Verbal characteristics of male and female transsexuals.

Slater's Selective Vocabulary Test was given to a group of 56 male and a group of 14 female transsexuals and the results were compared with those of 15-year-old boys and girls, and a group of normal male adults. It was found that whereas normal males and females have a ratio of gender appropriate words to cross gender words of approximately 2 to 1, in both male and female transsexuals that ratio is more like 1 to 1. The way in which this abnormal vocabulary acquisition may come about is briefly discussed. The factors related to this abnormal learning are not known.

Verbal memory following weight gain in adult patients with anorexia nervosa: A longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) show a moderate deficit in overall neuropsychological functioning. Since previous studies on memory performance mainly employed cross-sectional designs, the present study aims to investigate changes in verbal memory following weight-gain. METHODS: Verbal memory was assessed with the Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised (WMS-R; 'logical memory'-story-recall-subtest) and the California Verbal Learning Test-II (CVLT-II; 'verbal learning'). Included were 31 female patients with AN (18 restricting-, 13 purging-subtype; average disease duration: 5.1 years; a…

Metacognition in motor learning.

Research on judgments of verbal learning has demonstrated that participants' judgments are unreliable and often overconfident. The authors studied judgments of perceptual-motor learning. Participants learned 3 keystroke patterns on the number pad of a computer, each requiring that a different sequence of keys be struck in a different total movement time. Practice trials on each pattern were either blocked or randomly interleaved with trials on the other patterns, and each participant was asked, periodically, to predict his or her performance on a 24-hr test. Consistent with earlier findings, b…

Dynamic inferior olive activation in a cognitive task: an fMRI study.

The inferior olive provides powerful inputs to the cerebellum hypothesized to support cerebellar learning and error detection. Given cerebellar involvement in verbal working memory and the close interplay with the inferior olive, the inferior olive is likely also involved in verbal working memory. In order to elucidate the inferior olive's role in verbal working memory, we utilized an MRI-based Sternberg verbal working memory task which involved learning novel vs repeated sequences. As hypothesized, inferior olive activation was stronger during encoding and retrieval compared to maintenance, e

Patients with major depression show intact memory performance--given optimal conditions.

In the present study, verbal and visual memory functioning in a group of recurrent major depressive disorder patients were investigated. The study included 48 participants: 24 patients and 24 control subjects. Verbal and visual memory were investigated using the California Verbal Learning Test and the Rey Complex Figure Test. The results show that the depressed patients performed significantly worse compared with the controls on the very first trial in the verbal memory test. On all other conditions, the patients showed intact verbal memory, while visual memory was impaired. It is important to…

Learning and memory impairment in cocaine-dependent and comorbid schizophrenic patients.

Impairments in verbal learning and memory functioning have been found to be cardinal features among individuals with schizophrenia as well as among non-schizophrenic cocaine abusers. Cognitive deficits in these areas, moreover, have been associated with poor treatment response and short-term outcome. Little is known, however, about the acute effects of cocaine abuse on schizophrenic patients' learning and memory functioning. Consequently, a potentially reversible and treatable source of cognitive impairment has been virtually ignored. The present study examined the extent of verbal learning an…

Bitemporal hypoperfusion in transient global amnesia: 99m-Tc-HM-PAO SPECT and neuropsychological findings during and after an attack.

We report a patient who was evaluated neuropsychologically and with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) during and after an episode of transient global amnesia. During the attack, there was patchy retrograde amnesia and an inability to learn both verbal and non-verbal material. SPECT showed severe bitemporal hypoperfusion. Serial neuro-psychological testing documented a rapid recovery of recognition, but delayed recovery in reproduction of learned information. Recovery of spontaneous verbal and figural fluency was even further delayed. Follow up SPECT examination showed a recove

Lexical organization and phonological change in treatment.

Word frequency and neighborhood density are properties of lexical organization that differentially influence spoken-word recognition. This study examined whether these same properties also affect spoken-word production, particularly as related to children with functional phonological delays. The hypothesis was that differential generalization would be associated with a word's frequency and its neighborhood density when manipulated as input in phonological treatment. Using a multiple baseline across subjects design, 8 children (aged 3;10 to 5;4) were randomly enrolled in 1 of 4 experimental con

Sequence-specific procedural learning deficits in children with specific language impairment.

This study tested the procedural deficit hypothesis of specific language impairment (SLI) by comparing children's performance in two motor procedural learning tasks and an implicit verbal sequence learning task. Participants were 7- to 11-year-old children with SLI (n = 48), typically developing age-matched children (n = 20) and younger typically developing children matched for receptive grammar (n = 28). In a serial reaction time task, the children with SLI performed at the same level as the grammar-matched children, but poorer than age-matched controls in learning motor sequences. When teste

Multifocal hypometabolic correlates to deficits of verbal memory in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Neuropsychological research on mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) often highlights material-specific memory deficits, but a lesion-focused model may not accurately reflect the underlying networks that support episodic memory in these patients. Our study evaluated the pathophysiology behind verbal learning/memory deficits as revealed by hypometabolism quantified through 18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET). METHODS: This retrospective study included thirty presurgical patients with intractable unilateral MTLE who underwent interictal FDG-PET…

Working memory in learning disability subgroups.

The purpose of this study was to investigate (a) the degree to which working memory differences between learning-disabled and nondisabled children reflect a specific or generalized deficit, and (b) whether limitations in the enhancement of learning-disabled student's working memory performance are attributable to process or storage functions. To this end, performances of reading-disabled, math-disabled, chronological age (CA)-matched, and achievement-matched children were compared on verbal and visual-spatial working memory measures under initial, gain, and maintenance conditions. Network correlates of the cognitive response to levodopa in Parkinson disease.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive dysfunction is common in Parkinson disease (PD), even early in its clinical course. This disease manifestation has been associated with impaired verbal learning performance as well as abnormal expression of a specific PD-related cognitive spatial covariance pattern (PDCP). It is not known, however, how this metabolic network relates to the cognitive response to dopaminergic therapy on the individual patient level. METHODS: We assessed treatment-mediated changes in verbal learning and PDCP expression in 17 patients with PD without dementia who underwent cognitive testing a…
