The effect of nutritional status on the age distribution of dental caries in the primary teeth.

A cross-sectional study of dental caries in the primary teeth as a function of nutritional status was conducted on 1481 children one to 13 years old in Lima, Perú. Forty-one percent of the children were found to be chronically malnourished (stunted), 3% were acutely malnourished (wasted), and 5% were both stunted and wasted. A plot of decayed, extracted, and filled teeth (deft) vs. age resulted in a bell-shaped curve that was shifted to the right by 2.5 years for malnourished groups, compared with normal children (p less than 0.01). The shift to the right of the age distribution of caries was

Potentiometric stripping analysis of zinc and copper in human teeth and dental materials.

Potentiometric stripping analysis (PSA) with oxygen as the oxidant has been used to determine soluble zinc and copper levels in exfoliated human teeth (all of which required extraction for orthodontic reasons) and commercial dental materials. The soluble zinc and copper contents of teeth were slightly below the zinc and copper contents in whole teeth reported by other researchers, except in the case of tooth with removed amalgam filling. Soluble zinc and copper concentrations of the dental materials and metal ceramic crowns were 0.50-6.30, and of 2.00-4.30 microg/g, respectively. The results o

Dental effects of enzyme replacement therapy in case of childhood-type hypophosphatasia.

BACKGROUND: Hypophosphatasia (HPP), a skeletal disease characterized by hypomineralization of bone and teeth, is caused by an ALPL gene mutation that leads to low activity of the tissue non-specific alkaline phosphatase enzyme. Although enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) was recently introduced for affected patients, no known studies have been reported regarding its dental effects related to permanent teeth and jaw bones. In the present study, we examined the dental effects of ERT in a case of childhood-type hypophosphatasia, including panoramic radiography findings used to estimate the dental a

Maxillary incisor root resorption in relation to the ectopic canine: a review of 26 patients.

A retrospective study of 26 patients with maxillary incisor root resorption relating to the presence of an ectopic canine was undertaken from case records. The group consisted of nine male and 17 female patients with a mean age of 12.5 years. There was a total of 35 resorbed teeth, 26 lateral and nine central incisors, and these were related to 32 ectopic canines. The resorption tended to be extensive, 30 teeth had pulpal involvement. In two-thirds of cases the pattern of resorption involved both apical and middle thirds of the root. Despite the extensive nature of the involvement there were f

Loss of deciduous teeth--is timing important to the GDP?

UNLABELLED: On a daily basis, GDPs encounter patients with prematurely lost deciduous teeth or, conversely, deciduous teeth retained well past their accepted exfoliaton date. The timing of deciduous tooth loss impacts on many aspects of the developing occlusion. The aim of the article is both to describe this impact and also to set out guidelines which should assist the general dental practitioner in the decision of when to lose deciduous teeth. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The timing of deciduous tooth loss is an important concept which, when outside the normal pattern, may have adverse or beneficial

Microstructural Analysis of Carious Lesion Progression Beneath Hall Technique and Conventional Stainless-Steel Crowns in Children.

BACKGROUND: Stainless-steel crowns (SSC) are a common restorative option for preserving tooth tissue damaged by caries in primary molars. The Hall Technique (HT) is an SSC restorative approach using no local anaesthesia, tooth preparation or caries removal. AIM: To compare carious lesion progression, biomechanical and chemical properties in exfoliated primary molars treated with HT and conventional SSC. DESIGN: A descriptive laboratory study was conducted with teeth treated with HT SSC and conventional SSC (control). RESULTS: Radiographic lesion progression was observed in half of the sampl

Craniofacial, dental, and molecular features of Pyle disease in a South African child.

INTRODUCTION: Pyle Disease (PD), or familial metaphyseal dysplasia [OMIM 265900], is a rare autosomal recessive condition leading to widened metaphyses of long bones and cortical bone thinning and genu valgum. We detail the oro-dental and molecular findings in a South African patient with PD. METHODS: The patient underwent clinical, radiographic and molecular examinations. An exfoliated tooth was analysed using scanning electron microscopy and was compared to a control tooth. RESULTS: The patient presented with marked Erlenmeyer-flask deformity (EFD) of the long bones and several Wormian bon

The effect of facial growth, attrition, and age on the distance from the cementoenamel junction to the alveolar bone crest in the deciduous dentition.

