Sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy simulating subacute thyroiditis.

A white woman who had sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphoadenopathy (SHML) presented with a painful goiter and tender cervical lymph nodes. She had biochemical evidence of hypothyroidism but remained clinically euthyroid. Histologic examination confirmed SHML in the thyroid and cervical lymph nodes. The disease remitted spontaneously.

[Occurrence of fibrosis in subacute de Quervain thyroiditis].

Subacute thyroiditis of de Quervain is histologically characterized by an inflammatory reaction with histiocytes and giant cells around residues of colloid, producing a tubercle-like granulomatous picture. A variable degree of fibrosis occurs, but recovery is generally almost complete. Investigation of a series of thyroid glands with de Quervain's thyroiditis gave the impression of rather extensive and increasing fibrosis in most of these glands. To substantiate this impression we reviewed the histological slides of all our cases of de Quervain's thyroiditis diagnosed at the Department of Path

[Peripheral K lymphocytes in patients with subacute thyroiditis].

In a previous study, we showed that immunosuppressive acidic protein (IAP) was markedly increased in the acute phase in patients with subacute thyroiditis (SAT). In order to investigate the immunological abnormalities in SAT, peripheral K lymphocytes in SAT and hyperthyroidism were measured by the plaque-forming technique using sheep-red-blood cells as a target. The effect of the patients' serum on K-cells in normal lymphocytes was also investigated. The percentages of K-cells in 5 patients with SAT in the acute and recovery phases were 2.3 +/- 1.9 (mean +/- S.D.) and 5.3 +/- 2.2%, respectivel

Pyrexia of unknown origin due to subacute thyroiditis.

Subacute thyroiditis is an inflammatory thyroid disorder that typically presents with anterior neck pain, thyroid tenderness and transient thyrotoxicosis. Presentation as pyrexia of unknown origin (PUO) without classical thyroid symptoms is uncommon and may lead to diagnostic delay. We report a case of a patient in their late 50s who presented with persistent evening febrile spikes, weight loss and markedly elevated inflammatory markers, fulfilling the criteria for PUO. Extensive evaluation for infectious, malignant and autoimmune causes was unrevealing. Careful repeat clinical examination reve

Advances in Subacute Thyroiditis: Pathogenesis, Diagnosis, and Therapies.

Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is an inflammatory thyroid disease that is often associated with viral infections. In particular, SARS-COV-2 and its vaccine were found to cause SAT during the recent COVID-19 pandemic. However, the pathogenesis, clinical features, and processes still need further profiling. Recently, there are new findings and understanding about the pathogenic mechanisms of SAT. Some HLA genes have been shown to increase the risk of SAT development, and inflammatory cytokine storms could promote the progression of SAT. Some new diagnostic criteria for SAT have been proposed to faci

Subacute thyroiditis after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.

Since the emergence of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Several autoimmune and subacute thyroiditis (SAT) cases are on the rise all over the world. COVID-19 vaccine-associated SAT cases have also been reported. In this article, we present our data on 5 vaccine-associated SAT cases. We evaluated the type of vaccine received, the time between vaccination and the onset of SAT symptoms, laboratory findings, treatments administered, and response to treatment. The age of patients ranged from 31 to 43 years old. Three (60 %) patients had been diagnosed as SAT after the first dose, and tow (40
