Suprapubic ultrasonography is now routinely used for prostatic examination as it is simple, non-invasive and accurate. Differential diagnosis between benign hypertrophy and cancer is often possible. Evaluation of the size of the prostate is accurate and is a satisfactory means of monitoring the effect of treatment for prostatic cancer.

Partial hydatidiform mole differs from complete mole by its focal distribution, its slower transformation, the presence of an embryo or fetus, and the triploid karyotype. Nineteen pathologically proved cases are presented. Partial mole can be diagnosed by a combination of the following sonographic findings: (a) greatly enlarged placenta relative to the size of the uterine cavity, (b) cystic spaces within the placenta ("molar placenta"), which may not always be present, (c) an amniotic cavity (gestational sac), either empty or containing amorphous fetal echoes, and (d) a well-formed but growth-

The major vascular structures in the retroperitoneum are valuable landmarks for the ultrasonographer. Two cases of focal disease, one involving the pancreatic region (an aneurysm of the superior mesenteric artery) and another involving the kidney (a renal arteriovenous fistula) are presented to emphasize the importance of considering a vascular origin in the differential diagnosis of obscure sonolucent masses.

In a 12-month period 100 patients with clinical evidence of acute disease of the gallbladder were studied in hospital by grey-scale ultrasonography. During the same hospital admission it was possible to correlate results of ultrasonography with operative findings in 66 patients. In 52 patients the ultrasonographic diagnosis of gallstones was proved to be correct. There were no false-positive results. In seven patients the ultrasonographic report of a normal gallbladder without stones was also confirmed. In two patients, the report of a normal gallbladder without stones was erroneous. In two mo

Cysts arising from the spleen are much less common than those arising from other organs such as kidney, liver, and ovary (1). Hemorrhagic cysts of the spleen are rare (1), but we have encountered two patients with this entitiy. The ultrasonograms in each patient demonstrated gravity-dependent layering of two fluids of distinctly different echogenicity. The fluids were contained within a spherical mass. Acoustic enhancement was exhibited behind the mass in each case. This suggested the diagnosis of hemorrhagic cyst.

Ultrasonic examination of abdominal fluid collections sometimes allows identification of the nature of the contained fluid. Abscesses, hematomas, and lymphoceles tend to be ellipsoidal unless confined by particularly resistant structures. Abscesses often contain fine debris. Hematomas develop coarse clumps of strongly echoing material as they age. Lymphoceles have sharp walls and are echo-free. Ascites has an irregular outline, a sharply defined wall, and is echo-free. There may be bowel loops floating in it. Pseudocysts have a widely variable appearance. Bowel loopes that are distended with f

BACKGROUND: Broad hemodynamic changes, is believed to have a profoundly damaging effect on donor livers after brain death (DBD) or cardiac death (DCD). It remains unclear whether Doppler ultrasonography (DUS) and contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS), the imaging modalities to evaluate perfusion, could provide more information of liver discarded.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the ability of DUS and CEUS to predict the risk of DBD or DCD liver discarded.
METHODS: The consecutive DBD or DCD donors with DUS/CEUS examinations before surgical procurement from February 2016 to June 2018 at our institu

Microvascular ultrasonographic imaging is the most recent and unique Doppler ultrasound technique. It uses an advanced clutter filter that can remove clutter artifacts and preserve the low-velocity microvascular flow signal. The potential advantages of microvascular ultrasonography are its superiority in detection and visualization of the small blood vessels in tissues, providing radiologists with more information on the vascular structures. Therefore, it has shown particular value in the clinical fields. The aim of this study was to provide microvascular ultrasonographic images for the tissue

This article reviews different techniques available for diagnosis and staging of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The advantages and disadvantages of each staging method are highlighted. The role of the gastroenterologist in NSCLC staging is explored. A new algorithm is proposed for the staging of NSCLC that incorporates endoscopic and endobronchial ultrasonography for mediastinal staging in patients with intrathoracic disease.

PURPOSE: The objective of the present study is to compare the utility of extended field-of-view ultrasonography and conventional B-mode ultrasonography for determining liver size.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The liver size in the medioclavicular line (MCL) was determined in 104 inpatients (females: n = 47; males: n = 57) using both ultrasound methods (Philips HDI 5000). The liver size measured in computed tomography (CT; MX 8000 IDT, Philips) served as the gold standard. The body mass index (BMI), ultrasound scanning conditions, and hepatomegaly identified by CT were evaluated as possible factors

Ultrasound imaging may have an impact in management patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Through technological improvements, ultrasonography, has become an established imaging technique for the diagnosis and the follow up of this inflammatory chronic disease. In fact, ultrasounds, allow follow up during treatment by evaluating synovitis count and assessment of synovial vascularization by Power Doppler. Besides, erosions are found sooner and more frequently by ultrasonography than with conventional radiography. Rheumatologist training in sonography is essential, this technique has become indispe

Ultrasonography facilitates dynamic, real-time evaluation of bones, joints, tendons, nerves, and vessels, making it an ideal imaging modality for hand and wrist conditions. Ultrasonography can depict masses and fluid collections, help locate radiolucent foreign bodies, characterize traumatic or overuse tendon or ligament pathology, and help evaluate compressive peripheral neuropathy and microvascular blood flow. Additionally, this modality improves the accuracy of therapeutic intra-articular or peritendinous injections and facilitates aspiration of fluid collections, such as ganglia.

Ultrasound has become popular among rheumatologists as the first-choice imaging investigation for the evaluation and monitoring of osteoarthritis (OA). Because of recent improvement in technology, ultrasound has the ability to demonstrate and assess the minimal structural abnormalities, which involve the pathophysiology and progression of OA, such as articular cartilage, synovial tissue, bony cortex, and other soft tissue. Nowadays, ultrasonography is a promising technique for assessing soft tissue abnormalities such as joint effusion, synovial hypertrophy, Baker cyst, and other structural cha
