Previous research has not clearly illustrated the impact of serum iron status on thyroid cancer. Bi-directional and multivariable Mendelian randomization (MVMR) analyses were conducted to determine the causative effects of serum iron status on thyroid cancer. Genetic markers for serum iron status, including serum iron, ferritin, transferrin saturation (TSTA), and transferrin, were acquired from the Genetics of Iron Status. The primary analytical method employed was inverse variance weighting, supplemented by other sensitivity approaches to validate the consistency of the results. Genetically p

The fifth edition of the Classification of Endocrine and Neuroendocrine Tumors has been released by the World Health Organization. This timely publication integrates several changes to the nomenclature of non-neoplastic and neoplastic thyroid diseases, as well as novel concepts that are essential for patient management. The heterogeneous group of non-neoplastic and benign neoplastic lesions are now collectively termed as 'thyroid follicular nodular disease' to better reflect the clonal and non-clonal proliferations that clinically present as multinodular goiter. Thyroid neoplasms originating f

The question of thyroid neoplasia following high-dose radiation treatment to the neck and mediastinum for malignant neoplasms such as Hodgkin's lymphoma in children and young adults has been raised recently. Five patients, 19 to 39 years old, were operated on for thyroid neoplasms that developed following cervical and mediastinal radiation therapy for Hodgkin's lymphoma. Three patients had papillary carcinomas and two had follicular adenomas. The latency period between radiation exposure and the diagnosis of thyroid neoplasm ranged from eight to 16 years. This limited series provided strong su

Background: Mutations in the promoter region of TERT (TERTp) in thyroid nodules with indeterminate cytology are quoted to confer a high (∼80-95%) probability for thyroid carcinoma when detected on genomic classifier (GC) ThyroSeq. TERTp mutations may also occur in benign and low-risk thyroid neoplasms, and the risk of malignancy (ROM) in nodules harboring TERTp mutations without BRAFV600E is unknown. We analyzed the ROM and the surgical diagnosis in a retrospective cohort of thyroid nodules with TERTp treated at two academic medical centers. Methods: From 2323 patients with ThyroSeq GC perform

Neoplastic data on 1370 control Wistar rats from 10 carcinogenicity bioassays done between 1980 and 1990 were reviewed. Mean percentage survival at 104 weeks was 58% for males and 59% for females. A total of 1857 neoplasms were diagnosed in 466 (68%) male and 582 (85%) female rats; 1390 were benign and 467 were malignant (12% with metastasis). Seventy-four percent of all neoplasms were in endocrine and reproductive systems. Most common neoplasms (affecting more than 7% of either sex) were pituitary adenoma (27.7% males; 55.0% females), mammary fibroadenoma (1.0% males; 25.3% females), mammary

There have been many recent advances in our understanding of thyroid disease, including thyroid physiology, the molecular biology of thyroid neoplasms, guidelines for the management of surgical thyroid disease and the operative approach to thyroidectomy. The control of thyroid growth and function is better understood now that the thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) receptor has been characterized as a G-protein coupled transmembrane receptor. The peripheral action of thyroid hormones is also better understood in terms of their interaction with nuclear thyroid hormone receptors. An adenoma-carcin

Diagnosis of oncocytic neoplasm of the thyroid gland can be challenging especially on fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB), given the wide differential diagnoses. In this report, we present the case of a 66-year-old male with an incidental thyroid nodule identified on imaging. In this case, identification of the distinctive cytologic features leads to the diagnosis of papillary oncocytic neoplasm on FNAB and helped to decide the appropriate surgical management. To date, the cytomorphologic features of this lesion are not well studied and established, with only a single case report in the liter

Thyroid cancer is the second most common malignancy following breast cancer in Arab females. Thioredoxin (TRX) is a small multi-functional redox protein with both intracellular and extracellular functions. The protein exists in either a reduced form (thioredoxin-SH2) or an oxidized form (thioredoxin-S2). TRX acts as an enhancement for growth factors and stimulates the growth of cancer cells. In this study of thyroid neoplasms, involving 121 female and 62 male patients, expression of TRX and TRX-R was studied using purified mouse anti-human TRX monoclonal antibody and anti-human TRX-R antiserum

BACKGROUND: Synovial sarcoma, generally known as a soft tissue tumor, can also occur in the head and neck region, including the thyroid gland. Cytologic findings are important to differentiate the tumor from other types of neoplasms arising in the thyroid gland.
CASE: A 60-year-old man complained of hoarseness. A palpable neck tumor was detected, and a computed tomography scan showed a thyroid tumor accompanied by destruction of the thyroid and cricoid cartilage. The results of a preoperative fine needle aspiration biopsy showed numerous spindle cells with pale cytoplasm and oval nuclei with

