Experimental autoimmune prostatitis (EAP) could be induced in (C3H/HeMs X 129/J)F1 mice by thymectomy (Tx) at 3 days (Tx-3) but not at 0 or 7 days after birth. Appearance of EAP was noticed in the three lobes of the prostate, most frequently and severely in the anterior lobe (coagulating gland). EAP thus induced was characterized by a loss of secretory products in the lumen, massive lymphocytic infiltration in the stroma, especially beneath the epithelial cells, and by the presence of circulating autoantibody(ies) against the epithelial cells of the prostate (APA). EAP started at puberty and i…

Post-irradiation transplantation of normal thyroids under the renal capsule of syngenetic thymectomized and irradiated (Tx-X) rats leads to the development of thyroiditis in the ectopic grafted thyroids. A close correlation was observed between the extent of the lesions in the grafted and recipient's own thyroid. The histopathology of both grafted and recipient thyroid was similar and was characterized by infiltration with mononuclear cells together with some plasma cells. Conversely, grafting of affected thyroids from Tx-X rats to normal animals resulted in the regression of the lesion in the

BACKGROUND: Secondary hyperparathyroidism (sHPT) is common in patients with chronic renal failure. Despite the initiation of new therapeutic … udies demonstrated a lower rate of recurrent sHPT of 0-4% after PTX without autotransplantation and thymectomy (TPTX) with no higher morbidity when compared to the standard procedures. The observed superiority of TPTX is flawed due to different definitions of outcomes, varying follow up periods and different surgical treatment strategies (with and without th …

BACKGROUND: Robotic system was recently introduced to assist surgeons in performing thymectomy. However, whether robot-assisted thoracoscopic thymectomy (RATT) could replace video-assisted thoracoscopic thymectomy (VATT) and be considered as a superior treatment for thymic epithelial tumors is still controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the progression-free survival (PFS) and short-term clinical outcomes in patients undergoing RATT or VATT by comparing the matched two groups after performing propensity score analysis.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical data of 29…

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disorder in which antibodies are produced against post-synaptic acetylcholine receptors, thereby causing impairment of neuromuscular transmission. Diagnosis of MG is confirmed with the AChR antibody test and via an Electromyography. Although medical treatment with acetylcholinesterase inhibitors remains the main treatment of MG, in recent years thymectomy has become an integral part of the treatment algorithm. Numerous factors such as the Patient's age, presence of AChR antibodies, or MuSK antibody, the severity of disease affect the decision of preformi…

BACKGROUND: Completion thymectomy may be performed in patients with non-thymomatous refractory myasthenia gravis (MG) to allow a complete and definitive clearance from residual thymic tissue located in the mediastinum or in lower neck. Hereby we present our short- and long-term results of completion thymectomy using subxiphoid video-assisted thoracoscopy.
METHODS: Between July 2010 and December 2017, 15 consecutive patients with refractory non-thymomatous myasthenia, 8 women and 7 men with a median age of 44 [interquartile range (IQR) 38.5-53.5] years, underwent video-thoracoscopic completion…

BACKGROUND: We present a video case with a novel, minimally invasive approach to the thymus, which does not require a sternotomy, thoracic incision, or entry into the pleural space.
METHODS: A 14-year-old girl was referred to our clinic with dysphagia and left sided thymic mass. A detailed video shows the operative techniques used to perform a thymectomy with robotic assistance via a transaxillary approach.
RESULTS: The procedure was tolerated well and without complication. The patient was discharged the day after surgery and was symptom free at her 2-week follow-up appointment.
CONCLUSION:…

Robotic procedures in the anterior mediastinum can be challenging in the existence of pectus excavatum deformity due to the limited intrathoracic working space caused by sternal depression. We propose that the temporary application of a vacuum bell device during the procedure can correct the deformity and thus, facilitate robotic approach similarly to the standard procedure.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Thymectomy is an effective treatment for myasthenia gravis (MG) with anti-acetylcholine receptor (AChR) antibodies. We rarely encounter patients who develop MG after surgery for thymic tumors. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics and frequency of post-thymectomy onset (PostTx) MG.
METHODS: We reviewed the clinical information of thymoma-associated MG in 158 patients. Of these, 18 (11%) patients with PostTx MG were identified.
RESULTS: The presence of anti-AChR antibodies (82%) and electrophysiological abnormalities (50%) was confirmed before thymectomy …

Currently, surgical techniques that are less invasive than conventional median sternotomy are used for thymectomy in the treatment of myasthenia gravis and anterior mediastinal tumors as no sternal incision is required. We reported on a subxiphoid single-port thymectomy using CO2 insufflation, which has the following advantages: (I) the field of view offered by the camera scope inserted from the midline of the body helps confirm the location of the superior pole of the thymus and bilateral phrenic nerves; (II) there is minimal pain and no intercostal neuropathy occurs as intercostal spaces are…

BACKGROUND: Extended thymectomy is indicated for patients with myasthenia gravis (MG) when drug-resistance or dependence is seen. We have employed a technique for subcostal thoracoscopic extended thymectomy (STET) on patients with MG.
METHODS: Clinical data of 15 eligible patients who underwent STET in our department from February 2015 to November 2015 by the same surgical team were retrospectively analyzed. The operation time, blood loss, duration of postoperative hospital stay, thoracic drainage periods were concerned.
RESULTS: All the surgeries were finished successfully without conversio…

Thymic carcinoid tumour associated with pulmonary squamous cell carcinoma is very rare. We present a case of synchronous lung cancer and mediastinal tumour treated with simultaneous video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) sleeve lobectomy and thymectomy. A 67-year old man presented with cough and bloody sputum. Chest computed tomography showed an anterior mediastinal mass with a right hilar nodule. A right upper sleeve lobectomy and a thymectomy were performed via a VATS approach. Thymic carcinoid tumour associated with pulmonary squamous cell carcinoma was diagnosed, and the patient recei…
