Uvula-nodulus and gravity direction (a study on vertical optokinetic-oculomotor functions).

Some characteristics of vertical optokinetic nystagmus and after-nystagmus, in particular, its up/down gain asymmetry, are known to be influenced by gravity direction, which is basically perceived by otolith organs. However, how such an information of gravity direction is processed within the central nervous system is not well understood, even though the role of cerebellar uvula and nodulus in vertical eye movements has been identified for some time. Accordingly, in this study, vertical optokinetic nystagmus and after-nystagmus were studied in squirrel monkeys both in the upright and side-late…

Prevalence of cleft uvula among school children in kindergarten through grade five.

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of bifid uvula among elementary school children in grades K through 5. Three examiners performed independent intraoral examinations of 709 children enrolled in a Jacksonville, Florida metropolitan public school. The structure of the uvula was evaluated as normal or bifid. If bifid, the cleft was classified as: (a) notched, (b) extending up to 1/4 the length of the uvula, (c) extending from 1/4 to 3/4 of the length of the uvula, or (d) extending the full length of the uvula. Prevalence of some form of uvular cleft was observed among 16 (…

Nodulus-uvula depressor response: central GABA-mediated inhibition of alpha-adrenergic outflow.

Electrical stimulation of a lateral region of the cerebellar nodulus-uvula transition zone in anesthetized albino rabbits decreases mean arterial blood pressure in direct proportion to stimulus intensity. The hypotension has an abrupt onset and is phasic; heart rate is unaffected. Neural pathways that might mediate the depressor response were studied using autonomic-blocking agents. Pretreatment with 2 mg/kg iv of either propranolol HCl or atropine methyl nitrate did not alter the onset or duration of the hypotensive response. However, pretreatment with 2 mg/kg iv phentolamine HCl abolished th…

Squamous cell carcinoma of the soft palate, uvula, and anterior faucial pillar.

This retrospective study concerns 188 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the soft palate, uvula, and anterior faucial pillar treated for cure between 1970 and 1983. Men predominated in the group (1.9:1) and 55% of the patients were between 60 and 70 years old. Mean duration of followup was 56.7 months. TNM stage distribution was 29, 67, 37, and 49 patients for stages I, II, III, and IV respectively; six patients were unstaged because of previous excisional biopsy. Treatment to the primary site consisted of radiotherapy for 150 patients, surgery alone for 28 patients, and combined therapy…

Definitive Radiation Therapy for Schneiderian Inverted Papilloma of the Soft Palate and Uvula.

Schneiderian inverted papilloma is a benign, locally aggressive tumor that typically arises in the respiratory mucosa of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. These tumors are often asymptomatic but can cause unilateral nasal obstruction, discharge, hyposmia and epistaxis. They warrant attention particularly due to the potential for malignant transformation. They are treated most often with surgical excision. This case report describes a patient with Schneiderian inverted papilloma arising outside its usual location and managed with definitive radiation therapy instead of surgical excision d

Development of Soft Palatal Musculature Characterized by the Uvula Muscle of Miniature Pig.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical reconstruction is recommended for cleft palate patients. However, improper muscle reconstruction can cause scarring and velopharyngeal insufficiency. Understanding the developmental patterns of soft palatal musculature is crucial for improving treatments. Although mice are commonly used to investigate soft palate development, the uvula deficiency in mice limits their applicability. This study aimed to compare the developmental characteristics of soft palate muscles in miniature pigs and mice at various stages to better understand the patterns in large mammals. METHODS: …

Extranodal NK/T Cell Lymphoma with Destruction of the Uvulae: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Extranodal Natural Killer (NK)/T-cell lymphoma (NKTCL) nasal type is a rare but well-known disease with poor prognosis. NKTCL is more prevalent in Asia and comprises about 7-10% of all non-Hodgkin lymphoma cases in this region. The characteristic clinical pattern of NKTCL is the destruction of the midline structures of the mid-face. CASE REPORT: The present study examines a case of NKTCL in a 23-year-old man with a destructive ulcer of the palate and uvulae. Based on immunohistochemical results, after three months of delay, the definitive diagnosis was revealed to be Extranodal …

Enhancement of the bias component of downbeat nystagmus after lesions of the nodulus and uvula.

In two monkeys, we recorded spontaneous eye movements before and after ablation of the cerebellar nodulus and uvula (Nod/Uv). In both monkeys, there was an increase in upward ocular drift (downbeat nystagmus [DBN]) in darkness (M1: 1.5 degrees/s pre, 3.4 degrees/s post; M2: 1.3 degrees/s pre, 7.0 degrees/s post), but not in light. There was little effect of orbital position on drift velocity. These findings suggest that the Nod/Uv may play a role in the bias component of DBN.

