Implantable cardioverter defibrillatory implantation in a patient with persistent left superior vena cava and right superior vena cava atresia.

Persistence of a left superior vena cava has been observed in 0.3% of the general population as established by autopsy findings. In the adult population. it is an important anatomic finding if a left or right superior vena cava approach to the heart is considered for device implantation. We present a case with persistent left superior vena cava and right superior vena cava atresia in whom a dual chamber implantable cardioverter defibrillator was implanted and was technically challenging.

Coexistence of a left posteroseptal tract with persistent left superior vena cava. Ablation through an anomalous superior vena cava.

A case of a young male with WPW syndrome due to a left posteroseptal tract associated with a persistent left superior vena cava is described. After unsuccessful ablation attempts with a number of different approaches at conventional target sites, the accessory connection was successfully ablated within the coronary sinus. This was achieved only when the ablation catheter was introduced through the persistent left superior vena cava.

A large embolus trapped by an inferior vena cava filter: a case report supporting inferior vena cava filter insertion.

We describe a patient with a deep vein thrombosis causing multiple pulmonary emboli. After inferior vena cava filter insertion, a large embolus was trapped by the filter. Anticoagulation following filter insertion decreased the pulmonary artery pressure, and there was no recurrence of pulmonary embolization. Thus, in the presence of large, multiple thrombi in the proximal veins, inferior vena cava filter had better be inserted before thrombolytic treatment to prevent a lethal pulmonary embolism, and anticoagulant therapy is important after filter insertion.

[Unilateral left superior vena cava in absent right superior vena cava. Modern imaging diagnosis and clinical relevance].

Cardiological and radiological findings in a 64-year-old patient with persistent left superior vena cava and absent right-sided superior vena cava are described. Presence of a persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) is considered to be one of the most frequent anomalies of the systemic venous return. It occurs most often in association with a right-sided superior vena cava and only in rare cases with an absent or atretic right-sided superior vena cava. This malformation is often associated with other congenital heart defects, but without major hemodynamic significance. The variation may cau

[Two cases of atrial septal defect with absence of right superior vena cava and persistent left superior vena cava].

Two women (16-year-old, 54-year-old) of atrial septal defect with absence of right superior vena cava and persistent left superior vena cava were successfully operated on. Electrocardiographic findings show coronary sinus rhythm and atrial fibrillation. When we closed atrial septal defect cannulated to persistent left superior vena cava via the coronary sinus directly, sick sinus syndrome was not appeared postoperatively.

A case of absent right superior vena cava with persistent left superior vena cava: cross-sectional echocardiographic diagnosis.

We report a case of absence of the right superior vena cava. Hitherto, the findings in this condition have only been obtained using invasive methods; this report is the first in which the diagnosis was made by means of echocardiography. The findings include a markedly enlarged coronary sinus draining into the right atrium and a specific finding of contrast echocardiography in which contrast material injected into the right antecubital vein can be seen in the enlarged coronary sinus. The contrast echo flows into the right atrium from the coronary sinus only. The size of the coronary sinus was f

Unique Medley of Cardinal Veins: Duplicated Superior and Inferior Venae Cavae With Left Renal Agenesis and Hemiazygos Continuation of Left Inferior Vena Cava With Drainage Into Left Atrium.

Congenital anomalies of the superior and inferior vena cava result from abnormal embryogenesis of cardinal veins. Duplication of superior vena cava (SVC) occurs in 0.3% of the general population of which only 8% drain into the left atrium. The prevalence of double inferior vena cava (IVC) is around 0.2-3%. The reported incidence of unilateral renal agenesis ranges from 1:1100 to 1:5000, and the association of double IVC with renal agenesis has been reported in only 11 cases in the literature. The conglomeration of such rare anomalies incidentally noted in a single patient is reported in this s

Prenatal Diagnosis of an Isolated Persistent Left Superior Vena Cava With Absent Right Superior Vena Cava: A Case Report.

Persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) with absent right superior vena cava (RSVC) is a rare congenital venous anomaly resulting from the failure of the left anterior cardinal vein to regress. Although often asymptomatic in isolated cases, prenatal diagnosis has clinical benefits, including the exclusion of coexisting congenital heart disease (CHD) and awareness of possible complications during central venous access or pacemaker implantation. We report the case of a 34-year-old G2P1 woman who underwent a fetal echocardiography at 34 weeks of gestation. Examination of the four-chamber view

Inadvertent Left Superior Vena Cava Catheterization via the Axillary Vein in a Patient With Persistent Left Superior Vena Cava.

