INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Solitary spinal plasmacytoma (SSP) is an uncommon neoplasm originating from bone marrow plasma cells. Although infrequent in the thoracic region, it has the potential to induce substantial damage. In this study, we present the case of a patient with thoracic spine SSP treated through surgical intervention.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 38-year-old female who presented with progressive mid-back pain, numbness, weakness in both lower limbs and gait disturbance. Imaging showed an osteolytic lesion with vertebral collapse of T11. MRI was strongly suggesti

Solitary fibrous tumour (SFT), previously denominated as haemangiopericytoma, is a rare, spindle cell neoplasm that was first described in the thoracic pleura. It is now known that this tumour may develop from almost any anatomic location. We report a case of SFT, in a 65-year-old man, which was located in the muscularis propria layer of the caecum with involvement of the serosa and the ileocecal appendix, location never described in the literature, and with an uncommon clinical presentation of hematochezia. A radical right hemicolectomy was performed, and the patient was asymptomatic without

Chylous pericardial effusion is an uncommon entity that is most commonly associated with post-cardiac surgery, in particular aortic valve and minimally invasive cardiac surgery. Post-radiation therapy, infection, mediastinal neoplasm, lymphoma and a small group of idiopathic, spontaneous chylous pericardial effusion have also been reported as the causes. Here, we report a rare case of pericardial effusion secondary to chylous fistula in a 63-year-old man with Poland syndrome. The case highlights an unusual thoracic duct anomaly as a cause of our reported chylous pericardial effusion.

Intrapulmonary solitary fibrous tumours (SFTs) are exceptionally rare mesenchymal neoplasms, particularly when presenting as giant thoracic masses. We report a case of a 57-year-old woman with progressive chest pain and dyspnoea who initially presented with pleural effusion and hypoglycaemia and received empirical anti-tuberculosis therapy without improvement. Contrast-enhanced CT revealed a left lower lobe mass enlarging to 11 × 16.5 × 15.2 cm on repeat imaging, with rightward cardiac displacement, pericardial effusion and a hepatic nodule suspicious for metastasis to the liver. High-grade neuroendocrine neoplasms (HG-NENs) are clinically aggressive diseases, the classification of which has recently been redefined. They now include both poorly differentiated NENs (neuroendocrine carcinoma, NECs) and high proliferating well-differentiated NENs (called grade 3 neuroendocrine tumors, G3 NETs, in the digestive system). In the last decade, the "molecular revolution" that has affected all fields of medical oncology has also shed light in the understanding of HG NENs heterogeneity and has provided new diagnostic and therapeutic tools, useful in the management of these malign

The early years of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic introduced the global medical community to Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), a heretofore seldom encountered angiosarcomatous neoplasm associated with human herpesvirus-8. At that time, clinicians treating these KS patients were routinely exposed to the pulmonary manifestations of this malignancy, including characteristic airway lesions, peribronchovascular opacities, and the typically hemorrhagic pleural effusions. They also witnessed uncommon complications of pulmonary KS such as chylous effusions, diffuse alveolar hemorrhage, an

BACKGROUND: After the liver, the lungs represent the most frequent site of metastasis from primary tumours. Surgical treatment of lung secondary neoplasms leads to a significant improvement in survival.
METHODS: Between 1960-1997, 178 patients with lung metastases underwent surgery at the Thoracic Surgery Department of Turin University in a total of 193 operations. A retrospective study was made in order to identify the prognostic factors which influenced final survival in this population.
RESULTS: Overall survival was 47% after 2 years and 20% after five years. Prognosis was not influenced

A 7-year-old, neutered male domestic shorthair cat presented to a tertiary referral hospital for respiratory distress. Thoracic radiographs revealed severe tracheal stenosis, a cranial mediastinal mass, pleural effusion, and a perihilar bronchial pulmonary pattern. Neoplasia involving the trachea and cranial mediastinum was prioritized. Additional antemortem diagnostics were not pursued. With few reported treatment options, the owners elected euthanasia, and necropsy confirmed tracheal squamous cell carcinoma. Tracheal squamous cell carcinoma is a rare feline neoplasm associated with a poor pr

