The identification of the motor nuclei innervating the tongue muscles in the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos); an HRP study.

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) histochemistry was used to identify the motoneurons innervating the tongue muscles in the mallard. Four nuclei are involved: the intermediate motor nucleus of N.VII innervating the stylohyoid, serpihyoid and ceratohyoid muscles, the retrofacial nucleus of N.IX innervating the m. geniohyoideus and the n. intermedius or motor nucleus of N.XII that innervates the mm. ceratoglossus and hyoglossus anterior and obliquus. The m. intermandibularis is innervated by a trigeminal motor subnucleus. There is no clear intranuclear organization. The results are summarized in Tabl

3-dimensional computer graphics model elucidating involvement of intraparenchymal venous malformation in trigeminal nucleus of brachium pontis with intractable trigeminal neuralgia.

Venous malformation (VM) in the posterior cranial fossa occasionally cause trigeminal neuralgia (TN), which were treated with microvascular decompression of its drainer, whereas it was effective only in the limited cases, and its pathological mechanism causing TN is controversial. A 72-year-old man had a 20-year history of typical but severe TN in his left face. Without radiographic evidence of vascular compression on the root entry zone (REZ) of the trigeminal nerve, he underwent stereotactic radiosurgery in previous hospital, resulting in only temporary improvement. On T1-wighted magnetic re

The effect of microvascular decompression in patients with multiple sclerosis and trigeminal neuralgia.

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) is thought to be caused by demyelinating plaques within the nerve root entry zone, the trigeminal nucleus, or the trigeminal tracts. OBJECTIVE: To review our experience of microvascular decompression (MVD) in patients with MS and symptomatic TN. METHODS: All first-time MVDs for symptomatic trigeminal neuralgia in patients with MS performed by the senior author during an 8-year period (1999-2007) in this department were reviewed. The preoperative pain components were differentiated as being 100% episodic pain, > 50

Excitatory effects of hypocretin-1 (orexin-A) in the trigeminal motor nucleus are reversed by NMDA antagonism.

Hypocretin-1 and -2 (Hcrt-1 and -2, also called orexin-A and -B) are newly identified neuropeptides synthesized by hypothalamic neurons. Defects in the Hcrt system underlie the sleep disorder narcolepsy, which is characterized by sleep fragmentation and the involuntary loss of muscle tone called cataplexy. Hcrt neurons project to multiple brain regions including cranial and spinal motor nuclei. In vitro studies suggest that Hcrt application can modulate presynaptic glutamate release. Together these observations suggest that Hcrt can affect motor output and that glutamatergic processes may be i

Trigeminal neuralgia.

Two different clinical entities, essential or secondary neuralgia, are associated with different pathologies. The pathways of CN V comprise the cervical spine, the brainstem, the root of the nerve and the three peripheral branches: V1, V2 and V3. The lesions responsible for neuralgia are neoplastic, vascular, inflammatory, malformative or post-traumatic. The examination protocol should explore the set of CN V pathways. Neurovascular compression is the main cause of essential neuralgia. It is investigated by T2-weighted inframillimetric volume. Two conditions are necessary to diagnose a neurova

Vibrissae tactile stimulation: (14C) 2-deoxyglucose uptake in rat brainstem, thalamus, and cortex.

The right mystacial vibrissae of awake, adult rats were stroked at 4-6 times/second and brain regions which increased (14C) 2-deoxyglucose (2DG) uptake were mapped autoradiographically. The ventral parts of the ipsilateral spinal trigeminal nuclei pars caudalis (Sp5c), pars interpolaris (Sp5i), pars oralis (Sp5o), and the principal trigeminal sensory (Pr5) nuclei were activated. The lateral part of the ipsilateral facial (VII) nucleus (the region which innervates the vibrissae muscles) was also activated possibly via excitatory, trigeminal (Sp5c, Sp5i, Sp5o, Pr5) sensory afferents. A number of…

Evolutionary patterns of cranial nerve efferent nuclei in vertebrates.

All vertebrates have a similar series of rhombomeric hindbrain segments within which cranial nerve efferent nuclei are distributed in a similar rostrocaudal sequence. The registration between these two morphological patterns is reviewed here to highlight the conserved vs. variable aspects of hindbrain organization contributing to diversification of efferent sub-nuclei. Recent studies of segmental origins and migrations of branchiomotor, visceromotor and octavolateral efferent neurons revealed more segmental similarities than differences among vertebrates. Nonetheless, discrete variations exist

Autoradiographic localization of muscarinic cholinergic receptors in rat brainstem.

We have localized muscarinic cholinergic receptors in the rat brainstem by a light microscopic autoradiographic method. Initially, we examined the kinetics and specificity of the binding of radiolabeled quinuclidinyl benzilate ([3H]QNB) in slide-mounted, frozen tissue sections to determine that we were labeling the muscarinic cholinergic receptors as they had been described previously in biochemical pharmacological studies. Subsequently, using optimal binding parameters to obtain high specific to nonspecific ratios, we labeled tissue sections and generated autoradiograms by the apposition of e

The cerebellum engages multiple pre-motor pathways through a divergent-convergent architecture to shape whisker dynamics.

