Analyzing risk factors for post-traumatic stress disorder among emergency-room nurses and development of a prediction model.

BackgroundEmergency nurses, working in high-pressure and stressful environments, often face sudden traumatic events such as critical patient resuscitation and accident scene management. Prolonged exposure to these stressors can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Identifying and analyzing the associated risk factors and developing an effective predictive model can provide a scientific basis for early intervention and psychological support, thereby improving the psychological resilience and work efficiency of emergency nurses.ObjectiveWe analyzed the risk factors for PTSD among emerg

Part 2: Birth trauma: injuries to the intraabdominal organs, peripheral nerves, and skeletal system.

Part 1 of this 2-part article, "Early Recognition and Treatment of Birth Trauma: Injuries to the Head and Face" provided readers with basic concepts related to birth trauma to the head and face. Part 2 focuses on the pathophysiology, etiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of birth injuries to the intraabdominal organs, the peripheral nerves, the spinal cord, and the skeletal system. Risk factors for birth injury to these areas are discussed along with key issues related to the nursing care of affected infants.

Beneath the Surface: A Closer Look at Petechiae in Pediatric Submersion Injuries.

Pediatric fatalities present multifaceted clinical and forensic complexities requiring both clinical acumen and trauma-informed vigilance. This case study examines a school-aged child who arrived at a Level I trauma center following a reported accidental drowning. Despite prompt resuscitative efforts, the child was pronounced deceased. While no external trauma was noted, scattered nonblanching petechiae on the face, eyelids, and conjunctiva raised concerns. Toxicology results were negative, and no forensic nursing consultation was initiated. The child's death was classified as accidental witho

"If Ever a Wreck Came Back from Overseas She Was One": The Treatment and Pensioning of Psychologically Traumatized Nursing Sisters after the First World War.

During the First World War, 2845 women served as nursing sisters with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. After the war, some women developed nervous and mental conditions that they said were caused by their wartime service and applied for military pensions and treatment. So how were these women treated by doctors and pension boards? Men who suffered from psychological trauma were frequently labelled as "cowards" or "malingerers." Many of the symptoms typically associated with nervous cases, such as hysteria, were viewed as inherently feminine at the time but we know little about how this criter

Presentation and Management Outcomes of Corneal and Scleral Perforations in Geriatric Nursing Home Residents.

We compared the clinical presentation and treatment outcomes of corneal and scleral perforations in geriatric nursing home residents, geriatric community residents, and non-geriatric population. The medical records of patients who were treated for corneal and scleral perforations at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong between January 1, 2004 and May 1, 2013, were reviewed retrospectively. Of 144 cases, 53 (37%) occurred in the geriatric population, of which 16 (11%) lived in nursing homes, and 37 (26%) were community residents. There were 91 (63%) patients in the non-geriatric group. A-TEAM: An Interprofessional Approach to Mandated Reporting in the Hospital Setting.

Reporting suspected child maltreatment in pediatric settings presents unique challenges. Variation in mandated reporter training may lead to discomfort and emotional dysregulation. Failure to collaborate inter-professionally potentially results in suboptimal care for vulnerable children and families. A-TEAM promotes awareness, transparency, empathy, a nonjudgmental strategy, and management by an interprofessional team when referring patients for child protective services evaluation. A faculty trained in pediatric trauma nursing led the development of A-TEAM. Integrating nursing and social work…

Sustained Reduction of Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia Through a Structured Interdisciplinary Quality Improvement Strategy.

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a source of morbidity and mortality among critical care patients, particularly in trauma and burn. In 2022, our hospital identified a high incidence of VAP. This prompted a comprehensive evaluation and implementation of targeted interventions to improve outcomes in ventilated patients. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of a multifaceted strategy for VAP prevention by assessing its effectiveness in reducing VAP incidence through consistent application of evidence-based interventions. This pre- and post-quality improvement study was c

Predictors of Dependency in Geriatric Trauma Patients with Rib Fractures: A Population Study.

