Quercetin in Tartary Buckwheat Induces Autophagy against Protein Aggregations.

Tartary buckwheat is used as an ingredient in flour and tea, as well as in traditional Chinese medicine for its antioxidant effects. Here, we found that an ethanol extract of tartary buckwheat (TBE) potently induced autophagy flux in HeLa cells by suppressing mTORC1 activity, as revealed by dephosphorylation of the mTORC1 substrates Ulk1, S6K, and 4EBP, as well as by the nuclear translocation of transcriptional factor EB. In addition to non-selective bulk autophagy, TBE also induced aggrephagy, which is defined as autophagy against aggregated proteins. Quercetin is a flavonol found at high lev

In vitro anti-diabetic activity and chemical characterization of an apolar fraction of Morus alba leaf water extract.

The tea from the white mulberry (Morus alba L.) leaf is a worldwide known traditional medicine of type II diabetes. Here, we report the investigation of the dichloromethane-soluble fraction obtained in a 0.24% m/m yield from the hot water extract of mulberry leaves. A significant, dose-dependent activity was found by means of the 24-h glucose consumption of fully differentiated adipocytes both in the absence and presence of insulin. The fraction was characterized by HPLC-DAD, GC-MS and GC-FID. The main constituent (40.3% by means of GC-FID) was isolated and identified as loliolide by EIMS, HRE

Adverse and beneficial effects of plant extracts on skin and skin disorders.

Plants are of relevance to dermatology for both their adverse and beneficial effects on skin and skin disorders respectively. Virtually all cultures worldwide have relied historically, or continue to rely on medicinal plants for primary health care. Approximately one-third of all traditional medicines are for treatment of wounds or skin disorders, compared to only 1-3% of modern drugs. The use of such medicinal plant extracts for the treatment of skin disorders arguably has been based largely on historical/anecdotal evidence, since there has been relatively little data available in the scienti

Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate (EGCG): New Therapeutic Perspectives for Neuroprotection, Aging, and Neuroinflammation for the Modern Age.

Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases are the two most common forms of neurodegenerative diseases. The exact etiology of these disorders is not well known; however, environmental, molecular, and genetic influences play a major role in the pathogenesis of these diseases. Using Alzheimer's disease (AD) as the archetype, the pathological findings include the aggregation of Amyloid Beta (Aβ) peptides, mitochondrial dysfunction, synaptic degradation caused by inflammation, elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS), and cerebrovascular dysregulation. This review highlights the neuroinflammatory and neur

Standardization of Kaempferia galanga L. rhizome and vasorelaxation effect of its key metabolite ethyl p-methoxycinnamate.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Kaempferia galanga L. rhizome (KGR) is part of more than sixty-one Ayurvedic formulations and commonly known as 'Chandramula'. KGR is widely used in traditional Indian medicines to treat fever (jwar), rheumatism (Amavata), respiratory (Shwasa), hypertension (Vyanabala vaishamya) and cardiovascular disorders (Vyanavayu Dushtijanya Hrudrog). Although ethnomedicinal properties have extensively been demonstrated in traditional medicines of south-east countries i.e. China, India, Indonesia, and Malaysia, the chemico-biological validation are still lacking. Combined ethanolic extracts of Camellia sinensis and Curcuma longa exhibit ovicidal and anthelmintic activities against Fasciola gigantica under in vitro conditions.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Fasciolosis caused by Fasciola gigantica remains a major parasitic disease affecting ruminant livestock, leading to substantial economic losses through decreased productivity, liver condemnation, and mortality, while also posing a zoonotic threat. The prolonged and indiscriminate use of synthetic anthelmintics has contributed to the emergence of drug-resistant parasite populations, emphasizing the urgent need for alternative and sustainable control strategies. Medicinal plants rich in bioactive phytochemicals have gained attention as potential natural anthelmintic agents. G

Paper-Based Device for Phenolic Content Determination in Tea Extracts.

INTRODUCTION: Phenolic compounds garner interest in developing medicines, nutraceuticals, and cosmeceuticals based on natural products. The quantity of phenolic compounds in a sample is commonly determined via spectrophotometry; however, this instrumented technique is relatively laborious and time consuming and requires a large amount of reagents. OBJECTIVE: This work aimed to develop a simple, point-of-need colorimetric sensor to rapidly determine total phenolic content (TPC) in tea extracts. METHODOLOGY: We developed a radial paper-based analytical device (PAD) for TPC determination based

Exploring Senolytic and Senomorphic Properties of Medicinal Plants for Anti-Aging Therapies.

Senolytic and senomorphic therapies have gained more and more attention in the last decade. This kind of therapy is based on the killing of cellular senescent cells without harming the "normal" cells. Aging is not a disease. Clinical studies on healthy people will be difficult to conduct. Therefore, one possibility is to draw on the large repertoire of medicinal plants and use their senolytic properties to provide mild anti-aging therapies. Chamomile, goldenrod, reishi, and green tea were tested for their ability to trigger senolysis. Quercetin was used as control substance. Cellular senescenc

Cytotoxic activity of secondary metabolites derived from Artemisia annua L. towards cancer cells in comparison to its designated active constituent artemisinin.

Artemisia annua L. (sweet wormwood, qinhao) has traditionally been used in Chinese medicine. The isolation of artemisinin from Artemisia annua and its worldwide accepted application in malaria therapy is one of the showcase success stories of phytomedicine during the past decades. Artemisinin-type compounds are also active towards other protozoal or viral diseases as well as cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. Nowadays, Artemisia annua tea is used as a self-reliant treatment in developing countries. The unsupervised use of Artemisia annua tea has been criticized to foster the development of art

L-theanine prevents myocardial injury in sleep‑deprived mice by suppressing ferroptosis through SIRT1.

Green tea is obtained from Camellia sinensis, and its role in promoting heart health has been widely recognized in traditional Chinese medicine. L-theanine, one of the main bioactive components of green tea, has antioxidant and cardiovascular protective effects. However, the effects of L-theanine on myocardial cells in sleep-deprived mice and its potential mechanisms have not been clearly elucidated. This study utilized a modified multiple-platform water environment method to establish an SD model and induce a ferroptosis model in H9c2 cells pretreated with erastin. The cardiac function parame

Essential Oils of Some Potential Medicinal Plants and their Wound Healing Activities.

The wound has been recognised as a deep cut or tearing of the epidermis, which is also referred to as trauma and harm to the body tissues. Healing of wounds requires a coordinated series of cellular processes, including cell attraction, proliferation, differentiation, and angiogenesis. These processes involve interactions between various cells, such as macrophages, endothelial cells, keratinocytes, fibroblasts, growth hormones, and proteases. The outcome of wounds can be fatal if not treated properly, resulting in chronic wounds, chronic pain, and even death. Wound healing is replacing missing

Medicinal plants in mitigating electromagnetic radiation-induced neuronal damage: a concise review.

Although the evidence is inconclusive, epidemiological studies strongly suggest that increased exposure to electromagnetic radiation (EMR) increases the risk of brain tumors, parotid gland tumors, and seminoma. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified mobile phone radiofrequency radiation as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group 2B). Humans being are inadvertently being exposed to EMR as its prevalence increases, mainly through mobile phones. Radiation exposure is unavoidable in the current context, with mobile phones being an inevitable necessity. Prudent usage o
