Relationship between dental erosion and respiratory symptoms in patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.

OBJECTIVES: Both dental erosion and respiratory symptoms are extra-oesophageal manifestations of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The aim of this study was to determine whether dental erosion was correlated with respiratory symptoms in GERD patients. METHODS: 88 GERD patients were recruited and assigned to three groups mainly according to the frequency of respiratory symptoms: Group I: never; Group II: occasional (1-2 days a week or less); Group III: frequent (3-5 days a week or more). All patients underwent medical evaluations, including medical history, questionnaire answering and

[Erosion. Clinical aspects--diagnosis--risk factors--prevention--therapy].

Dental erosions have a multifactorial genesis. Acids of intrinsic and extrinsic origin are thought to be the main aetiologic factors, but also abrasive components can be involved in tooth destruction. This overview gives information about the clinical appearence and the risk factors for the developement of erosive lesions. In addition, preventive and therapeutic measures are discussed. The knowledge about the patient's history, the accurate clinical examination and the correct diagnosis are prerequisites for an adequate preventive and therapeutic concept. It is important to get data about diet

Classification of dental surface defects in areas of gingival recession.

BACKGROUND: A clinical classification of surface defects in gingival recession area is proposed. METHODS: Two factors were evaluated to set up a classification system: presence (A) or absence (B) of cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) and presence (+) or absence (-) of dental surface discrepancy caused by abrasion (step). Four classes (A+, A-, B+, and B-) were identified on the basis of these variables. To validate the classification three different calibrated examiners applied the proposed classification system to 46 gingival recessions and kappa statistics were performed. The classification was u

Rubber Dam Clamp May Cause Cortical Necrosis: A Case Report.

Tooth isolation methods used during endodontic procedures are necessary to create an aseptic field and protect the patient's alimentary tract from irrigation and instrument insult. This case details changes that can occur in mandibular cortical bone architecture after the use of a stainless steel rubber dam clamp during an endodontic procedure. A 22-year-old, otherwise healthy woman underwent nonsurgical root canal therapy on tooth #31 (mandibular right second molar, symptomatic irreversible pulpitis and periapical periodontitis.) Cone-beam computed tomographic imaging obtained between treatme

Recognition of bulimia nervosa in dental patients: implications for dental care providers.

Patients with bulimia nervosa commonly exhibit distinctive oral characteristics. Dental health providers should be able to recognize these signs and identify patients with this condition. Members of the dental health team then must intervene and assist in facilitating treatment of the eating disorder. Current knowledge about bulimia nervosa and its oral signs and preventive, interventive, and restorative strategies for dental health practitioners are presented.

Bulimia nervosa: dental perspectives.

Bulimia nervosa and bulimic behavior are among the most common eating disorders, affecting up to 13% of female college students. Most health professionals are aware of the compulsive overeating, self-induced vomiting, and laxative abuse associated with this disease; yet, only a small proportion of affected patients are ever diagnosed, generally only after years of abuse. Since the dental changes observed in most bulimics are recognizable and usually undeniable, the clinician should be aware of the oral and maxillofacial changes of this disease in order to arrive at an early diagnosis. Introspection of the Etiopathological Mechanisms Underlying Noncarious Cervical Lesions: Analysis of the Different Theories and Their Impact on the Mineralized Structures of the Tooth.

The noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs) recognize an etiological framework of onset very different from the carious processes with etiology whose bacteria aggregated in a biofilm play a predominant role, leading in this way to the loss of the mineralized structure of the tooth. The pathological picture of the NCCLs, which manifests itself with a clinical picture of dental wear, differs from caries because it mainly recognizes a series of pathological processes, such as erosion, through the action of generally acidic chemical agents and abrasion, which is basically expressed through repeated me

Sports Diet and Oral Health in Athletes: A Comprehensive Review.

Food and fluid supply is fundamental for optimal athletic performance but can also be a risk factor for caries, dental erosion, and periodontal diseases, which in turn can impair athletic performance. Many studies have reported a high prevalence of oral diseases in elite athletes, notably dental caries 20-84%, dental erosion 42-59%, gingivitis 58-77%, and periodontal disease 15-41%, caused by frequent consumption of sugars/carbohydrates, polyunsaturated fats, or deficient protein intake. There are three possible major reasons for poor oral health in athletes which are addressed in this review:

The Ways of Forming and the Erosion/Decay/Aging of Bioapatites in the Context of the Reversibility of Apatites.

This study primarily focused on the acid erosion of enamel and dentin. A detailed examination of the X-ray diffraction data proves that the products of the acid-caused decay of enamel belong to the family of isomorphic bioapatites, especially calcium-deficient hydroxyapatites. They are on a trajectory towards less and less crystallized substances. The increase in Bragg's parameter d and the decrease in the energy necessary for the changes were coupled with variability in the pH. This was valid for the corrosive action of acid solutions with a pH greater than 3.5. When the processes of natural

Biomineralization of dentin.

A single biomineralization of demineralized dentin is significant to restore the demineralized dentin due to dental caries or erosion. In recent years, meaningful progress has been made regarding the mechanisms involved in the biomineralization of dentin collagen. Concepts changing from the classical ion-based crystallization to non-classical particle-based crystallization, inspired a different strategy to infiltrate the demineralized dentin collagen. The remarkable discovery was the report of liquid-like amorphous calcium phosphate as nanoprecursor particles to carbonated hydroxyapatite. The
