Surgical and orthodontic treatment after incidental radiographic discovery of a severely infraoccluded primary molar.

Dentoalveolar ankylosis, the fusion of a tooth with the alveolar bone, is often associated with primary molars and is the main cause of infraocclusion. This report describes an uncommon case of a severely infraoccluded primary first molar associated with loss of space in the maxilla. After anamnesis and a clinical examination, absence of the primary maxillary left first molar was observed. Periapical radiographs revealed a primary molar completely submerged under the gingiva. Cone beam computed tomography was performed to determine the proximity of the ankylosed tooth to the germ of the perman

[Post-natal development of tooth structures in Didelphis albiventris].

The post-natal development of tooth germs has been studied in the opossum or South American marsupial (Didelphis albiventris) between the 2nd and 10th week. Dentinogenesis starts around the 3rd week. The enamel which begins to appear at this stage is deposited until the 8th-10th week. At 10 weeks, the enamel enters the maturation phase. It is unlikely that enamel tubules in these marsupials have a cellular origin. No specific histochemical reaction predicts their appearance which is observed in the mature tooth. This fact suggests that their origin is related either to enamel maturation or to …

The genetic control of early tooth development.

Most vertebrate organs begin their initial formation by a common, developmentally conserved pattern of inductive tissue interactions between two tissues. The developing tooth germ is a prototype for such inductive tissue interactions and provides a powerful experimental system for elucidation of the genetic pathways involved in organogenesis. Members of the Msx homeobox gene family are expressed at sites of epithelial-mesenchymal interaction during embryogenesis, including the tooth. The important role that Msx genes play in tooth development is exemplified by mice lacking Msx gene function. M…

Endodontic and esthetic management of a dilacerated maxillary central incisor having two root canals using cone beam computed tomography as a diagnostic aid.

Traumatic injuries to the primary dentition are quite common. When primary teeth are subjected to trauma, force transmission and/or invasion of the underlying tooth germs lying in close proximity can result in a variety of disturbances in the permanent successors. Few of these disturbances include hypoplasia, dilaceration, or alteration in the eruption sequence and pattern. Dilaceration is defined as an angulation or sharp bend or curve in the linear relationship of the crown of a tooth to its root. A rare case of maxillary left central incisor having crown dilaceration and Vertucci's type II …

Establishment of a human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) line (JUCTCi018-A) from a patient with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2EE (CMT2EE) due to a homozygous c.122G > A p.(Arg41Gln) mutation in the MPV17 gene.

(Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) is a genetic disorder affecting peripheral nerves. The human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) line JUCTCi018-A was created using dermal fibroblasts from a Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 2EE (CMT2EE) patient with a homozygous missense mutation in the MPV17 gene (c. 122G > A, p.Arg41Gln). These fibroblasts were reprogrammed using Sendai viruses that encoded OCT4, SOX2, KLF4, and c-MYC reprogramming factors. The iPSCs demonstrated normal morphology and karyotype, expressed pluripotency markers, and the ability to differentiate into the three germ layers. T

ATYPICAL DISLOCATION OF IMPACTED PERMANENT TEETH IN CHILDREN. OWN EXPERIENCE.

INTRODUCTION: Disturbances in forming of the hard tissue of teeth and bones can be a cause of their malformation and translocation. The impact of permanent teeth is one of them. It can occur with translocation of the tooth germ. The aim of the study was to present an atypical translocation of impacted permanent teeth in children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 3.5 year clinical observation was carried out in 14 children (5 girls and 9 boys), aged between 9 and 12 years old. Patients were referred to our Department by orthodontists, paedodontists and General Dental Practitioners, due to impacted perman…

Localization and quantitation of 125I-epidermal growth factor binding in mouse embryonic tooth and other embryonic tissues at different developmental stages.

We have shown earlier that epidermal growth factor (EGF) inhibits morphogenesis and cell differentiation in mouse embryonic teeth in organ culture. This inhibition depends on the stage of tooth development so that only teeth at early developmental stages respond to EGF (A-M. Partanen, P. Ekblom, and I. Thesleff (1985) Dev. Biol. 111, 84-94). We have now studied the quantity and pattern of EGF binding in teeth at various stages of development by incubating the dissected tooth germs with 125I-labeled EGF. Although the quantity of 125I-EGF binding per microgram DNA stays at the same level, locali…

Case Report: Endodontic management of a fused maxillary lateral incisor and canine with split.

