Effects of subtoxic levels of lead and cadmium on urogenital organs of male rats.

Higher incidence of prostate cancer among lead and cadmium smelter workers has been reported. Forty male rats were divided into four groups. Group I served as control; Group II was injected intraperitoneally, close to the site of the prostate, with 0.05 mg lead acetate; Group III was injected with 0.05 mg cadmium chloride; and Group IV was injected with a combination of 0.025 mg lead and 0.025 mg cadmium chloride. After daily injection for one month, lead and cadmium had a synergistic effect on testicular damage and prostatic cytology; although no tumor formation was observed in the prostate,

Treatment of cyclophosphamide-induced hemorrhagic cystitis in five dogs.

Sterile hemorrhagic cystitis developed in 5 dogs after treatment with cyclophosphamide. Four dogs were being treated with various antineoplastic protocols, and the fifth dog had recurrent immune-mediated thrombocytopenia. In all instances, clinical signs of hematuria and stranguria persisted after cyclophosphamide administration was discontinued. Three dogs required cystotomy to remove necrotic mucosa and calculi. The other 2 dogs were treated with intravesicularly administered dimethyl sulfoxide to decrease inflammation and to inhibit fibroplasia of the bladder wall. In 4 dogs, clinical signs

Pseudo-tumours of the urinary tract in patients with spinal cord injury/spina bifida.

OBJECTIVE: To raise awareness of pseudo-tumours of urinary tract, as pseudo-tumours represent benign mass lesions simulating malignant neoplasms. Accurate diagnosis helps to avoid unnecessary surgery in spinal cord injury patients. SETTING: Regional Spinal Injuries Centre, Southport, UK CASE REPORTS: Pseudo-tumour of kidney: A 58-year-old man with tetraplegia developed a right perirenal haematoma while taking warfarin; ultrasound and CT scanning showed no evidence of tumour in the right kidney. The haematoma was drained percutaneously. After 8 months, during investigation of a urine infection

Aphallia associated with urethro-rectal fistula and stones in the bladder and urethra.

Aphallia is a rare urogenital anomaly. It usually coexists with other serious anomalies, which are incompatible with normal life. We present herewith a 18-month-old child who presented with aphallia and urethro-scrotal fistula along with stones in the bladder and urethra. The stones were removed and the fistula was surgically corrected.

Xanthine stone in the urinary bladder of a male child.

Urinary tract calculi composed primarily of xanthine are rate both in adults and children. We describe the clinical presentation and management of a 3.5-year-old boy with hereditary xanthinuria (an autosomal recessive disorder of purine metabolism) and primary bladder calculus formed from xanthine. To our knowledge this case demonstrates a previously undescribed form of xanthinuria in childhood. Xanthine stones, although rare, should be considered in the diagnosis of urolithiasis.

Cystoscopy.

Cystoscopy is a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure commonly employed in human medicine but that has received limited application in small animal practice. Readily applicable, cost-effective instruments are available for use in the dog and cat. The urethral opening, urethra, bladder, and ureteral openings can be effectively assessed, and samples can be collected for histopathology, cultures, and stone analysis. Cystoscopy is indicated for assessment of chronic cystitis, hematuria, tenesmus, increased frequency of urination, urinary incontinence, alteration of urinary stream, trauma, and cysti

[Clinical variants of idiopathic hypercalciuria in children].

Out of five children with hypercalciuria, four had nephrocalcinosis and one recurrent bladder calculi. Two out of four patients with nephrocalcinosis (patients 1 and 2) had the "hyperprostaglandin E syndrome" and the other two (patients 3 and 4, siblings) had the Royer syndrome (osteopathy, dwarfism, secondary hyperparathyroidism). Treatment with hydrochlorothiazide is effective in patients without increased urinary excretion of prostaglandin, whereas patients with increased prostaglandin excretion respond better to indomethacin therapy.

Bladder Stone Secondary to Migration of an Intrauterine Device: A Case Report.

Intravesical migration of intrauterine devices (IUDs) is an uncommon complication that may lead to recurrent urinary tract infections, lower urinary tract symptoms, and bladder stone formation. Diagnosis requires high clinical suspicion and confirmation through imaging and cystoscopy. We present the case of a 33-year-old hypertensive woman with a history of two cesarean deliveries for preeclampsia who underwent IUD placement in 2016. She subsequently developed recurrent urinary tract infections. In 2024, hysteroscopic removal was attempted unsuccessfully. Computed tomography revealed a calcifi

Incontinent ileo-vesicostomy urinary diversion in the treatment of lower urinary tract dysfunction.

The combination of high spinal cord injury and neurovesical dysfunction can present formidable problems in urological management. The lack of upper extremity function often prevents intermittent catheterization and leads to alternative methods. A total of 23 patients underwent incontinent ileo-vesicostomy in an effort to gain a low pressure bladder and control of urinary soiling: 17 had been previously treated by catheter drainage, 9 had bladder and/or renal calculi, 9 experienced recurrent sepsis, and 7 had urethrocutaneous fistula and total urinary incontinence. Most patients had poorly comp

Pregnancy after augmentation cystoplasty.

During the past ten years, many children with urinary diversions have undergone reconstruction of the urinary tract by means of augmentation cystoplasty, with or without an artificial genitourinary sphincter. We recently treated two patients with augmented bladders whose pregnancies were complicated by multiple infections of the urinary tract, urinary calculi and incontinence. One patient with an artificial genitourinary sphincter had malfunction of the device during the later stages of pregnancy; it resolved after birth. In the second patient, pyelonephritis may have led to premature delivery

A challenging case of a multiple large stones in enterocystoplasty: a case report.

In recent years, the utilization of enterocystoplasty for bladder function enhancement has increased, albeit accompanied by risks such as stone formation, necessitating vigilant follow-up. We report a case of a 60-year-old female with a neobladder who presented with back pain, constipation, and pelvic heaviness, revealing multiple large stones in imaging. Stone analysis showed calcium oxalate and magnesium. Enterocystolithotomy was performed to manage the condition. Enterocystoplasty, a standard treatment for bladder cancer, can lead to stone formation due to factors like urinary stasis and in

Percutaneous cystolithotomy in the pediatric neuropathic bladder with laparoscopic trocar access: a modified approach useful for the augmented and native bladder, and continent urinary reservoir.

OBJECTIVE: We present our results of percutaneous cystolithotomy with laparoscopic trocar (PCLT) access in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: PCLT was performed in 13 cases. This includes 2 patients who had this performed twice for recurrent stone 12-24 months after initial surgery. Eight patients had a bladder augmentation, 2 had native bladders, and one a continent urinary reservoir. Nine patients had a reconstructed urethra. Cystoscopy was performed in all cases to assess stone burden. Under direct vision, an 18 gauge angiocatheter was placed into bladder and guidewire placed through the ang

[Endovesical surgery via the suprapubic approach].

Experience had with suprapubic cystoscopy and endovesical surgery, performed in a series of twenty-two patients presenting various diseases of the bladder--tumors, mainly of the anterior wall, calculi, foreign bodies, bladder neck sclerosis, defective Foley catheter--is shared. As a sole complication a case of penetrating the abdominal cavity without inflicting lesion to the intestine, is described. The suprapubic approach significantly broadens the scope of transurethral surgery, preserves its advantages, and is furthermore free of the shortcomings associated with open operations.
