[Comparative characteristics of the ultrasound signs of tissue injuries of the upper extremities in varying degrees of thermal burns].

The results of ultrasound study of upper extremity tissues were comparatively analyzed in 74 patients with varying degrees of thermal burns. All the victims had thermal burns of the shoulder, forearm, and hand of one or both arms; the injured and contralateral normal areas were comparatively analyzed. The analysis of the findings has revealed that thermal burns of the upper extremities show certain ultrasound symptoms of soft tissue injuries that are indicative of the specific features of changes in the postburn period in relation to the degree of the injury - the duration of detection of edem

Interobserver and intraobserver variations in tibial pilon fracture classification systems.

BACKGROUND: Tibial pilon injuries are a complex group of fractures, whose classification and radiological assessment has been under constant reform. Till date, there is no universally accepted classification system. OBJECTIVE: To determine the interobserver agreement and intraobserver reproducibility of Ruedi and Allgower, AO, and Topliss et al. classification systems for tibial pilon fractures, with CT scans. METHOD: Forty-seven CT scans of tibial pilon fractures were evaluated independently by 5 orthopaedic surgeons. Fractures were classified according to Ruedi and Allgower, AO and Topliss

Classical and modern classifications of luxations and fractures of thoracolumbar spine. Biomechanical and clinical aspects. Review of literature.

The authors present the advantages and disadvantages of the Denis and AO classifications based on a review of classical and recent literature concerning the evolution of classification of thoracolumbar spine conditions. The newest classification of fractures proposed by Vaccaro (TLICS - Thoracolumbar Injury Classification Severity Score) is discussed in detail. Special attention is given to instability in these fractures. The principles of modern operative treatment are briefly discussed. Short transpedicular segmental stabilization and immobilization is a commonly accepted approach in unstabl

Concussion in professional football: epidemiological features of game injuries and review of the literature--part 3.

OBJECTIVE: A 6-year study was performed to determine the circumstances, causes, and outcomes of concussions in the National Football League. METHODS: Between 1996 and 2001, the epidemiological features of concussions were recorded by National Football League teams with a standardized reporting form. Symptoms were reported and grouped as general symptoms, cranial nerve symptoms, memory or cognitive problems, somatic complaints, and loss of consciousness. The medical actions taken were recorded. In total, 787 game-related cases were reported, with information on the players involved, type of he

Injury Severity Score versus New Injury Severity Score for penetrating injuries.

INTRODUCTION: The New Injury Severity Score (NISS) was introduced in 1997 to improve outcome prediction based on anatomical severity scoring in trauma victims. Studies on populations of blunt trauma victims indicate that the NISS, predicts better than the Injury Severity Score (ISS) mortality post-injury, which is why the NISS has been recommended as the new "gold standard" for severity scoring. However, so far the accuracy of the NISS for penetrating injuries has not been validated against the ISS. METHODS: ISS and NISS scores were collected retrospectively for 1,787 war- and landmine victim

Extrahepatic bile ducts injury: a report on 14 cases.

Traumatic injuries of the extrahepatic biliary tract are infrequent, occurring in approximately 0.5% of all patients with blunt and penetrating abdominal trauma. The incidence of this injury due to blunt abdominal trauma is rare. This study reviewed patients with injuries of the extrahepatic biliary tract due to abdominal trauma over a 6-year period to determine the incidence, trauma scores, associated injuries, surgical treatment performed, complications and mortality rate. We report our experience with 14 patients with extrahepatic biliary tract trauma. A review of the literature and the dis

Chest wall velocity as a predictor of nonauditory blast injury in a complex wave environment.

Previous blast injury prediction criteria have been based on exposure to classic Friedlander or ideal blast waves. An ideal waveform is characterized by an instantaneous rise to a peak overpressure that decays exponentially to ambient pressure followed by a negative phase. The prediction criteria did not address injuries resulting from exposure to complex blast waves. It was difficult to establish a simple relationship between the two because complex blast waves typically consist of multiple shocks with variable frequency content and intensity that may be superimposed on a slow rising quasista

Structural equation modeling of the effect of childhood trauma on premenstrual syndrome: the mediating role of rumination in adolescent girls.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a common adolescent disorder characterized by emotional, behavioral, and physical symptoms that impair quality of life. Psychological factors, particularly childhood trauma, may influence PMS severity. This study examined the associations between childhood trauma and PMS, with rumination as a potential mediating variable, using structural equation modeling (SEM). A descriptive-analytical SEM design was conducted with 384 high school girls in Saqqez, Iran (2023-2024), selected via multistage cluster sampling. Data were collected using the Childhood Trauma Question

Validation of the Sonographic Ottawa Foot and Ankle Rules (SOFAR) Study in a Large Urban Trauma Center.

INTRODUCTION: Differentiating the severity of acute ankle injuries is a common problem in the emergency department (ED). The Ottawa Foot and Ankle Rules (OFAR) were designed to obviate the need for unnecessary x-rays. Although these rules have been determined to be very sensitive, they lack the specificity necessary to make them practically useful for a condition in which a misdiagnosis could result in a significant disability. Our study objective was to determine if the addition of a bedside ultrasound (US) to the evaluation process could be used to significantly reduce the number of negative

Expanding Hematoma's Life-Threatening Neck and Face Emergency Management of Ballistic Injuries.

This article aims to bring attention to the morbidity and fatality of hemorrhage, how expanding hematoma and air compromise neck/face N/F injuries and present challenges. Large neck vessel ballistic injuries may lead to hemorrhage and expanding hematoma, resulting in airway compromise, due to injuries to the internal and/or external carotid arteries, internal jugular veins "internal carotid artery, external carotid artery, internal jugular vein," and the external carotid artery deep branches. This also leads to injuries to the cervical fascial layers (barriers of deep spaces) that facilitate p

Rhabdomyolysis and unilateral renal infarction after a motor vehicle crash.

A 46-year-old man with no previous history of abnormal urinalysis findings or renal dysfunction was admitted to a local hospital because of a motor vehicle crash. An open laparotomy was performed to treat a perforation of the small intestine. After operation, oliguria and renal dysfunction developed, and he was admitted to our hospital because of acute renal failure after trauma. Acute renal failure was assumed to be due to rhabdomyolysis with elevated serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, and creatine kinase levels and myoglobinemia. Left flank pain occurred several days after admission, and

Olfactory dysfunction in head injured workers.

Olfactory dysfunction following trauma has been widely reported and is currently compensable according to existing American Medical Association guidelines when it occurs in the occupational setting. Its presence and the risk factors for its development, however, have not been clearly delineated in occupationally head injured workers. In order to assess this phenomenon, a series of 365 consecutive head injured workers from 1993-1997 was assessed in order to determine the incidence of post-traumatic olfactory dysfunction and its association with the severity of the head injury, the mechanism of
