diverticula and, rarely, spontaneous ventriculostomy. The authors present the case of a patient in whom a spontaneous third ventriculostomy was identified with long-standing hydrocephalus secondary to aqueductal stenosis. To their knowledge, this is the first report in which a spontaneous stoma in the floor of the third ventricle was evaluated using endoscopy and cerebrospinal fluid dynamics studies. Both studies confirmed that the spontaneous stoma is similar in structure and function to surgical third ventriculostomy.