BACKGROUND: Persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) is a rare congenital vascular anomaly that can complicate central venous catheterization. While axillary vein cannulation is an increasingly recognized alternative to the subclavian or femoral route, inadvertent passage of a catheter into a PLSVC through the axillary vein has not been described in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old male with refractory status epilepticus required multiple intravenous infusions. Jugular and femoral access was contraindicated due to behavioral risks and local contamination, respectively, promp

Placing two inferior vena cava filters for the bail-out management of opening failure of an inferior vena cava filter.

A 93-year-old man with a femoral fracture was admitted to the emergency department. The patient presented with severe hypoxemia and shock. Enhanced computed tomography confirmed deep venous thrombosis in the left leg and pulmonary embolism. Subsequently, an inferior vena cava filter (IVCF) was implanted. Although the IVCF was completely unsheathed for deployment, it remained fully folded and did not open; it was not deployed or retrieved. A new IVCF was successfully placed in the same position. Acute treatment for the deep venous thrombosis and further pulmonary embolism was achieved.

Challenge Accepted: Lead Extraction in a Patient with Persistent Left Superior Vena Cava and Right Superior Vena Cava Occlusion.

Persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) is an anatomic variant that is relatively uncommon in the general population. Lead extraction through PLSVC is extremely rare. Due to unusual anatomy, the procedure carries challenges that require special considerations and careful planning. The authors report a case of lead extraction through a PLSVC with occluded right superior vena cava and highlight the challenges and outcomes of the procedure.

The gap between the aorta and the superior vena cava: A sonographic sign of persistent left superior vena cava and associated abnormalities.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the distance between the right superior vena cava (SVC) and the aorta in fetuses with bilateral superior vena cava as a possible sonographic marker for this. METHODS: This was a nested case-control study including 20 cases of bilateral SVC and 40 gestational age-matched controls. The distance between the right SVC and the aorta was measured at the level of the three-vessel trachea view in stored images, as well as the diameters of the aorta and the right SVC. RESULTS: The distance between the aorta and the right SVC was significantly larger in the cases of a left SVC co

Implantation of transvenous permanent pacemaker in a patient with persistent left superior vena cava and absent right superior vena cava.

Vascular access has remained a major challenge for implantation of permanent pacemaker leads. A persistent Left Superior Vena Cava (LSVC), especially with an absent Right Superior Vena Cava (RSVC), is a rare finding during pacemaker implantation and is accompanied by technical difficulties. Herein, we describe a case of sinoatrial node arrest, in which finding a suitable vein for passing the lead was challenging. The patient had a persistent LSVC with an absent RSVC.

Multidetector computed tomography detection of absent right superior vena cava and persistent left superior vena cava in an adult.

We report a rare case of the absence of the right superior vena cava and a persistent left superior vena cava in a 46-year-old man. This congenital venous anomaly was incidentally found on low-dose chest computed tomography and was clearly demonstrated by 3-dimensional volume-rendering image of multidetector computed tomography. Prior to computed tomography scanning, the scan range, optimal contrast enhancement, and reconstruction methods should be carefully planned to obtain the best diagnostic image of the venous anomalies using multidetector computed tomography.

Persistent left superior vena cava with absent right superior vena cava: morphological CT features and clinical implications.

Here we report a rare case of the persisting left superior vena cava with simultaneous absence of the right superior vena cava. This central venous variation has been identified during a routine chest CT scan as follow-up after colonic cancer in an asymptomatic patient with no previous history of heart diseases. Morphological features of this variation are illustrated on axial CT images and 3D image reconstructions. This anomaly occurs in 0.1% of the general population. In presence with the right superior vena cava it is the most common anatomical variation in the central venous system with a

Use of a jugular vein autograft for reconstruction of the cranial vena cava in a dog with invasive thymoma and cranial vena cava syndrome.

A spayed female dog was evaluated because of edema of the ventral cervical region, lethargy, cough, and reduced exercise tolerance. Invasive thymoma and cranial vena cava syndrome were diagnosed by use of ultrasound-guided fine-needle biopsy and contrast-enhanced helical computed tomography. Resection of the cranial vena cava and an autogenous jugular vein graft were used for restoration of normal venous return to the right atrium and alleviation of the cranial vena cava syndrome.
