Evaluation of female urinary incontinence device.

A new silicone rubber inflatable vaginal pessary has been evaluated in 33 patients with stress incontinence due to urethral sphincter dysfunction (genuine stress incontinence), confirmed by urodynamic assessment. Nine of 20 patients who used the device for one month showed subjective improvement and 2 patients have continued to use the device. Urodynamic changes include a marked increase in maximum urethral closure pressure and elevation of the bladder neck.

Urinary incontinence in patients receiving neuroleptics.

This paper presents a series of case reports making the observation of a possible association between neuroleptic drug therapy and urinary incontinence. The incontinence was limited and not of the overflow or stress variety. Anticholinergic compounds or drug action did not seem to influence or account for the findings. A central basis is postulated for consideration and warrants further study.

Urinary stress incontinence and common sense.

Retropubic bladder neck suspension has been used to treat 352 women presenting with the primary complaint of urinary stress incontinence. The author's concept of the proper assessment and management of such patients, in whom previous surgical treatment has failed, is stated. A plea is made for the abandonment of traumatic surgical methods and the confusing multiplicity of names that accompanies them.

Peripartum Urinary Incontinence and Overactive Bladder.

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and urgency urinary incontinence (UUI) and symptoms of urgency, frequency, and nocturia are prevalent during pregnancy and the postpartum period but often are underestimated. Overactive bladder, including UUI, affects nearly 65% of patients during pregnancy. Postpartum SUI particularly is associated with mood disorders. Despite the association, many women delay seeking care. Effective treatments for urinary incontinence are available, and timely peripartum screening supports early intervention and enhances quality of life.

Urinary incontinence: implications for nursing practice.

Urinary incontinence, encompassing stress, urge, and overflow types, significantly impacts patients' physical, psychological, and social wellbeing. This article provides an overview of each type, exploring their pathophysiology, risk factors, and clinical presentations. It emphasises the crucial role of nursing and discusses evidence-based management strategies, including behavioural therapies, pharmacological treatments and patient education. The article also addresses the impact of incontinence on quality of life and future directions for research and practice, advocating a multidisciplinary…

Urinary Incontinence in Elite Female Athletes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize the current understanding on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and management strategies of urinary incontinence (UI) in female athletes, highlighting findings specific to nulliparous elite athletes. RECENT FINDINGS: UI occurs in about 20-50% of female athletes of all ages and parity status, around 40% for younger nulliparous athletes, and is more prevalent in high-impact sports. Possible contributing factors to UI in female elite athletes include pelvic floor laxity and bladder neck descent, pelvic floor muscle fatigue, low energy availability, and hypermobil…

Physiotherapy assessment for female urinary incontinence.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: As noted in the 6th International Consultation on Incontinence (ICI) chapter "Initial Management of Urinary Incontinence in Women" recommendations call for including physiotherapy as a first-line therapy. METHODS: Building on this, checking available scientific evidence and using the International Classification of Functioning, Disabilities and Health, the following represents a holistic physiotherapist approach for initial evaluation of the health problem of urinary incontinence. RESULTS: This paper proposes a teaching module for every relevant health care profe…

Predictors of occult stress urinary incontinence.

BACKGROUND: Causes for occult stress urinary incontinence (SUI) are poorly recognised. AIMS: To explore the mechanisms behind occult SUI. We hypothesised that cystocele type affects the risk of occult SUI. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, cross-sectional study on 878 consecutive women assessed at a tertiary urogynaecologic clinic between July 2016 and November 2018. The population of this study consisted of 424 women with urodynamic stress incontinence. Women with previous anti-incontinence surgery were excluded. All women underwent a standardised interview, clinical exam…

Female Voiding Dysfunction and Urinary Incontinence.

Female voiding dysfunction and incontinence are common in the general population and symptoms have been shown to have a significant negative impact on health-related quality of life. This article highlights the epidemiology, evaluation, diagnosis, pharmacologic therapies, and surgical treatment for overactive bladder, stress urinary incontinence, and urogenital fistulas.

Risk factors for postpartum urinary incontinence.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk factors for postpartum urinary incontinence (UI) and its characteristics. METHOD: This was a case-control study with 344 puerperal women (77 cases and 267 controls) with up to 90 days postpartum. In a single session, participants were given a questionnaire with sociodemographic and clinical data and two others that assessed urine leakage, leakage situations, and type of UI. RESULTS: Stress UI was present in 45.5% of the women, incidents of urine leakage several times a day in 44.2%, of which 71.4% were in small amounts and 57.1% when coughing or sneezing. I…

[Surgical treatment of stress urinary incontinence].

OBJECTIVE: Urinary stress incontinence considerably decreases the life quality of women, which makes search for effective methods of treatment essential. The research presents results of surgical treatment of 230 patients with stress urinary incontinence between 2011 and 2014. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Efficiency of treatment of urinary incontinence in women, using Tension-free Vaginal Tape (TVT-O) and mini-sling Ophira was presented. The evaluation was made out of complaints and physical examination in target groups, including patients with concurrent genital prolapse and mixed urinary incontin…

[EXPERIMENTAL MODELS OF STRESS URINARY INCONTINENCE].

Despite numerous medical and surgical treatment strategies available, the problem of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) in women is still not completely resolved. Continuing research is underway to modify the sling operations and develop new bulk-enhancing agents, including the use of tissue engineering and cell technologies. To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of new methods at the preclinical stage, adequate and reproducible experimental models of SUI in laboratory animals should be used. This article presents analysis of all SUI models described in the scientific literature and the resu…

Cell Therapy for Stress Urinary Incontinence.

Urinary incontinence (UI) is the involuntary loss of urine and is a common condition in middle-aged and elderly women and men. Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is caused by leakage of urine when coughing, sneezing, laughing, lifting, and exercise, even standing leads to increased intra-abdominal pressure. Other types of UI also exist such as urge incontinence (also called overactive bladder), which is a strong and unexpected sudden urge to urinate, mixed forms of UI that result in symptoms of both urge and stress incontinence, and functional incontinence caused by reduced mobility, cognitive …

[Conservative treatment in male urinary incontinence].

Prevalence, pathophysiology, diagnostic and therapeutic approaches of urinary incontinence are well studied in women; however, studies on male urinary incontinence focus on incontinence following surgery of the bladder or prostate, predominantly incontinence after radical prostatectomy. Aging men suffer from incontinence, most frequently urge incontinence (overactive bladder, OAB), nearly as often as women do.The domain of conservative therapy of urinary stress incontinence in men is pelvic floor training. It remains unclear whether biofeedback procedures, electrostimulation therapy, or magnet…
