[Impact of the women's press on the attitudes of readers toward ultraviolet radiation--a survey of law and psychology students].

UNLABELLED: Excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVA and UVB) leads to negative consequences including sunburn, carcinogenesis and photoaging. Therefore, educational campaigns promoting safe tanning and sunscreens are necessary. Helpful with this regard might be mass media including women's magazines, which for young people are important source of information on health, beauty and lifestyle. The aim of the study was to examine the influence of women's press in the attitude of non-medical students toward ultraviolet radiation (UV) as well as to analyse articles about tanning and skin pr

Quasi-periodic X-ray eruptions years after a nearby tidal disruption event.

Quasi-periodic eruptions (QPEs) are luminous bursts of soft X-rays from the nuclei of galaxies, repeating on timescales of hours to weeks1-5. The mechanism behind these rare systems is uncertain, but most theories involve accretion disks around supermassive black holes (SMBHs) undergoing instabilities6-8 or interacting with a stellar object in a close orbit9-11. It has been suggested that this disk could be created when the SMBH disrupts a passing star8,11, implying that many QPEs should be preceded by observable tidal disruption events (TDEs). Two known QPE sources show long-term decays in qu

Ocular and Facial Far-UVC Doses from Ceiling-Mounted 222 nm Far-UVC Fixtures.

Far-UVC radiation, defined in this paper as ultraviolet (UV) radiation with wavelengths from 200 to 235 nm, is a promising tool to help prevent the spread of disease. The unique advantage of far-UVC technology over traditional UV germicidal irradiation lies in the potential for direct application of far-UVC into occupied spaces since antimicrobial doses of far-UVC are significantly below the recommended daily safe exposure limits. This study used a ceiling-mounted far-UVC fixture emitting at 222 nm to directly irradiate an indoor space and then evaluated the doses received upon a manikin. Radi

Photochemical studies on the anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac.

Irradiation with UVA light of the anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac [2-(2,6-dichloroanilino)phenylacetic acid] in aqueous buffer or methanol solution leads to sequential loss of both chlorine substituents and ring closure to carbazole-1-acetic acid as the major product. Minor products result from substitution by the solvent. The photosensitizing properties of diclofenac and its major photoproduct were tested with singlet oxygen substrates and in the free radical polymerization of acrylamide. Although the major carbazole product is a weakly phototoxic agent, able to generate singlet oxygen more

Eco-friendly Synthesis, Characterization, and Biological Evaluation of Silver Nanoparticles from Verbascum uschakense Aqueous Extract.

Silver nanoparticles synthesized using Verbascum uschakense extract at a reaction temperature of 60 °C were characterized through multiple analytical techniques. These included ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Ultraviolet-visible spectral analysis revealed a surface plasmon resonance peak at 432 nanometers, indicating the successful formation of silver nanoparticles. Microscopic analyses demonstrated that the nanoparticles

Flower-shaped ZnO nanoparticles synthesized by a novel approach at near-room temperatures with antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Due to enormous applications of metal oxide nanoparticles in research and health-related applications, metal oxide nanoparticles are increasingly being developed through cheaper and more user-friendly approaches. We have formulated a simple route to synthesize zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZNPs) by a sol-gel method at near-room temperatures 25°C, 35°C, 55°C, and 75°C. The results are analyzed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy. The effect of different temperature conditions (25°C-75°C) on the

A model of the UV skin dose distribution in paediatric whole-body phototherapy.

The radiance equation is applied in this study to model the ultraviolet (UV) radiation dose distribution over the skin in paediatric and adult patients treated in a whole-body phototherapy cabin. This approach extends a previously published model of UV radiation dose based on thermal radiation exchange between surfaces (Colemanet al2020Biomed. Phys. Eng. Express6055023). The new model makes it feasible to predict the distribution of UV irradiance over the head, trunk and legs in patients of varying height. The modelled irradiance distributions to directly lamp-facing skin surfaces agree to wit

Treatment of psoriasis with long-wave ultraviolet light.

Repeated wxposures of 4 by 5-cm sites to erythemogenic doses (20 to 300 joules/sq cm) of long-wave ultraviolet light (UV-A; 320 to 400 nm) led to improvement of the psoriasis vulgaris condition in nine of ten patients treated. Comparison studies showed the therapeutic responses to be similar to that of daily sunburn spectrum (UV-B; 290 to 320 nm) radiation. This finding suggests that the therapeutic response spectrum for psoriasis may parallel the action spectrum for delayed erythema of all portions of the ultraviolet spectrum that pass through psoriatic scale.

Synephrine Inhibits Oxidative Stress and H2O2-Induced Premature Senescence.

Synephrine, a protoalkaloid found in Citrus aurantium (CA) peels, exerts lipolytic, anti-inflammatory, and vasoconstrictive effects; however, its antioxidant activity remains unclear. In this study, electron spin resonance spectroscopy revealed that synephrine scavenged both hydroxyl and superoxide anion radicals. Several external stimuli, such as H2O2, X-rays, and ultraviolet (UV) radiation, cause stress-induced premature senescence (SIPS). As oxidative stress induces SIPS, we hypothesized that synephrine, an antioxidant, would suppress H2O2-induced premature senescence in WI-38 cells. Syneph

Children of the Sun: a historical look at how pediatric light therapy shaped attitudes and behaviors toward sunbathing.

Today, parents are warned to protect their children from the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays, the most preventable and leading cause of skin cancer. Yet, during the first half of the 20th century, the medical community widely extolled the health benefits of daily sunbaths for babies and children. What initially had begun as evidence-based medical therapies to prevent pediatric diseases, specifically tuberculosis and rickets, soon took on a life of its own as physicians, public health experts, and the general public embraced sunbathing and tanning as a means to ensure health and wellbeing for child

Mechanisms of hormesis through mild heat stress on human cells.

In a series of experimental studies, it was shown that repetitive mild heat stress has antiaging hormetic effects on growth and various other cellular and biochemical characteristics of human skin fibroblasts undergoing aging in vitro. We have reported the hormetic effects of repeated challenge at the levels of maintenance of stress protein profile; reduction in the accumulation of oxidatively and glycoxidatively damaged proteins; stimulation of the proteasomal activities for the degradation of abnormal proteins; improved cellular resistance to ethanol, hydrogen peroxide, and ultraviolet-B ray

[Current aspects of xeroderma pigmentosum: apropos of two new cases].

Two recent cases of children treated for xeroderma pigmentosum are reported, and knowledge of the disease updated based on numerous reports published over the last few years, particularly by french authors ( Vaillant et al., 1979 and Mouly , Dufourmentel and Papadopoulos , 1980). Points discussed include the similarity of histology and course of the malignant cutaneous lesions with those of adult outdoor workers (co- carcinogenic role of ultraviolet rays ?), and the effect of the introduction of vitamin A acid into treatment on the course of the general and cutaneous lesions (immunocompetence,…

Phosphogypsum Processing into Blue Fluorescent Pigments Under Ultraviolet Excitation.

In this work, we introduce the novel possibility of producing blue fluorescent ultraviolet pigments from phosphogypsum. The obtained materials are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The formation of the CaS phase in the sample during the reduction of calcium sulfate was established. Thermal treatment of phosphogypsum in the presence of a reducing agent (potato starch) under environmental isolation conditions is found to yield high-quality products with high added value. The highest luminosity is established in