The cerebellar output can trigger whisker movement through indirect projections that pass via several brainstem pre-motor nuclei before reaching the facial nucleus, which directly controls whisker movements in rodents. Although the central pattern generator function of the intermediate reticular formation has been recently clarified, the roles of the other whisker pre-motor nuclei remain unclear. Here, we set out to compare the whisker movement kinematics of the main pre-motor whisker nuclei connecting the cerebellum and the facial nucleus. We optogenetically stimulated neurons located in the

Characterization of direct Purkinje cell outputs to the brainstem.

Purkinje cells (PCs) primarily project to cerebellar nuclei but also directly innervate the brainstem. Some PC-brainstem projections have been described previously, but most have not been thoroughly characterized. Here, we use a PC-specific cre line to anatomically and electrophysiologically characterize PC projections to the brainstem. PC synapses are surprisingly widespread, with the highest densities found in the vestibular and parabrachial nuclei. However, there are pronounced regional differences in synaptic densities within both the vestibular and parabrachial nuclei. Large optogenetical

Persistent c-fos expression and NADPH-d reactivity in the medulla and the lumbar spinal cord in rat with short-term peripheral anosmia.

Here we examine hypothesis that short-term peripheral ZnSO(4)-induced anosmia can produce effects on c-fos expression within spinal cord and … os expression in ventral horn (layers 7 and 8), ventrolateral segment and dorsal part of the spinal trigeminal nuclei. In anosmic rats varicose fibres and numerous NADPH-d-stained neurons were present in the gelatinous layer of the spinal trigeminal nucleus caudalis, and a separate population of Fos-positive cells was detected within this layer. Reduced insula habituation associated with amplification of trigeminal brainstem input in migraine.

Background Impaired sensory processing in migraine can reflect diminished habituation, increased activation, or even increased gain or amplification of activity from the primary synapse in the brainstem to higher cortical/subcortical brain regions. Methods We scanned 16 episodic migraine (interictal) and 16 healthy controls (cross-sectional study), and evaluated brain response to innocuous air-puff stimulation over the right forehead in the ophthalmic nerve (V1) trigeminal territory. We further evaluated habituation, and cortical/subcortical amplification relative to spinal trigeminal nucleus

CNS cell groups projecting to the submandibular parasympathetic preganglionic neurons in the rat: a retrograde transneuronal viral cell body labeling study.

The retrograde transneuronal viral tracing method was used to study the CNS nuclei that innervate the parasympathetic preganglionic neurons controlling the submandibular gland in the rat. A genetically engineered beta-galactosidase expressing Bartha strain of pseudorabies virus (PRV) was injected into the submandibular gland of rats. After 4 days, PRV infected tissues were reacted with the Bluo-Gal substrate (halogenated indolyl-beta-D-galactoside) and labeled cell bodies were identified throughout the brain. In the medulla oblongata, cell body labeling was seen in the superior salivatory nucl

Anatomy of Trigeminal Neuromodulation Targets: From Periphery to the Brain.

The trigeminal nerve complex is a very important and somewhat unique component of the nervous system. It is responsible for the sensory signals that arise from the most part of the face, mouth, nose, meninges, and facial muscles, and also for the motor commands carried to the masticatory muscles. These signals travel through a very complex set of structures: dermal receptors, trigeminal branches, Gasserian ganglion, central nuclei, and thalamus, finally reaching the cerebral cortex. Other neural structures participate, directly or indirectly, in the transmission and modulation of the signals,

Macaque monkey trigeminal blink reflex circuits targeting levator palpebrae superioris motoneurons.

For normal viewing, the eyes are held open by the tonic actions of the levator palpebrae superioris (levator) muscle raising the upper eyelid. This activity is interrupted during blinks, when the eyelid sweeps down to spread the tear film or protect the cornea. We examined the circuit connecting the principal trigeminal nucleus to the levator motoneurons by use of both anterograde and retrograde tracers in macaque monkeys. Injections of anterograde tracer were made into the principal trigeminal nucleus using either a stereotaxic approach or localization following physiological characterization

Peripheral and central mechanisms of orofacial inflammatory pain.

Many orofacial pain conditions involve inflammation of orofacial tissues and they range from acute pulpitis (toothache) and mucositis to chronic arthritic conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). This article reviews the peripheral and central neural mechanisms involved in orofacial inflammatory pain states, including the integral role that peripheral and central sensitization play in the pain features that characterize these states. It also outlines the recent evidence for the contribution of non-neural processes, especially those involving glial cells.

Impact of intertrigeminal region AMPA receptor blockade on respiratory responses in rats.

We hypothesized that functional glutamatergic AMPA receptors are expressed in the intertrigeminal region (ITR) of the lateral pons, and that blockade of these receptors by a specific AMPA receptor antagonist (NBQX) would alter respiratory responses both to ITR glutamate injections as well as to vagally mediated reflex apnea induced by intravenous infusion of serotonin. Non-selective blockade of ITR glutamate receptors using kynurenic acid previously was shown to alter both of these respiratory responses. Unilateral ITR injections in 19 anaesthetized spontaneously breathing adult Sprague-Dawley
