BACKGROUND: Ureaplasma urealyticum is a fastidious bacteria which lacks a cell wall. Extragenital infections are rare in immunocompetent adults. A novel strain of the genus Ureaplasma, designated TOSA-KAIYUT, was isolated from the faeces of a whale shark (Rhincodon typus).