The geriatric trauma population is unique. These patients are at risk of being discharged to rehabilitation or a skilled nursing facility, instead of being returned to their homes, placing a significant burden on both the patient families and society. This study evaluated which patient characteristics increase the likelihood of a previously independent geriatric blunt trauma becoming functionally dependent and being discharged to a location other than home. Data were extracted from the National Trauma Data Bank from 2012 to 2014 for blunt trauma patients ≥65 years old, admitted from home, with

More and more higher development of civilisation causes constant lengthening of life in humans. Changes, which occur during growing old of organism predispose to increased risk of trauma. Financial cost of medical treatment of injuries in elderly are higher and higher. Degenerative disease of joints, osteoporosis, earlier body injuries and co-existing other diseases are important risk factors of trauma. Deficiencies of eyesight, hearing and prolonged time reaction are other strengthening risk of trauma. Falls and motor-vehicle accidents are the most frequent causes of trauma in elderly. Distal

Use of lubricant in female urethral catheterization.

Urethral catheterization is a commonly undertaken nursing procedure, with up to 12.6% of hospitalized and 4% of community patients having indwelling urethral catheters (Rew and Woodward, 2001). It is well known that this is often a procedure that can cause physical trauma to the urethra and can be painful for the patient and a recent systematic review identified that urethral trauma and discomfort could be minimized by using a sterile-use lubricant or anaesthetic gel (Department of Health, 2001). This article will consider the use of lubricants for female urethral catheterization.

Identifying facilitators and barriers to using trauma-informed care at a level 1 trauma center.

Millions of individuals sustain traumatic injuries each year, yet the emotional impact of hospitalization and acute medical care remains understudied. Trauma-informed care (TIC) offers a framework for reducing retraumatization and supporting both patients and providers, but little is known about how TIC is understood or applied in trauma centers. This qualitative study used a human-centered design approach to examine healthcare workers' experiences, perceptions, and training needs related to TIC within a Level 1 trauma center to inform development of a training on TIC. This study employed a qu

Nursing Faculty Professional Quality of Life and Resilience in a Changing Educational Environment.

BACKGROUND: Growing workload demands of nursing faculty has led to an academic work environment that is stressful with loss of work life balance and occupational burnout. METHOD: Full-time faculty were surveyed prior to the pandemic at a private school of nursing using the Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL), Bride Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale (STSS), Conner-Davidson Resilience-10 (CDRS-10), and Trauma Informed Climate Scale (TICS-10). RESULTS: The ProQOL revealed moderate faculty burnout scores (mean score, 25.8). The STSS identified two thirds of faculty experienced secondary traumat

Regional Anesthesia and Analgesia for Acute Trauma Patients.

Regional anesthesia for the acute trauma patient is increasing due to the growing appreciation of its benefits, development of newer techniques and equipment, and more robust training. Block procedures are expanding beyond perioperative interventions performed exclusively by anesthesiologists to paramedics on scene, emergency medicine physicians, and nurse-led services using these techniques early in trauma pain management. Special considerations and indications apply to trauma victims compared with the elective patient and must be appreciated to optimize safety and clinical outcomes. This rev

Pushing through: A grounded theory of undergraduate nursing students making meaning of clinical-related critical incidents.

BACKGROUND: Undergraduate nursing students are at risk of exposure to clinical related critical incidents. The impact on nursing students and the use of coping mechanisms and processes to make meaning of these distressing experiences are poorly understood. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to provide a theoretical understanding of the processes that undergraduate nursing students use to make meaning of clinical related critical incidents. METHOD: Following the constructivist grounded theory method, a purposive sample was used to recruit 15 students enrolled in a Canadian university baccalau

Understanding the outcomes of a home nursing programme for patients with epidermolysis bullosa: an Australian perspective.

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) consists of a spectrum of genodermatoses characterised by skin fragility and various degrees of skin and mucous membrane blistering. Minimal trauma and friction can cause extensive blistering in patients with EB, resulting in a number of complications. However, wound management is the main challenge for these patients because of a high risk of infection, fluid loss and potential development of aggressive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Indeed, patients with EB have an increased risk for developing skin cancers compared to the general population. In 2012, a home nursin

The Journey From Being in a Mental Prison to Disclosure and Freedom: Experiences of Male Child Sexual Abuse Survivors.

BACKGROUND: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) has enduring effects on survivors' long-term physical, mental and social health, but is a neglected field within nursing. Research indicates that nurses are often underprepared for meeting survivors and may unwittingly contribute to their feelings of re-shaming. METHODS: Through 14 in-depth interviews, this phenomenological study explored the experiences of seven Icelandic male CSA survivors, aged 30 to 55, all of whom had endured repeated childhood sexual violence. FINDINGS: The survivors experienced complex trauma in their childhood because of the s
