Ocular inflammatory disease and ocular tuberculosis in a cohort of patients co-infected with HIV and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in Mumbai, India: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence and the patterns of ocular inflammatory disease and ocular tuberculosis (TB) are largely undocumented among Multidrug Resistant TB (MDR-TB) patients co-infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and on antituberculosis and antiretroviral therapy (ART). METHODS: Lilavati Hospital and Research Center and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) organized a cross-sectional ophthalmological evaluation of HIV/MDR-TB co-infected patients followed in an MSF-run HIV-clinic in Mumbai, India, which included measuring visual acuity, and slit lamp and dilated fundus examinations.

Antigen-Specific Intraocular Cytokine Responses Distinguish Ocular Tuberculosis From Undifferentiated Uveitis in Tuberculosis-Immunoreactive Patients.

PURPOSE: To compare antigen-specific intraocular immune responses between different clinical phenotypes of tuberculin skin test (TST)-positive and TST-negative uveitis. DESIGN: Single center, retrospective cross-sectional study. METHODS: Patients requiring diagnostic or therapeutic vitrectomy for the management of intraocular inflammation were divided into 3 groups based on Standardization of Uveitis Nomenclature (SUN) classification criteria for tubercular uveitis. Group 1 included patients with ocular tuberculosis (OTB; n = 23) who were TST-positive patients, met the SUN criteria, and/or h

Tubercular DNA PCR of ocular fluids and blood in cases of presumed ocular tuberculosis: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The definitive diagnosing of ocular tuberculosis (TB) is difficult; therefore, there is a need of better understanding of investigating TB DNA in presumed ocular TB patients. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to correlate tubercular DNA PCR of aqueous/vitreous and blood in cases of presumed ocular TB. DESIGN: A prospective study. METHODS: DNA was extracted from aqueous of cases of choroidal tuberculoma (group 1) and serpiginous choroiditis (group 2) and from vitreous of cases of vasculitis (group 3) and macular hole/retinal detachment (group 4). Gel-based PCR and real-time PC

Progressive ocular inflammation following anti-tubercular therapy for presumed ocular tuberculosis in a high-endemic setting.

PURPOSE: To analyze the incidence and clinical course of patients developing progressive ocular inflammation following anti-tubercular therapy (ATT) for presumed ocular tuberculosis (TB). METHODS: Retrospective analysis of medical records of patients who received ATT for presumed ocular TB and completed at least 12 months follow-up after initiation of ATT. The diagnosis of presumed ocular TB was based on presence of ocular signs suggestive of TB, evidence of past tubercular infection, and exclusion of mimicking clinical entities. All patients received a combination of ATT and corticosteroid t

Could different aqueous humor and plasma cytokine profiles help differentiate between ocular sarcoidosis and ocular tuberculosis?

OBJECTIVE AND DESIGN: A cross-sectional single-center study was conducted to assess cytokine levels in aqueous humor (AH) and plasma of three different uveitis entities: definite ocular sarcoidosis (OS), definite OS associated with QuantiFERON®-TB Gold test positivity (Q + OS) and presumed tubercular uveitis (TBU). SUBJECTS: Thirty-two patients (15 OS, 5 Q + OS, 12 TBU) were included. METHODS: Quantification of selected cytokines was performed on blood and AH samples collected before starting any treatment. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Kruskal-Wallis test, the Mann-Whitney or

Unilateral Pigmented Paravenous Retinochoroidal Atrophy Associated With Presumed Ocular Tuberculosis.

This report describes a case of unilateral pigmented paravenous retinochoroidal atrophy (PPRCA) in a patient with low-grade unilateral intermediate uveitis. A 31-year-old woman, previously diagnosed with intermediate uveitis in the right eye (OD) presented to the clinic. Best-corrected visual acuity was 20/20 OD. Fundus examination, fluorescein angiography, autofluorescence, and optical coherence tomography OD were in keeping with a phenotypic diagnosis of PPRCA. Electrophysiology showed severe photoreceptor dysfunction of both the rod and the cone systems OD. Systemic workup revealed QuantiFE

Ocular tuberculosis in Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia - A case series.

INTRODUCTION: Ocular tuberculosis (TB) encompasses a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations affecting different structures of the eye. It is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a great ancient organism that induces various types of diseases and unfavorable outcomes if unrecognized and not well treated. PURPOSE: To report the clinical profile of 34 ocular TB cases observed during 6 years period in Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM). METHOD: A retrospective review of medical records from 34 patients diagnosed with ocular TB in HUSM from January 2011 until December 2016. RESULTS: T

[Ocular changes in course of Mycohacterium tuberculosis infection--own observations].

Ocular tuberculosis occurs rarely and causes many diagnostic difficulties. The aim of this paper is to provide an analysis of diagnostic problems of ocular changes as a consequence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in children. Between 2006 and 2007 there were 7 children at the age 8 to 16 years old, treated in Ophthalmic Department. The infection or contact with Mycobacterium tuberculosis was diagnosed through the range of examination. Diagnosis of tuberculosis included chest radiography, computed tomography of lungs, tuberculin skin test and bronchoscopy. Gastric and bronchial aspirate
