Solitary cystic cerebral metastasis from transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder.

Metastatic brain tumors are the most common intracranial neoplasm in adults. Bladder cancer gives metastasis to the brain in less than 1%. Herewith, we report on a case of a 71-year-old man who was admitted to the emergency department after an episode of loss of consciousness. On neurological examination a left hemiparesis was observed. The patient's previous history entailed a total cystectomy and radical prostatectomy 7 months ago because of a transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the urinary bladder. Brain imaging work-up revealed a cystic lesion with perifocal edema in the right frontal lob

[Incidence and distribution of lymphoid neoplasm of the urinary tract and male genital organs in an urban area of northern Italy in the last decade].

INTRODUCTION: Lymphoid neoplasms of the urinary tract and male genital organs are relatively rare, comprising less than 5% of all primary extranodal lymphomas; only a handful of small case series and isolated case reports have been published to describe their predominant sites and subtypes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched our institution's electronic archive of pathology reports from
2001 to 2012. We considered lymphoid neoplasms involving the kidney, bladder, testes and prostate. Patient age at diagnosis, sex, clinical history, and outcome were recorded using the relevant electronic medi

Testicular Teratocarcinoma in a Ferret (Mustela putorius furo).

A 7-month-old male domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo) was presented for evaluation of unilateral testicular enlargement. Microscopic examination of the left testicle revealed a neoplasm with differentiation along multiple cell lines (ectoderm, endoderm, mesoderm) including respiratory epithelium, bone and haired skin. A poorly differentiated epithelial component was dispersed throughout the neoplasm with invasion of testicular lymphatics. The animal developed progressive dysuria and was euthanized. At necropsy, metastasis of the poorly differentiated epithelial component was present in th

Bladder perivascular epithelioid cell neoplasm: Review on clinical features of this rare tumor.

Perivascular epithelioid cell neoplasm (PEComa) is a rare mesenchymal tumor composed of histologically and immunohistochemically distinctive perivascular epithelioid cells. They can arise in various localizations such as the bladder. A total of 36 case reports regarding bladder PEComa have been described in the literature. Eleven reviews regarding this tumor have been published in literature so far primarily focusing on anatomic pathology. Through these reviews, it is known that in bladder PEComa, the melanocytic marker Human Melanoma Black-45 is expressed in 100% of cases whereas variable exp

Carcinosarcoma of the ureter with a small cell component: report of a rare pathologic entity and potential for diagnostic error on biopsy.

Carcinosarcomas of the ureter are rare biphasic neoplasms, composed of both malignant epithelial (carcinomatous) and malignant mesenchymal (sarcomatous) components. Carcinosarcomas of the urinary tract are exceedingly rare. We report a unique case of a carcinosarcoma of the ureter with a chondrosarcoma and small cell tumor component arising in a 68-year-old male who presented with microscopic hematuria. CT intravenous pyelogram revealed right-sided hydroureter and hydronephrosis with thickening and narrowing of the right ureter. The patient underwent robot-assisted ureterectomy with bladder cu

19q13 amplification with AKT2 and ERCC2 gains in sarcomatoid carcinoma of the urinary bladder.

BACKGROUND: Sarcomatoid carcinoma of the bladder is a rare and aggressive biphasic malignant neoplasm, representing approximately 0.1-0.3% of all bladder cancers. It is characterized by the coexistence of malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components. Its poor prognosis and limited systemic treatment options underscore the need for improved molecular characterization. CASE PRESENTATION: A 75-year-old male with chronic cystitis and squamous metaplasia of the bladder presented with acute urinary obstruction caused by a large bladder mass. Histopathological evaluation revealed a biphasic tumor

Urinary bladder lesions in bovine enzootic haematuria.

In cattle, bracken fern chronic toxicity is characterized by the presence of multiple tumours in the bladder (bovine enzootic haematuria). From October 1999 to March 2003, 433 urinary bladders with macroscopical lesions were collected in the slaughterhouse of São Miguel Island (Azores, Portugal), an endemic area where Pteridium aquilinum infestation in pastures is high. Bladder lesions were divided into three main categories (inflammatory lesions, non-neoplastic epithelial abnormalities and tumours) and described in detail. In some cases, neoplastic growth was confined to a single site, but in

Primary heterologous carcinosarcoma (metaplastic carcinoma) of the urinary bladder: a clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural analysis of eight cases and a review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Heterologous carcinosarcomas of the urinary bladder are rare neoplasms, the histogenesis of which is still disputed. METHODS: The clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural features of eight cases were analyzed. RESULTS: The patients, 5 males and 3 females, had a median age of 70 years. Gross hematuria, dysuria, and urinary tract infections were the main presenting symptoms. Tumors were solitary in all cases and located in the right wall in six cases. Tumor size ranged from 2 to 12 cm (median, 5 cm). Four patients died of disease 2, 6, 17, and 42 months postopera

Primary PEComa of the bladder treated with primary excision and adjuvant interferon-alpha immunotherapy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms of uncertain malignant potential, which have in common the co-expression of muscle and melanocytic immunohistochemical markers. CASE PRESENTATION: A 48-year-old man presented with dysuria, passage of urinary sediment and lower abdominal discomfort. A three centimeter mass was identified by cystoscopy in the posterior midline of the bladder. Computerized tomography suggested an enterovesical fistula. The patient underwent laparotomy, partial cystectomy and partial small bowel resection. Pathological exami

[Solitary fibrous tumor of the urinary bladder].