Thyroid cancer, being the prevailing form of endocrine malignancy, exhibits a notable surge in its incidence rates. Follicular thyroid carcinoma (FTC) and papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) represent the predominant well-differentiated subtypes and are recognized as the most prevalent forms of thyroid carcinomas. Over the course of several years, numerous molecular, genetic, and epigenetic modifications have been discerned in diverse forms of thyroid neoplasms. Common occurrences comprise point mutations in the BRAF and RAS genes, along with chromosomal rearrangements involving the RET/PTC and

BACKGROUND: Mutations in the tumor protein 53 gene (TP53 mutation) in thyroid nodules are quoted to confer a high (80%) probability of malignancy when detected on the ThyroSeq v3 genomic classifier if associated with other molecular alterations. However, TP53 mutation also occurs in benign and low-risk thyroid neoplasms. Thus, the risk of malignancy in nodules harboring TP53 mutation is not well characterized.
METHODS: Of 4,575 molecularly profiled preoperative fine-needle aspiration samples, 36 (0.8%) were identified harboring TP53 mutation. The study included 32 cases in which the pathology

Recognition of noninvasive follicular thyroid neoplasms with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFTP) that distinguishes them from invasive malignant encapsulated follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (EFVPTC) can prevent overtreatment of NIFTP patients. We and others have previously reported that programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) is a useful biomarker in thyroid tumors; however, all reports to date have relied on manual scoring that is time consuming as well as subject to individual bias. Consequently, we developed a digital image analysis (DIA) protocol for cytoplasmic and membran

Recent studies on paraffin-embedded tissue have shown that the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p27(Kip1) is expressed in normal thyroid cells, whereas it is downregulated in neoplastic cells. This prospective study was undertaken to assess whether p27(Kip1) staining may also be applied to fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) samples of the thyroid. We present here our preliminary results on 100 FNABs examined for p27(Kip1) expression. p27(Kip1) expression was assessed by immunocytochemistry; the technique was optimized on smears prepared from a normal thyreocyte cell line (TL5), which conspi

Presence of microfilaria in the thyroid gland is a rare finding. Filariasis is a common public health problem in the Indian sub-continent. Most of the cases of microfilaria in thyroid gland reported in the literature are associated with goiter and thyroid neoplasms. Here, we present a rare case that showed microfilaria on fine needle aspiration cytology of solitary thyroid nodule.

AIMS: Analysis of a thyroid neoplasm in a person with Down syndrome.
METHOD: Report of a case and review of the literature.
RESULTS: A 34-year-old woman with Down syndrome developed a right thyroid low-grade follicular carcinoma. She is alive 20 years after the discovery of the initial tumor. A review of the literature including epidemiological studies revealed only one unspecified cancer, one papillary carcinoma and one lymphoma. Persons with Down syndrome present an excess of goiter and thyroiditis and often are overweight and have low serum selenium, all these conditions being risk factor

An 82-year-old patient presented a progressively growing hard thyroid nodule, and left ptosis. Additionally, ophthalmologic evaluation revealed ipsilateral miosis, diagnostic findings of Horner syndrome. Computerized tomography revealed a 7.5-cm thyroid mass infiltrating the main neck vessels. Although clinical and imaging data were suggestive of poorly differentiated thyroid carcinoma, fine-needle aspiration led to the diagnosis of papillary carcinoma. Paliative care was proposed to the patient due to the advanced stage of the neoplasm and to significant comorbidities. Horner syndrome is an i

We describe an unusual case of metastatic disease to the thyroid, characterized by massive intra-arterial embolization and clinical presentation as acute thyroiditis. The patient, a 37-year-old woman with a history of breast carcinoma, presented clinically with acute thyroiditis. No nodules were palpable, and fine-needle aspiration cytology of the left lobe was performed. It showed a pleomorphic carcinoma and was followed by total thyroidectomy. Histology disclosed a pleomorphic carcinoma diffusely affecting the thyroid gland. It was characterized by an extensive intra-arterial tumoral emboliz

Breast cancer is the most common malignant neoplasm among women. Metastases to the thyroid are relatively rare. Those lesions annunciate neoplasm dissemination in most cases. Metastatic breast cancer of thyroid lobe regrowth hasn't been described yet. In the article the authors present a case of a 66-year old women with isolated, metachronous breast cancer metastasis in regrowth of the right thyroid lobe. Resection of the right lobe with metastatic tumor was performed with a purpose of total recovery. Despite surgery, multiple bone metastases were detected a few months after. In conclusion, re

The role of fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology in the evaluation of thyroid lesions in not as well established in children when compared with adults. Hence we aimed to ascertain the utility and limitations of FNA in childhood thyroid lesions. This was a retrospective analysis of all thyroid FNA performed in children less than 14 years of age over a 4-year period (2005-2009). Histopathological follow-up was available in six cases. A total of 77 cases were included in the analysis. The most common cytological diagnosis was lymphocytic thyroiditis (49.3%), followed by colloid goiter (18.2%), h