Lesions of the cerebellar nodulus and uvula in monkeys: effect on otolith-ocular reflexes.

We studied two rhesus monkeys before and after surgical ablation of the nodulus and uvula (Nod/Uv) of the cerebellum. Three-axis eye movements were recorded with the magnetic-field scleral search coil system during a variety of vestibular and ocular motor tasks. Here we describe the effects of the Nod/Uv lesions on dynamic (head translation) and static (head tilt) otolith-mediated vestibulo-ocular reflexes. The main findings were: 1. eye velocity during sinusoidal vertical translation (1.5 Hz) was reduced by 59% in the dark and 36% in the light; 2. eye velocity during steps of horizontal trans…

Frequency-selective coding of translation and tilt in macaque cerebellar nodulus and uvula.

Spatial orientation depends critically on the brain's ability to segregate linear acceleration signals arising from otolith afferents into estimates of self-motion and orientation relative to gravity. In the absence of visual information, this ability is known to deteriorate at low frequencies. The cerebellar nodulus/uvula (NU) has been shown to participate in this computation, although its exact role remains unclear. Here, we show that NU simple spike (SS) responses also exhibit a frequency dependent selectivity to self-motion (translation) and spatial orientation (tilt). At 0.5 Hz, Purkinje …

The ventral uvula of the mouse cerebellum: a neural target of ethanol and vestibular stimuli.

The present study demonstrates that mice exposed to vertical translation stimulation exhibit a distinct parasagittal pattern of Fos-immunoreactive (Fos-IR) granule cells in the ventral uvula of the cerebellum. This pattern is identical to one produced by acute ethanol treatment. In contrast, yaw stimulation produces an entirely different pattern in this same region of the cerebellum. Similar results are obtained in the light or in total darkness. These results suggest an anatomical and functional organization within the granule cells of the ventral uvula that may be a common neural substrate f…

Role of cerebellar nodulus and uvula on the vestibular quick phase spatial constancy.

We investigated the orientation of quick phases (QPs) of vestibularly-induced eye movements in rabbits in response to "off-vertical" sinusoidal vestibular stimulation. We also examined the possible role of the cerebellar nodulus and ventral uvula in controlling QP spatial orientation and modification. During "off-vertical" vestibular stimulation QPs remained aligned with the earth's horizontal plane, while the slow phases (SPs) were aligned with the plane of vestibular stimulation. This suggests that QPs are coded in gravito-inertial coordinates and SPs in head coordinates. When rabbits were o…

Stimulation of the nodulus and uvula discharges velocity storage in the vestibulo-ocular reflex.

The nodulus and sublobule d of the uvula of rhesus and cynomolgus monkeys were electrically stimulated with short trains of pulses to study changes in horizontal slow-phase eye velocity. Nodulus and uvula stimulation produced a rapid decline in horizontal slow phase velocity, one aspect of the spatial reorientation of the axis of eye rotation that occurs when the head is tilted with regard to gravity during per- and post-rotatory nystagmus and optokinetic after-nystagmus (OKAN). Nodulus and uvula stimulation also reproduced the reduction of the horizontal time constant of post-rotatory nystagm…

Autonomic and somatic responses evoked by stimulation of the cerebellar uvula in the conscious rabbit.

The present study has investigated the effects of electrical stimulation of the cerebellar posterior cortex in the conscious rabbit. Stimulation of lobule IX (the uvula) elicited an increase in mean arterial blood pressure and heart rate, accompanied by EEG desynchronization, pupillary dilatation and a specific motor reaction, consisting of pricking of the ears, neck stiffening and running movements. Stimulation of lobule VIII was ineffective in evoking equivalent responses. The administration of barbiturates reversed the cardiovascular response to uvula stimulation, producing a fall in mean a…

Ground-truth encoding of self-motion in the primate cerebellar nodulus and uvula.

Accurate internal estimates of self-motion and orientation relative to gravity are fundamental for stabilizing gaze, controlling posture, and navigating through dynamic environments. Prevailing theories propose that the cerebellar nodulus and uvula (NU) employ internal models to suppress sensory input arising from predictable, self-generated motion. However, this assumption has never been directly tested. Here, we recorded NU Purkinje cell activity in rhesus monkeys during active and passive head movements. We found neurons responsive to passive translations remained equally sensitive to self-…

Benign Symptomatic Squamous Papilloma of the Uvula: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Squamous papillomas are benign lesions that are associated with human papillomavirus infection. Oral squamous papilloma of the uvula is uncommon and rarely causes symptoms. In this case report, we present a rare case of symptomatic squamous papilloma of the uvula where the patient complained of mass-related symptoms such as dysphagia and choking sensation. The lesion was surgically excised using electrocautery with excellent outcomes. In addition, we reviewed literature related to the lesion.