The aim of this study was to describe the distances from the cementoenamel junction to the alveolar bone crest (CEJ-ABC) in the deciduous dentition and to relate them to age, facial, and tooth structure in 72 dry human skulls. Age correlated significantly with anterior face height (AntFH), the distance from condyle to gnathion (Co-Gn), lateral face height (LatFH), molar anatomic crown (MAC), and molar space (MS). The CEJ-ABC per skull and for the molars correlated with age, LatFH, AntFH, Co-Gn, MS, and MAC. The CEJ-ABC for the canines and the incisors correlated with age, LatFH, AntFH, and Co-

A new look at the etiology and pathogenesis of early-onset periodontitis. Cementopathia revisited.

For more than 20 years, investigators have unanimously agreed that human periodontitis is caused by bacterial colonization of the surfaces of the teeth and their extension apically. Recently, several investigators have demonstrated that most, if not all, individuals manifesting the early-onset, aggressive forms of periodontitis have abnormalities in their peripheral blood phagocytes which can be detected as abnormal cell motility or adherence. Because of the major role of these cells, especially the neutrophilic granulocytes, in host defense against the microbial onslaught at the gingival sulc

Full-Mouth Rehabilitation with Calvarium Bone Grafts and Dental Implants for a Papillon-Lefèvre Syndrome Patient: Case Report.

Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome (PLS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder of keratinization associated with palmoplantar keratoderma and severe periodontitis resulting in complete edentulism in late adolescence. The pathognomonic dental features of PLS are pathologic migration, hypermobility, and exfoliation of the teeth without any signs of root resorption. It has been suggested that an effective way to treat PLS patients presenting early in the disease progression is extraction of the erupted primary dentition or hopeless permanent teeth followed by antibiotic coverage with periodontal therapy

Rsk2, the Kinase Mutated in Coffin-Lowry Syndrome, Controls Cementum Formation.

The ribosomal S6 kinase RSK2 is essential for osteoblast function, and inactivating mutations of RSK2 cause osteopenia in humans with Coffin-Lowry syndrome (CLS). Alveolar bone loss and premature tooth exfoliation are also consistently reported symptoms in CLS patients; however, the pathophysiologic mechanisms are unclear. Therefore, aiming to identify the functional relevance of Rsk2 for tooth development, we analyzed Rsk2-deficient mice. Here, we show that Rsk2 is a critical regulator of cementoblast function. Immunohistochemistry, histology, micro-computed tomography imaging, quantitative b…

Comparative analysis of proliferation and differentiation potentials of stem cells from inflamed pulp of deciduous teeth and stem cells from exfoliated deciduous teeth.

Stem cells isolated from exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHEDs) are highly capable of proliferation and differentiation, and they represent good cell sources for mesenchymal stem cell- (MSC-) mediated dental tissue regeneration, but the supply of SHEDs is limited. A previous study found that stem cells could be isolated from inflamed tissues, but it is unknown whether primary dental pulp diagnosed with irreversible pulpitis might contain stem cells with appropriate tissue regeneration capacity. In this study, we aimed to isolate stem cells from both inflamed pulps of deciduous teeth (SCIDs) and SH

Root resorption of primary molars without successor teeth. An experimental study in the beagle dog.

Tooth agenesis is a common craniofacial congenital malformation in humans, but little is known about the mechanisms of root resorption in this condition. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanisms of root resorption in primary molars without successors. An animal model without permanent tooth germs was established by surgery in beagles. The times of onset of primary molar root resorption, with and without successors, were compared. The distribution of immune cells, odontoclasts, and their activating factors were determined by histochemistry and immunohistochemistry. Root resor

Agenesis of mandibular second premolars with retained primary molars: a longitudinal radiographic study of 99 subjects from 12 years of age to adulthood.

In subjects with agenesis of the second mandibular premolar teeth, the primary molar may be left in situ. The long-term prognosis of a retained primary molar has not been established in any study that included large number of patients. The aim of this investigation was to monitor the survival of retained mandibular second primary molars, from 12-13 years of age to adulthood. The material comprised the radiographs of 99 subjects, 37 males and 62 females, with retained primary molars and agenesis of 149 mandibular second premolars. In subjects with bilateral agenesis, only one randomly selected
