Dermatophytic mycetoma of the scalp is a rarity, especially when not associated with tinea capitis. Here, we report a case of dermatophytic mycetoma of the scalp, that was not associated with tinea capitis, caused by an atypical Microsporum audouinii strain. To our knowledge, this is the second reported case, thirty-eight years after the first that was published in 1980.

Dermatophytosis in Kuwait was found to be associated with poor, over-crowded socioeconomic localities. This infection occurred in all age groups, but patients below 10 years of age were most susceptible. Tinea capitis was observed in 71.1% of 135 patients with dermatophytosis, with a higher incidence (48.2%) in males than in females. Microsporum canis caused 60.7% of all cases of dermatophytosis and 76% of tinea capitis. A high rate of failure to culture from microscopically positive specimens was observed in tinea cruris and onychomycosis.

The anthropophilic agents of tinea capitis are being eradicated from their historic areas in developed and developing nations. The one exception is T. tonsurans in the United States and Canada. In these nations, the infections are increasing among black children, probably because of hair style and hygiene habits. Elsewhere in the world, M. canis has become or is becoming the dominant agent of tinea capitis. Tinea corporis reflects either the dominant agent of tinea capitis or the sphere of T. rubrum. Trichophyton rubrum is the most common agent worldwide of crural and pedal disease and often t…

This paper is a clinical study of 57 cases of infection with Trichophyton tonsurans (T. tonsurans) examined in our clinic between January 2004 and July 2006. The patients were 31 high school students, 19 junior high school students, 2 primary school students, 1 kindergartener, and 4 sports instructors. The male:female ratio was 51:6. Most patients were male Judo practitioners. Patients were clinically categorized as follows: 13 cases of tinea capitis {10 containing black dot ringworms (BDR), 2 scaled, and 1 with inflammation}, 41 cases of tinea corporis, 1 case of tinea manum, and 7 carriers. …

In summary, terbinafine is a broad-spectrum allylamine, which has been used to treat superficial fungal infections including onychomycosis, … fection. Terbinafine has been shown to be effective and safe in several studies of the treatment of tinea capitis and onychomycosis in children. When treating Trichophyton tinea capitis the length of therapy may be 2 or 4 weeks. Microsporum tinea capitis may require somewhat higher or longer doses of terbinafine for adequate efficacy. These regimens still tend …

Dermatomycoses are caused most commonly by dermatophytes. The anthropophilic dermatophyte Trichophyton rubrum is still the most frequent cau … the increasing number of cases of onychomycosis - mostly due to T. rubrum - in infancy. In Germany, tinea capitis is mostly caused by zoophilic dermatophytes, in particular Microsporum canis. A three-year retrospective analysis of fungi isolated from specimens of patients with superficial fungal infections in French Guiana is presented. Clinical samples from 726 patients with presumptive diagnoses of onychomycosis (28.2% of the patients), tinea capitis (27.8%), superficial cutaneous mycoses of the feet (22.0%), and of other areas of the body (21.9%), were assessed by microscopic examination and culture. Dermatophytes accounted for 59.2% of the isolates, followed by yeasts (27.5%) and non-dermatophytic molds (13.1%). Trichophyton rubrum was the most common dermatophyte recovered fro…

Twenty-five years ago many of the topical remedies for superficial mycoses were irritating, toxic, or allergenic. Total x-ray depilation of the scalp was the accepted mode of therapy for tinea capitis. The introduction of topical nystatin for candidiasis and tolnaftate for dermatophytosis were major advances, but tinea capitis, onychomycosis, and chronic tinea pedis still presented problems. Soon after its introduction in 1958, griseofulvin became the definitive form of therapy for all types of dermatophytosis and played a major role in abolishing large-scale epidemics of tinea capitis in some…

Clinical and laboratory data from 22 children with tinea corporis and tinea capitis caused by Microsporum canis (10 tinea corporis, 12 tinea capitis), confirmed by microscopic examination and culture and partly pretreated with griseofulvin or terbinafine, are summarized. The children were treated consecutively with itraconazole in our clinic during 1994/95. The age of the children ranged between 4 and 13 years, with girls being affected much more frequently than boys. Oral, individually adapted, high-dose treatment of 5 mg itraconazole per kg body weight proved to be successful. In all 22 chil…

In preparing guidelines for dermatomycosis (tinea, trichophytia, dermatophytosis), we have primarily summarized the disease types and treatments as described in 4 textbooks used in Japan and abroad. We present our classification draft based on these following descriptions. In Japan, any dermatophytosis other than favus or tinea imbricata is considered to be tinea, while outside Japan, favus and tinea imbricata are also classified as tinea. Tinea capitis is classified together with trichophytia superficialis capillitii and kerion celsi, in a group that tends to include asymptomatic carriers. Mo…

Fungal and viral skin infections are common and typically are managed by family physicians. The fungal skin infections commonly seen in family practice include the various forms of tinea: tinea corporis, tinea gladiatorum, tinea cruris, tinea pedis, tinea capitis, and tinea unguium (eg, onychomycosis). Common viral skin infections include herpes simplex virus infection, herpes zoster, cutaneous and genital warts, and molluscum contagiosum. Many fungal and viral skin infections have a classic appearance but variations and atypical manifestations can make patients with these conditions difficult…

Tinea capitis in men, even if infected with HIV, is infrequent. Microsporum species nail infections are extremely rare. In most cases Microsporum canis infection is usually easy to treat with antifungal agents. We describe two HIV-infected men with an unusual M. canis infection. Both patients had tinea capitis, presenting as alopecia in one and scaling of the scalp in the other. One patient also had tinea unguium caused by M. canis. Ketoconazole was ineffective in both patients; terbinafine was tried in one patient without benefit; itraconazole was effective in both, but treatment took many mo…
