Background Alkaptonuria (OMIM: 203500) is an inborn error of metabolism due to homogentisate 1,2-dioxygenase homogentisic acid 1,2 dioxygenase (HGD) enzyme deficiency. Due to the enzyme deficiency, homogentisic acid cannot be converted to maleylacetoacetate and it accumulates in body fluids. Increased homogentisic acid is converted to benzoquinones, the resulting benzoquinones are converted to melanin-like pigments, and these pigments are deposited in collagen - this process is called ochronosis. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effectiveness of post-abortion contraceptive counseling to women with unwanted pregnancy and to investigate use of modern contraceptive methods among Turkish women.
METHODS: A prospective case-control study was conducted at 3 Turkish centers between March 23, 2008, and January 10, 2011. A total of 333 women enrolled in the study were divided into 2 groups. The Izmir cancer registry, the first population-based cancer registry in Turkey, was established in 1992. Cancer registration is now done by active methods. The registry contributed data on survival for 12 cancer sites or types registered in 1995-1997. Follow-up was predominantly done by active methods with median follow-up ranging between 17-72 months for different cancers. This study determined the spectrum of deaths due to acute agrochemical poisoning in Turkey. Data was obtained from all autopsy reports performed between 1997 and 2001, compiled by the Institute of Forensic Medicine (which is a department of the Ministry of Justice), and evaluated retrospectively. Two brothers, 17 and 21 years of age, with depressed nasal bridge, prominent frontal bones, hypoplastic maxilla, mild sensorineural hearing loss, broad terminal phalanges and mild pulmonary stenosis are presented. These findings are similar to those of the syndrome described by Keipert et al. in 1973. To the best of our knowledge, this is only the second report of this syndrome.

Numerous viruses, mostly in mixed infections, have been associated worldwide with poult enteritis complex (PEC). In 2008 a coronavirus (Fr-TCoV 080385d) was isolated in France from turkey poults exhibiting clinical signs compatible with this syndrome.
