BACKGROUND: Scabies is an intensely itchy parasitic infection of the skin caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite. It is a common public health problem with an estimated global prevalence of 300 million cases. Serious adverse effects have been reported for some drugs used to treat scabies.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate topical and systemic drugs for treating scabies.

The risks of incidents and accidents--especially systemic ones--complicating topical scabies treatment in infants are reviewed. After a short review concerning insecticides (sulphur, benzyl-benzoate, DDT, Lindane, Crotamiton) and the use of several drugs proposed for infants, the authors insist on the choice of the drug and the therapeutic protocol, that are as important as the drug itself. Directions for use should be strict, in order to avoid automedication and overdosage. There is no study concerning the comparative evaluation of risks and efficacy of each drug.

Scabies (or Sarcoptic mange) is a highly contagious skin disease caused by the ectoparasite Sarcoptes scabiei. The resistance of S. scabiei to common acaricides like permethrin has been reported, yet their precise mechanisms remain elusive. We report the case of solitary mastocytoma, which appeared under the identification bracelet on the left wrist of a 2-day-old newborn infant. Stroking the lesion elicited Darier's sign. Histopathologic examination of a punch biopsy specimen revealed a dense mast cell infiltrate of the dermis, which was confirmed by Giemsa and toluidine blue stains. We believe that this case represents and unusual reactive process.

Cultures of white cells derived from peripheral blood of individuals homozygous and heterozygous for the inherited mucopolysaccharidoses revealed a distinct intracellular metachromatic staining with toluidine blue O. These short-term cultures circumvent the technical problems of skin fibroblast cultures and provide a simple screening procedure to detect the heterozygous state for the mucopolysaccharidoses, as well as offering an opportunity to study the heterozygous state of various inherited storage diseases.

We describe a procedure for detection of fat emboli in formalin fixed tissue using osmium tetroxide postfixation. Intravascular fat in tissue postfixed in osmium tetroxide, embedded in epoxy or paraffin, and stained with toluidine blue, hematoxylin, or Oil Red O is more easily visualized than in frozen tissue that is stained with Oil Red O. With these methods, fat emboli may be detected years after the initial autopsy.

BACKGROUND: Functional gallbladder disorder (FGD) is characterized by recurrent biliary colic with a decreased gallbladder ejection fraction on cholescintigraphy but absence of visible gallbladder abnormalities on ultrasonography. FGD is generally regarded as a primary gallbladder motility disturbance, however, the underlying pathophysiology remains largely unknown. The thyroparathyroid complex of house shrews was cut into serial sections. For demonstration of calcitonin cells (C cells) the sections were stained by HE, PAS/haematoxylin, Heidenhain's iron haematoxylin, Mallory's aniline blue, toluidine blue, Davenport's silver impregnation and lead haematoxylin. The C cells are oval to slender in shape and are distributed unevenly (totally lacking from the peripheral, cranial, caudal and isthmus region).
