Teaching skills through the enhancement of natural antecedents.

The manipulation of the natural antecedents of a task offers a potentially valuable alternative to teaching strategies requiring the presentation of additional prompting stimuli, particularly in work with individuals with severe learning difficulties. The utility of procedures involving the enhancement of natural antecedents has frequently been demonstrated, but this has generally been with respect to tasks of limited ecological validity. This study reports an attempt to teach coat-buttoning skills to two women with severe learning difficulties using an antecedent enhancement procedure. Manipu

General practice trainees' understanding of post-sexual assault care: the impact of a specialist educational intervention.

BACKGROUND: Sexual assault (SA) is a highly prevalent issue, with significant adverse health sequelae. Given that general practitioners (GPs) may serve as the first point of contact for many SA victims, their awareness of post-SA care and appropriate understanding of referral pathways to a sexual assault treatment unit (SATU) are critically important. This study evaluated GP trainees' knowledge of and comfort with post-SA care. METHODS: Educational intervention study using a didactic teaching session was delivered by a specialist forensic examiner on post-SA care. A pre and post-study questio

Twenty-year trends in the utilization of Heller myotomy for achalasia in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Trends in the utilization of Heller myotomy for achalasia in the U.S. over time have not been previously described. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database, we analyzed patients undergoing Heller myotomy for achalasia over a 20-year period (1992-2011) to estimate rates of Heller myotomy, locations where the procedures were performed (rural, urban or teaching) and changes in technique (laparoscopic vs open) as well as outcomes of length of stay and in-hospital mortality. RESULTS: Over the last 20 years, the total number of Heller myotomies per

SIGUEME: Technology-based intervention for low-functioning autism to train skills to work with visual signifiers and concepts.

BACKGROUND: People with low-functioning ASD and other disabilities often find it difficult to understand the symbols traditionally used in educational materials during the learning process. Technology-based interventions are becoming increasingly common, helping children with cognitive disabilities to perform academic tasks and improve their abilities and knowledge. Such children often find it difficult to perform certain tasks contained in educational materials since they lack necessary skills such as abstract reasoning. In order to help these children, the authors designed and created SIGUEM

Dental sleep medicine education among undergraduate dental students in France.

INTRODUCTION: Dental sleep medicine (DSM) is an emerging discipline that studies the oral and maxillofacial causes and consequences of sleep-related problems. DSM is of upmost importance given the major medical challenge it represents. Therefore, to verify whether the future generation of dentists would be ready to face this challenge, the main objective of this study was to assess the degree of involvement of the French dental schools in teaching DSM at the undergraduate level. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All 16 dental schools in France were asked to participate in the study by answering to an on

It takes a village: Supporting professional identity formation in Canadian pharmacy schools' curricula.

PURPOSE: Canadian accreditation standards require pharmacy curricula to support professional identity formation (PIF)-the transformative process of becoming a pharmacist. A thorough understanding of pharmacy schools' approaches to teaching PIF is not well understood, and guidance for educators for curricular development is limited. Study objectives were to describe current PIF teaching and learning approaches, and to outline future plans to incorporate PIF into Canadian pharmacy curricula. METHODS: From May to September 2024, online, semi-structured focus groups were conducted with 51 faculty

The Olin EILOBI Breathing Techniques: Description and Initial Case Series of Novel Respiratory Retraining Strategies for Athletes with Exercise-Induced Laryngeal Obstruction.

INTRODUCTION: Exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO), the condition previously known as paradoxical vocal fold motion and vocal cord dysfunction, is characterized by inappropriate glottic or supraglottic obstruction during high-intensity exercise, causing exertional dyspnea, frequently with stridor. EILO is definitively diagnosed through upper-airway visualization during a characteristic episode. Although respiratory retraining is a primary therapy for EILO, many patients report symptom persistence despite adequate performance of traditional techniques. This report describes three novel

Screening of voice disorders concerning anatomy teachers who use formaldehyde cadaveric parts in laboratory classes.

Voice disorders are common among teachers and, in particular, anatomy teachers are exposed to a potential enemy for dysphonia, irritating chemicals, that is, formaldehyde. We seek to verify the association between: (1) teaching time, (2) type of cadaveric conservation to which the teacher is exposed and (3) hours of exposure to cadaveric preservative related to the different categories of voice disorders screening (ITDV). The sample consisted of 111 teachers who answered to 02 data collection instruments: I - Sociodemographic Data; II - ITDV. Among participating teachers there were 71 male and

A Course Design for Remote Teaching Advanced Topics in Neuroscience.

The COVID-19 pandemic pushed educators to engage in remote teaching out of necessity, but as our relationship with teaching technology grows, remote teaching has emerged as a suitable substitute for in-person education. In this manuscript, we detail a course design for remote teaching advanced topics in neuroscience at the undergraduate level. The course and its different features were designed to fulfill a set of learning goals that closely align with those put forth by the Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience (FUN) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Further

A blended approach to developing psychomotor skills in novice learners in a doctor of physical therapy curriculum.

PURPOSE: Psychomotor skill performance is central to effective clinical practice across health professions. These complex skills are challenging to teach, particularly in the novice learner. As many health professions programs have increased blended course offerings, educators must establish best practices for teaching psychomotor skills in this evolving learning environment. The purpose of this paper is to describe the innovative application of an evidence-based framework to teaching psychomotor skills to novice learners in a blended learning environment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a modif
