Assessment of coronary atherosclerosis using optical coherence tomography.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a catheter-based imaging system that uses near-infrared light to produce cross-sectional images of the coronary arteries. With its extraordinarily high resolution (10-20 μm), OCT allows clinicians to observe various morphological features of coronary atherosclerosis in vivo. For example, intimal thickening presents as homogeneous, signal-rich regions on OCT, while fibroatheroma with a lipid-rich necrotic core is characterized by the presence of signal-poor regions with a diffuse border. Furthermore, plaque rupture is detected in 50〜70% of culprit lesions o

Optical coherence tomography for multifocal vitelliform macular dystrophy.

PURPOSE: To describe the optical coherence tomography (OCT) features of multifocal vitelliform macular dystrophy (VMD). METHODS: Five patients (10 eyes) with multifocal VMD were examined by slit lamp biomicroscopy, fundus photography, and OCT. RESULTS: Serous retinal detachment was present in the macular area in all eyes. A hyperreflective inner/outer segment interface was observed in the macula in nine of them. High reflectivity was homogeneous in six eyes of three patients with no prominent macular lesion. Retinoschisis-like changes could be clearly seen in four eyes evaluated by high-reso

[Optical coherence tomography in the diagnosis of achromatopsia].

CASE REPORT: The case of a fifty five year-old male with nyctalopia, photophobia, poor colour vision and nystagmus, is presented. The initial suspected diagnoses were achromatopsia and blue-cone monochromatism, since both are clinically indistinguishable. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) showed the characteristic foveal reflectivity pattern of achromatopsia. This diagnosis was subsequently confirmed by genetic study. DISCUSSION: OCT is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging method that allows tissue morphology to be observed with high resolution. Its use might be of great help to distinguish cli

In vivo endoscopic multi-beam optical coherence tomography.

A multichannel optical coherence tomography (multi-beam OCT) system and an in vivo endoscopic imaging probe were developed using a swept-source OCT system. The distal optics were micro-machined to produce a high numerical aperture, multi-focus fibre optic array. This combination resulted in a transverse design resolution of <10 microm full width half maximum (FWHM) throughout the entire imaging range, while also increasing the signal intensity within the focus of the individual channels. The system was used in a pre-clinical rabbit study to acquire in vivo structural images of the colon and ex

Optical coherence tomography in imaging of macular diseases.

OCT (opitcal coherence tomography), is a diagnostic method that enables the analysis of the retinal structures by means of high-resolution tomographic cross-sections of the retina. Whereas fluorescein and indocyanine angiography allow visualization of the retinal epithelium layer and chorioretinal vessels, OCT may help in diagnosing and monitoring the condition of many internal retinal layers. Ultrasound B-mode examinations have a resolution of about 150 microm while OCT provides a resolution of 10 microm. OCT makes it possible to detect and measure morphological changes, retinal thickness, re

Evaluation of myocardial bridges with optical coherence tomography.

This study investigated the morphological characteristics of myocardial bridges (MBs) using optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging compared with coronary artery angiography (CAG) and also evaluated atherosclerotic lesions in the proximal segments of MBs. Twelve patients (seven males, five females, age range 36 - 81 years) with MBs in the left anterior descending coronary artery were enrolled and examined. The mean +/- SD length of the MBs measured by OCT appeared significantly longer than when measured by CAG (20.5 +/- 4.2 mm versus 15.6 +/- 3.5 mm, respectively). The mean +/- SD maximal e

The use of optical coherence tomography in neurology.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive imaging technique routinely used in ophthalmology to visualize and quantify the layers of the retina. OCT allows direct visualization and measurement of the topography of the optic nerve head and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness in the peripapillary and macular regions with micron-scale resolution. These measurements are of particular interest in optic neuropathies and in numerous neurologic disorders in which there is axonal loss, such as multiple sclerosis. This article provides a detailed overview of OCT and its potential applications i

[Optical coherence tomography in central retinal artery occlusion].

CLINICAL CASES: Three eyes with central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) have been studied. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) was performed in each of them. Ophthalmoscopic signs of CRAO were equivocal in the three eyes. However, the presence of a hyporeflective signal in the OCT scan could be seen clearly in each of them. DISCUSSION: The presence of a hyporeflective band between the neurosensory retina and the retinal pigment epithelium in OCT images, that persist for several months after a CRAO episode, is useful in establishing the diagnosis in these patients.

Can high-resolution optical coherence tomography provide an optical biopsy for ocular surface lesions?

High-resolution optical coherence tomography (HR-OCT) has transformed the diagnosis and management of ocular surface lesions. Providing a detailed cross-sectional view of the cornea and conjunctiva, HR-OCT can be used to identify characteristic features of various benign and malignant ocular surface lesions, aiding in their diagnosis and guiding treatment. When incorporated into an ophthalmology clinic, HR-OCT provides morphological images of lesions in a noninvasive means, akin to an "optical biopsy". The characteristic HR-OCT features of several lesions have been well described in the litera

Imaging depth extension of optical coherence tomography in rabbit eyes using optical clearing agents.

Optical coherence tomography has become an indispensable diagnostic tool in ophthalmology for imaging the retina and the anterior segment of the eye. However, the imaging depth of optical coherence tomography is limited by light attenuation in tissues due to optical scattering and absorption. In this study of rabbit eye both ex vivo and in vivo, optical coherence tomography imaging depth of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye was extended by using optical clearing agents to reduce multiple scattering. The sclera, the iris, and the ciliary body were clearly visualized by direct appli