INTRODUCTION: A solitary fibrous tumor is a rare circumscribed neoplasm that was long known in the pleura and has now described in many organs and soft tissues. Prognosis is favorable after complete excision. CASE: We report a solitary tumor fibrous located in the bladder of a 38-year-old man with dysuria and a palpable abdominal mass. DISCUSSION: Solitary fibrous tumors are reported very rarely in the urinary bladder. They may mimic other nonepithelial tumors in this site. Diagnosis based only on pathological features is difficult. When complete excision is possible, prognosis is generally

New-onset urinary symptoms following marriage leading to discovery of inverted urothelial papilloma in a young female: A case report.

Persistent urinary symptoms, such as dysuria and urgency in young women, despite treatment for postcoital urinary tract infections commonly termed "honeymoon cystitis," warrant evaluation for rare entities such as inverted urothelial papilloma (IUP), a benign neoplasm uncommonly seen in young females, with diagnosis confirmed histopathologically, given its potential to mimic recurrent UTI. A 25-year-old newly married female developed recurrent urinary tract infection symptoms shortly after marriage, with only partial improvement with antibiotics. Persistent symptoms prompted imaging and cystos

Telocytes and ezrin expression in normal-appearing tissues adjacent to urothelial bladder carcinoma as predictors of invasiveness and recurrence.

Recurrence and progression rates vary widely among different histological subtypes of bladder cancer (BC). Normal-appearing mucosa in non-muscle invasive bladder cancer and muscle-invasive bladder cancer in cystoscopy and histopathology is a factor in staging and treatment. Telocytes (TCs) are spindle-shaped cells that connect with other cell types allowing communication though cytoskeletal signaling. They are involved in tissue regeneration and pathogenesis of diseases and cancer. In this study, 12 normal-appearing tissues from urinary bladder with BC, both invasive and non-invasive were eval

Tumors of the Urogenital Tract.

Neoplasia has been reported to involve the majority of the urinary system of the horse, with tumors affecting the kidneys and bladder most comprehensively described. Primary tumors of the external genitalia are relatively common in the horse and are easily identified on clinical examination while primary tumors of the upper urogenital tract are uncommon. This article will highlight the common tumors, their clinical presentations, and discuss potential medical and surgical treatment options available. The less common neoplasms will be mentioned but not discussed in depth.

Primary Neuroendocrine Tumors of the Ureter: A Short Review.

Neuroendocrine tumors represent 0.05% of urinary tract malignancies, and most originate in the bladder. Their pathogenesis is debated, since ureters are thought to lack neuroendocrine cells. Morphologically, most ureteral neuroendocrine tumors demonstrate the typical small cell neuroendocrine appearance, are immunohistochemically positive for synaptophysin/chromogranin A/CD56, and show electron-dense granules by electron microscopy. Clinical presentation is similar to that of other more common ureteral neoplasms. Prognosis is usually dismal, but a multimodal treatment approach including platin

Sarcomatoid urothelial carcinoma with chondrosarcomatous differentiation of the ureter: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Sarcomatoid urothelial cell carcinoma of the urinary tract has a poor prognosis. Most of the reported cases of sarcomatoid urothelial cell carcinomas are those from the urinary bladder. A limited number of these tumors originate from the ureter. CASE: We describe a ureteral sarcomatoid urothelial carcinoma in a 63-year-old man who underwent nephroureterectomy with bladder cuff. The malignant epithelial elements consisted of undifferentiated polygonal cells and areas of glandular formation. Urothelial carcinoma in situ was present in the overlying mucosa. The mesenchymal components

Incidental detection of urinary tract abnormalities with skeletal scintigraphy.

Urinary tract abnormalities are detected as incidental findings in 15% of skeletal scintigraphic studies. Several scintigraphic patterns denote these abnormalities. Bilateral diffuse increased uptake is found in patients who have undergone chemotherapy and those with hyperparathyroidism, hypercalcemia, and sickle cell disease. Bilateral diffuse decreased uptake occurs in patients with end-stage renal disease, extensive metastatic disease to the bone, and various hematologic disorders. Focal increased activity is associated with postoperative changes and effects from radiation therapy. Focal de

Giant botryoid fibroepithelial polyp of bladder with myofibroblastic stroma and cystitis cystica et glandularis.

A 3-year-old boy presented with a single episode of gross hematuria and no history of previous urinary tract disorder. Imaging studies revealed a large complex polypoid filling defect in the bladder lumen. Several attempts at transurethral biopsy and cytological examination of the urine revealed clumps of benign epithelial cells, but suspicion of a malignant neoplasm such as rhabdomyosarcoma remained high and the lesion was resected. The specimen measured 15 cm, had a narrow zone of attachment to the bladder mucosa, and was grossly botryoid. Changes typical of cystitis cystica et glandularis w

Prognosis of Primary Papillary Ta Grade 3 Bladder Cancer in the Non-muscle-invasive Spectrum.

BACKGROUND: Ta grade 3 (G3) non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) is a relatively rare diagnosis with an ambiguous character owing to the presence of an aggressive G3 component together with the lower malignant potential of the Ta component. The European Association of Urology (EAU) NMIBC guidelines recently changed the risk stratification for Ta G3 from high risk to intermediate, high, or very high risk. However, prognostic studies on Ta G3 carcinomas are limited and inconclusive. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prognostic value of categorizing Ta G3 compared to Ta G2 and T1 G3 carcinomas.
