Riedel's thyroiditis is a rare condition with an unknown aetiology. The condition was discovered by Riedel in 1883. In 1904, Hashimoto described another condition of invasive fibrous thyroiditis. Since then it has been discussed whether Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Riedel's thyroiditis are one disease in different states or whether they are two different diseases. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is known to have an autoimmune aetiology and can be seen in conjunction with other autoimmune diseases such as pernicious anaemia. The co-existence of Riedel's thyroiditis and pernicious anaemia is reported for

To examine the role played by adhesion molecules in thyroid autoimmunity, we have assessed the effect of administering monoclonal antibodies (mAb) against intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 (LFA-1) in experimental autoimmune thyroiditis, induced by immunizing rats with thyroglobulin in complete Freund's adjuvant. The antibody against LFA-1, but not against ICAM-1, reduced thyroglobulin antibody production (P < 0.01) and both antibodies caused a significant reduction (P < 0.002) in the severity of the thyroidal lymphocytic infiltration. AIMS: To compare the prevalence of thyroid peroxidase antibodies in 25 children with autoimmune thyroid disorders and in 41 children and young adults with type 1 diabetes, and to test the prevalence of thyrotropin receptor antibodies.
METHODS: Two commercially available radioimmunoassays for antibodies to thyroid peroxidase, a commercially available agglutination test of particles coated with thyroid microsomal antigens, and a radioimmunoassay for thyrotropin receptor antibodies were used. Patients and controls were studied.
RESULTS: One of the radioimmunoassays detected thyroid peroxidase a

Distal renal tubular acidosis (DRTA) is characterized by a urine of inappropriately high pH in the presence of a metabolic acidosis. Female patients with DRTA may have associated autoimmune disorders. We have described a patient with DRTA, followed by acute thyroiditis and autoimmune hemolytic anemia within 2 years. This combination of autoimmune diseases has not been described previously. These conditions are likely linked by an autoimmune pathogenesis. Clinicians are advised that some patients with DRTA may subsequently have features of any autoimmune disorder as the natural history of the d

A 16-year-old male with long-standing atrophic chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis was evaluated for macroorchidism. A testicular biopsy prior to treatment revealed peritubular and interstitial fibrosis, reduced spermatogenesis and sparse Leydig cells with nonprominent smooth endoplasmic reticulum. Biological/immunological LH and FSH ratios were reduced, I-LH and FSH response to GnRH was blunted, and levels of testosterone and androstenedione were low. Twenty-two months after thyroid treatment, the testicular size was unchanged, and the degree of fibrosis showed minimal regression. Spermatogenesis

The possible immunosuppressive action of antithyroid drugs in vivo has been assessed using Buffalo (Buf) strain rats with thyroiditis produced by neonatal thymectomy; this model shares many features with spontaneous thyroiditis in man. Both propylthiouracil and methimazole significantly reduced the severity of thyroiditis (P less than 0.01 compared to controls), irrespective of effects on thyroid status. Thyroidal Ox 8 (suppressor/cytotoxic) and W3/25 (helper) T-cells were reduced in number equally in treated animals, and thyroid follicular cell Ia expression was absent in a high proportion of

Cell samples derived from the thyroid glands of twelve children with juvenile autoimmune thyroiditis (JAIT) were analysed. The cytological findings were those of chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis in eight and suggestive of that disease in four patients. About 86% of the cells infiltrating the thyroid were lymphocytes, 4% were lymphoid blasts, 6% neutrophils and 3% monocytes. Analysis using monoclonal antibodies showed that about 60% of the lymphocytes were T cells and half of the lymphocytes expressed HLA Class II-antigens. T helper cells dominated with a T helper/suppressor ratio of 2.2 in thyr

The effect of thyroid hormones on experimental autoimmune thyroiditis in the rat has been studied to determine whether the autoimmune process is influenced by alteration of thyroid hormone secretion from the diseased gland. Restoration of thyroid hormone levels in vivo had no effect on thyroglobulin antibody production or thyroiditis, and no effect of thyroid hormone on antibody secretion was found with in vitro culture of lymphocytes, suggesting that the pathogenesis of autoimmune thyroiditis is independent of thyroid hormone secretion.

Twenty-five episodes of postpartum primary hypothyroidism were observed in 23 patients without thyroid hormone treatment: three were cases of irreversible hypothyroidism and the others were of transient hypothyroidism. The characteristics of transient postpartum hypothyroidism deduced by serial observations on 14 patients were [1] a high incidence of previous goiter; [2] thyroid enlargement at 1/2 to 4 months postpartum; [3] hypothyroidism at 3 to 5 months postpartum; [4] spontaneous recovery at 5 to 10 months postpartum; [5] high titers of antithyroid microsomal antibodies; and [6] persistenc
