The lymphatic vessels are a unidirectional, centripetal system that collects interstitial fluid from tissues and organs, directing it into the venous system. The lymphatic vessels can be categorized into four types: initial lymphatic vessels, precollectors, collectors, and lymphatic trunks. Initial lymphatic vessels comprise interconnected networks characterized by larger mash sizes compared to blood capillaries and are lined with a specialized endothelium. They have interendothelial openings that allow exchange with the surrounding tissue. These vessels also have characteristic markers such a

BACKGROUND: Experimental results suggest that the competence of the internal jugular vein (IJV) valve may be damaged when the IJV is cannulated for insertion of a central venous catheter. It has further been hypothesized that the risk of causing incompetence of the proximally located valve might be reduced by using a more distal site for venous cannulation. The present study evaluated these hypotheses in surgical patients.
METHODS: Ninety-one patients without preexisting incompetence of the IJV valve were randomly assigned to undergo distal or proximal IJV cannulation (> or = 1 cm above or be

Anticoagulants are used during pregnancy to prevent venous thrombo-embolism in highrisk patients, to prevent systemic embolism in patients with prosthetic heart valves or native valvular heart disease, and to treat patients with acute venous thrombo-embolism. Neither unfractionated nor low-molecular-weight heparin cross the placenta and both appear to be safe for the fetus. Oral anticoagulants do cross the placenta and they have been associated with the development of warfarin embryopathy, central nervous system anomalies, and fetal haemorrhage. The true incidence of these events is not known.

A case is presented in which the mitral and tricuspid valves were replaced by a ball-valve prosthesis. The patient was admitted as an emergency 18 months later with the clinical picture of acute venous inflow obstruction to the heart due to tricuspid ball-valve prosthesis obstruction. Successful replacement under emergency open heart surgery, using assisted circulation, is described.

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a common condition affecting the venous system, typically arising in the setting of increased venous pressure and impaired blood return secondary to weakened valves or damaged veins. Diabetes mellitus causes impaired circulation, neuropathy, impaired healing, and increased susceptibility to infection. Because diabetes and CVI are interconnected, ulcerations can progress to necrotizing fasciitis if not treated promptly and appropriately. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has further complicated patient care and is a potential risk for complic

We performed long-term closed-chest cardiopulmonary bypass in an animal model of total heart failure (induced ventricular fibrillation). The extracorporeal system included a venous reservoir, a roller pump, a membrane lung, and a blood pulsator system. We cannulated the right external jugular vein for venous drainage and the right subclavian artery for arterial return. To decompress the left heart we passed by percutaneous cannulation a special helical spring mounted on a Swan-Ganz catheter (Baxter Edwards Divisions, Irvine, Calif.) and positioned it to rest within the pulmonary artery and tri

In this two year retrospective analysis, we evaluated the epidemiology and risk factors for mortality of Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infection (SaBSI). Methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) was isolated in 84 (44.2%) and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in 106 episodes (55.8%). The mortality rate after 21 days was 16.4%. At univariate analysis older age, no removal of central venous catheter (CVC), prosthetic heart valves, severe sepsis, septic shock and high APACHE II score were significantly associated with mortality, whereas treatment duration > 48 hours, appropriate targeted

Antithrombotic treatment after heart valve surgery is of utmost importance depending on the type of used valve. Since in the early 1960s, oral anticoagulation with vitamin K antagonist are the gold-standard for prevention of thromboembolism at replaced heart valves. The introduction of new oral anticoagulation has dramatically changed treatment strategy in patients with atrial fibrillation and in patients with venous thromboembolism like deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. However, to date, the use of these newer drugs is contraindicated after implantation of mechanical heart valves f

BACKGROUND: Calcified right atrial thrombus is rare and commonly occurs secondary to atrial fibrillation and long-term central venous catheterization which present risk for embolization. Treatment typically involves anticoagulation and antiplatelet therapy but rarely surgical excision can be performed, especially in patients with venous obstruction or concomitant valvular dysfunction.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 69 year old symptomatic female with a history of atrial fibrillation and long-term venous catheterization found to have a large calcified right atrial thrombus causing

After introductory remarks about the flow phenomena in the human body (separation, dead waters, stagnation regions) and the model simularity conditions, the flow behaviour in arterial bifurcations at pulsatile flow are considered; they are accompanied by the formation of dead waters and secondary flows and therefore they give the danger of atherosclerosis. Then the flow pattern at arterio-venous anastomosis is interpreted with regard to the danger of thrombogenesis. At the selected example of ball prosthesis the flow pattern and the pressure loss of artificial heart valves (aortic as well as m