BACKGROUND: Dental fusion, characterized by the joining of two neighboring tooth germs during odontogenesis, is an uncommon condition affecting approximately 0.1% of the permanent dentition. The unusual anatomy of the pulp chamber and the unpredictable root canal system pose significant challenges during endodontic treatment. CASE REPORT: A 47-year-old female patient presented with a 6-month history of spontaneous nocturnal pain in the upper left anterior region. Clinical examination revealed a solitary tooth occupying the positions of teeth 22 and 23; the tooth had a buccal groove and severe…

Microradiographic aspects of the growing mandibular body during permanent premolar eruption in the dog.

In order to explore the bony changes in the mandibular body during prefunctional intraosseous eruption of premolars, 18 dogs aged from 8 to 16 wk at the beginning of experimental period, were given two intraperitoneal injections of oxytetracycline (50 mg/kg and 35 mg/kg 2 wk later) and 2 wk later a final injection of Alizarin red S (70 mg/kg). Microradiographic and fluorescent light microscopy studies showed that changes of the alveolar bony crypt walls were influenced by the growing dental germs which they surrounded. The cervical volumetric reduction, which indicates the end of crown formati

[Microsymptoms as an indication for familial hypodontia, hyperdontia and tooth displacement].

Hitherto several micromanifestations could be recognized as signals of pathognomic etiological factors indicative of aplasia, or, better, as disposition to disorders of the odontogenetic organs. Such microsymptoms are reduction of size, especially observed in upper lateral incisors (peg-shaped teeth), delayed mineralization, and dystopia of tooth-germs. Our findings suggest that many further phenomena belong to the same group of micromanifestations such as supernumerary teeth, either of typical or atypical shape (mesiodentes), supernumerary cusps and roots, gemination and fusion of teeth, infr

Fused tooth: clinical approach to endodontic treatment.

Tooth fusion, the union of 2 developing dental germs, can affect the primary and permanent dentitions as well as supernumerary teeth. The anatomy of fused teeth represents a challenge when endodontic treatment is needed. This case report describes the endodontic treatment performed in a permanent maxillary incisor fused to a supernumerary tooth. A 10-year-old girl was referred for endodontic treatment in her maxillary left central incisor, which displayed a wide and bifid crown. Periapical radiographs showed that the tooth had 2 crowns with fused roots; the pulp chambers of the crowns communic

[A stratified framework for normal control tissue selection in ameloblastoma research].

Ameloblastoma is a locally invasive benign tumor of odontogenic epithelial origin. Research into its molecular mechanisms is hindered by the lack of unified norms for normal control tissue selection, which undermines data comparability. Current studies employ highly heterogeneous control tissues, including tooth germs, pericoronal tissue, normal oral mucosa and even commercial samples, thereby complicating data integration and potentially affecting the accurate interpretation of disease mechanisms. Based on principles of tooth development and the concept of "developmental arrest" in ameloblast…

Microdont Developing Outside the Alveolar Process and Within Oral Diffuse and Plexiform Neurofibroma in Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Numerical aberrations of permanent dentition and dystopic tooth eruption are part of the phenotype of the tumor predisposition syndrome neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). In these cases, surplus tooth germs usually develop in the alveolar processes of the jaw. This report attests to the dystopic development of a dysplastic supernumerary tooth in NF1 arising outside the jaw. CASE REPORT: The 8-year-old male patient developed a microdont outside the bone and above the occlusal plane of the retained maxillary right second molar. The supernumerary tooth was completely embedded in ora…

Influence of aging on tooth eruption: experimental canine mandibular allograft.

PURPOSE: Aging is clinically related to tooth eruption; however, there are no known studies that have elucidated the relationship. We examined whether tooth eruption would occur normally in a mature subject. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using vascularized composite tissue mandibular transplantation, we extracted portions of immature mandibles including the tooth germs from young beagle dogs and placed them into unrelated immature and mature beagle dogs. We then examined eruption of the lower first molar in the grafted mandibular bone and compared the results clinically, radiographically, and histol…

Establishing protein expression profiles involved in tooth development using a proteomic approach.

Various growth and transcription factors are involved in tooth development and developmental abnormalities; however, the protein dynamics do not always match the mRNA expression level. Using a proteomic approach, this study comprehensively analyzed protein expression in epithelial and mesenchymal tissues of the tooth germ during development. First molar tooth germs from embryonic day 14 and 16 Crlj:CD1 (ICR) mouse embryos were collected and separated into epithelial and mesenchymal tissues by laser microdissection. Mass spectrometry of the resulting proteins was carried out, and three types of…