Thoracic duct cysts (TDC) within the retropharyngeal space and mediastinum are exceedingly rare lesions, with the majority related to trauma or neoplasm. We describe a case of an otherwise healthy 8-month-old boy who presented with severe respiratory distress, which was found to be caused by a large, spontaneous TDC occupying most the retropharyngeal and mediastinal space. To our knowledge, this is the youngest patient to date presenting with TDC. Ultimately, his TDC was completely resolved with sclerotherapy, however the patient's age and size presented unique challenges to his medical manage

Mediastinal and hilar renal cell carcinoma metastases are reported in 9 patients, representing an incidence rate of 8 per cent in the series. This observation indicated an ominous prognosis since the mean survival of these patients was only 1.4 months after the discovery of the neoplasm. It is postulated that this poor prognosis is attributable to the size of the primary lesion, with direct extension into retroperitoneal structures and perhaps to an associated exhaustion of immunologic defense mechanisms of the patients. Dissemination from the involved retroperitoneal lymphatics to the thoraci

An incidental large mediastinal mass on the left hemithorax was noted in the chest radiograph of a 21-year-old male with a history of active smoking (five pack years) after a manual reduction for left shoulder dislocation. Horner syndrome (HS) was elicited from history and physical examination. A contrast computed tomography (CT) of the thorax showed a large (8.1 x 7.3 x 7.3 cm), well-defined, heterogeneous enhancing mass over the left apical-posterior mediastinum. The CT-guided biopsy showed spindle cells, suggestive of lung neoplasm. Initial concerns were thus present for lung malignancy and

BACKGROUND: T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia (T-PLL) is a rare and highly aggressive mature T-cell malignancy that predominantly affects older adults. Its occurrence in childhood is exceptionally uncommon and may mimic other neoplasms, such as lymphoma or thymoma, particularly when associated with mediastinal masses or generalized lymphadenopathy.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 13-year-old Turkish girl presented with severe respiratory distress. Thoracic imaging demonstrated a large anterior mediastinal mass. In the prevascular mediastinal compartment, the most common tumors include thymoma, germ cell ne

Spinal extradural angiolipomas are rare benign tumours, accounting for only 0.14-1.2% of all spinal neoplasms. They are usually localized within the thoracic extradural space of the spinal canal and their common clinical presentation is myelopathy, mainly in the way of a slowly progressive paraparesis and sometimes in an acute form. We report the case of a 85 year old man who complained of bilateral lower limb weakness with sphincter disturbance of acute instauration. The MRI showed a posterior extradural lesion at L1-L2 level that compressed conus medularis and cauda equina. He underwent urge

Review of 643 autopsies revealed 374 cases of malignant neoplasms, of which 140 were found to have evidence of disease metastatic to the vertebral bodies of the thoracolumbar spine. A comparison is made of the proportion of cases detected by clinical radiographs antemortem vs. the cases of metastatic tumor of the spine detectable by radiographs of slabs of the spine and by histologic examination. A high degree of correlation was found between metastases detected by fine-detail radiography and those detected by microscopic examination. Thus, the incidence of neoplastic metastases to the thoraci

Azygos vein aneurysm is a rare thoracic disease that often mimics posterior mediastinum tumors. Pathogenesis of azygos vein aneurysm is unclear. Discussions about possible causes are still ongoing. Most aneurysms are asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally during standard examinations. Severe complications of azygos vein aneurysm include rupture with massive bleeding and pulmonary embolism. Contrast-enhanced chest CT and MRI are essential. Differential diagnosis includes tumors, cysts and rare neoplasms of the mediastinum. Treatment algorithm is not established. There are traditional surgical

Differentiating sarcoidosis from malignant neoplasms is not always easy. Sarcoidosis may present with bronchial stenosis and pseudotumorous formations in the lung and in various other organs. Conversely, metastatic or lymphomatous invasion of thoracic lymph nodes more often closely resembles the bilateral hilar adenopathies of sarcoidosis. Asymmetric lymph node swelling, while suggestive of malignancy, does not rule out sarcoidosis. Regional or generalised granuloma formation may occur in patients with malignant lymphoma or carcinoma of the lung, probably in reaction to neoplastic tissue. Its