PURPOSE: In the modern era of robotic renal procedures and diagnostics, an even more detailed anatomical understanding than hitherto is necessary. Valves of the renal veins (RVV) have been underemphasized and have been disputed by some authors, and few textbooks describe them. The current anatomical study was performed to address such shortcomings in the literature.
METHODS: One hundred renal veins were studied in fifty adult formalin-fixed cadavers. Renal veins were removed from the abdomen after sectioning them flush with their entrance to the renal hilum. The inferior vena cava was then in

Electronic pressure testing of every LeVeen valve has practically eliminated mechanical malfunction as a cause of shunt failure. Nonetheless, failures do occur and in a series of 240 cases, early or late shunt failure occurred in 29 patients. Thirty-five additional cases of failures were either referred by other physicians over a period of 6 years or information and x-rays were accumulated by direct contact. Shunt failure becomes manifest by a sudden reaccumulation of ascites in patients with a previously functioning shunt. In immediate failure, the ascites may fail to disappear after surgery

In deep venous thrombotic and aplasia cases superficial veins become dilated. With the resulting incompetence of the valves, venous blood stream is not directed to the heart, but to the ankle as well. In these cases the superficial system does not support the venous drainage of the limb, but gives a further load. The question is if one can ameliorate the venous drainage with removal of insufficient varicose veins, or does it make the outcome worse? A new examination was developed to determine if collateral veins in the subfascial space are enough to drain the venous blood of the limb. A tensio

The acute stage of venous thrombosis is characterized by an inflammatory process, therefore the term phlebitis is often erroneously equated with venous thrombosis. In most cases, however, the inflammatory reaction or phlebitis is a secondary phenomenon, associated with the process of fibrinolysis and phlebitis as a primary cause is rare. Postthrombotic sequelae such as edema, varicose veins and ulcers usually are late complications and can take a long time to develop. The primary cause of the postthrombotic syndrome is related to an injured venous wall, including damaged valves or stenosis due

Twenty-nine patients with balanced forms of complete atrioventricular (AV) canal defects and tetralogy of Fallot in 12, double-outlet right ventricle (DORV) in 10, and additional anomalies associated with atrial isomerism in 7 underwent corrective repair. Age ranged from 39 days to 24 years (median, 3.7 years). Repair included reconstruction of the common AV valve in 25 patients and prosthetic valve replacement in 4. Construction of an intraventricular tunnel connecting the left ventricle with the aorta was accomplished in 23 of 25 patients with ventriculoarterial concordant or double-outlet c

From 1975 through 1986, 49 patients with asplenia (23 patients) or polysplenia (26 patients) syndromes underwent a modified Fontan operation. All patients had anomalous systemic venous return, and 43 (88%) had anomalous pulmonary venous return. The atrioventricular valve anatomy varied: 36 patients had a common atrial chamber and common atrioventricular valve, eight had mitral valve atresia, and five had severe mitral valve hypoplasia. Redirection of systemic venous return was accomplished by (1) atrial baffle (29 patients), (2) intraatrial conduit (19 patients), and (3) extraatrial conduit (o

BackgroundChronic venous disease (CVD) arises from venous obstruction, reflux, or both. Iliac vein stenting is standard for obstructive lesions, but the incremental benefit of concurrently treating deep venous reflux remains uncertain. We evaluated the efficacy of combining iliac vein stent placement with deep venous valve reconstruction in CVD patients presenting with both iliac obstruction and reflux.MethodsFrom October 2015 to May 2025, we retrospectively analyzed a prospectively maintained cohort of 74 patients with lower-limb CVD and iliac vein stenosis and stratified them by reflux patte

Percutaneous transvenous treatment has become the elective therapy for varicocele because it is a simple, safe, economic and reliable procedure. The presence of proximal anastomoses connecting a competent valved spermatic trunk with the renal vein can be responsible for a varicocele and make its treatment difficult. In such cases; the valve of the spermatic venous trunk can be bypassed using an open-ended guidewire with a removable mandril core, and then injecting the sclerosing agent through the guide. Moreover, the guidewire can facilitate the insertion of the catheter through the competent

The diagnosis of varicose veins is based on historical details pertaining to risk factors such as familial preponderance, advanced age, overweight, multiple births, professional activities carried out mainly in the standing or sitting position, use of oral contraceptives, diuretics or drugs which lower venous tone. Swelling of the legs on prolonged recumbancy, during pregnancy, fractures or cast treatment may be associated with thrombosis (Table 1). In addition to inspection and palpation in the standing and lying positions, the status of the pulses and the joints are of importance. The diagno
